I would like to add a stereo system to my 2008 170 Montauk.
The factory option system is OK but I would like tweak it a bit. Here is what I am thinking about:
Head unit: Clarion CMD 6 mounted in the console using factory bracket.
Remote: MW1 on console
Speakers: JL Audio 6.5" Mounted on the console in front of the pilot rather than factory location which is on the sides.
Sub: Poly Planer box subwoofer mounted in console, perhaps next to battery, secured to floor.
Antenna: I'm not sure. I have a console cover so would not want a huge antenna.
I'm looking for feedback on this proposed set up from fellow CW'ers. I did search the forum looking for ideas before posting.

Before I even finished reading I was going to suggest the speakers be put facing the RPS seat. at least then, under power, you'd be able to hear it. On my '08 170 in the factory installed speaker locations, that is sometimes difficult.
The setup sounds good, although I'm not sure you need a CMD6--what features does it add? You could probably save some money by finding a new CMD 5 on Ebay, and adding an amplifier mounted inside the console between the speakers. I plan on adding an amp and 2 additional speakers, and that is where I am going to mount it.

Re: CMD 6
I believe the main difference is the USB cable to connect an IPOD or thumb drive. Also, the CMD 6 uses the newer wired remote controls. Basically a couple of more bells and whistles.

CMD6: So far I don't see the improvement over the CMD5 - wait for the price to come down on CMD5's and grab one. Clarion has LOTS of these left.

What about an amplifier? Do you really need a sub woofer?

Update: the CMD6 has one thing the CMD5 does not - an ipod will work directly with just the ipod USB cord- no interface needed. Also, Sirius language written into the programming allows a portable XM/Sirius receiver to work with the CMD6 - no extra box needed.

What are you doing with the stock system? I would like to add a stereo to my project http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/017118.html . I am on a tight budget though. Let me know.

Are you sure you want to cut two more big holes in your console to put the speakers in front? I removed the speakers from my console and now I am having trouble finding a plate, hatch or anything that will cover the 5" diameter hole properly. Anyone have any suggestions?
