Dear Freinds:

I am purchasing a Garmin Data Card for my Garmin 276c. Can U use this card in my Garmin 178c which also takes the Garmin Data Card? The 276c is portable and I used it often on other boats where my 178c is not present.

Can I assume that the data on the card will be unaffected by where the card is inserted? I won't be saving any data to the cards.

Thank you

Gorji

Looking at the Garmin support website, It would apper that the Garmin data card is common to both units.

Bella con23: I know that already. I want to know if I can buy a data card for the eastern US and use it in either GPS I have depending on where I am.

In my opinion, Garmin has made this process unecessarily complicated. I realize they are protecting their assetts but for non pirates and legitimate buyers, there are sometimes too many hoops to jump thru.
Thank you.

Bella con23: I forgot to thank you for your reply.
I'd hope that the card may get modified once inserted into the GPS and become not useable in my other GPS.

Gorji - Not sure what your concern with the data card is.

The card is a read only memory data card and can be swapped from unit to unit without any change to the card itself.

Garmin makes you register your software maps. I don't know if the cards work the same as the maps you get from the mapsource cd, but with the cd you are only allowed (and able) to install the charts on two units. The installation software forces you to enter your unlock code for each unit. You can easily transfer the charts to as many SD cards as you like but they don't work if they are not in a registered unit. Again, the procedure may differ when you purchase the pre-programmed cards.

Call Garmin support and have them give you a unlock code for the second unit. You can add it manually into the Mapsource program or update it from the Garmin website. Tech support should add it to your already unlocked list. The really made it complicated but I have three units unlocked for various maps so I know it can be done.
