Smartcraft Error Message CHECK ENGINE

When I started my [2007 year of production] Mercury Verado 150 this afternoon I heard four beeps and my Smartcraft read "CHECK ENGINE" but did not provide a more specific warning. Read the manuals tonight but no reference to this warning. The beeping stopped, only to return when I restarted my engine two hours later after some unsuccessful striper fishing in Great Bay, New Hampshire. What I find odd is that for other warning indications (CHECK PITOT and, my favorite, WATER IN FUEL), I have received a more specific indication of what the problem is. In this instance, however, I only got a CHECK ENGINE on the screen. Of course this happens right before my upcoming vacation. If anyone has any ideas I would be appreciative. Perhaps I should simply call my local authorized Verado servicer. Thank you in advance.

I think Mercury's have the uncanny ability to be able to time not running correctly to vacation.

Look in your owner's manual and follow the procedure given when the CHECK ENGINE message occurs.
I suppose that is not a very helpful suggestion. I wonder if there is a procedure given for CHECK ENGINE. What is one supposed to check?

Turned out to be the float switch -- no boat for the week.
