The sounder on my Garmin GPS Map 498 has been performing erratically. Frequently it loses the depth reading and the depth reading starts flashing. the transducer adjustment has not changed. Has anyone else had this problem? I have a Montauk 17.

I noticed that Garmin has a download for the GPSMAP 498. Might this download fix the type of problem my 498 has? A friend of mine has the same model unit on his Montauk and it does the same thing.

Thanks for any feedback.

I had the same problem and found the transducer had just changed its angle by 1 notch of adjustment.

I have a 498 and have not had that problem. Only time I have trouble reading depth is when the transducer has kicked up.

I am quite sure your issue is that the transducer has been inadvertantly mis-aligned. It's true that a one "click" difference can change the unit's submersion enough to disturb the reading. I have the Garmin 540s and the same thing happend to me. I readjusted the transducer position and the problem disappeared.
