Yamaha has announced a new generation of Command Link controls for their outboard motors, the Command Link Plus. The display is a color LCD with five-inch screen. It can be configured by the user to show a variety of engine parameters. Command Link Plus includes a NMEA-2000 gateway that permits engine parameters to be displayed on other NMEA 2000-compatible devices, such as multi-function displays. Yamaha has also included an electronic anti-theft system. A special electronic key fob is needed to start the engines. |

The new Yamaha theft prevention system is called YCOP--Yamaha Customer Outboard Protection security system. The system is similar to security systems used in modern automobiles, where a radio transmitter key fob replaces the traditional mechanical ignition key. The YCOP system consists of two components: a small key fob transmitter (the "Remote Immobilizer"), and a receiver module. The receiver module is installed on the boat and connected to the Yamaha vessel network. It listens for signals from the key fob transmitter. When a signal to disable starting is received, the receiver module sends a command to the Yamaha engine (which is also connected to the vessel network), and starting is disabled. Even if the engine were hot-wired for starting, the engine speed is limited to 2,500-RPM, making a quick escape by the thief more difficult.
