posted 02-07-2010 08:53 AM ET (US) Our new Boston Whaler has a Verado motor with Mercury Smartcraft gauges. We receive plenty of information, however, we do not get a water depth reading because there is no transducer. Is the the Mercury Smartcraft depth sounder effective? I would prefer simply using the guages that are already installed and not cut into the center console.

I had a Smartcraft equipped Sea Ray that came with a thru-hull sounder. It worked very well, depth showed on the digital read-out and could be set as the default reading. I have no experience with this function on an outboard boat, nor have I seen one equipped this way. Recently, I installed a Raymarine A50 sounder/GPS unit. I am very pleased with the unit.

Glen E is "the man" when it comes to anything Verado related, take his advise on the subject. You may want to get in touch with him directly for some help with your question. He has a website dedicated to Verado motor owners, you may also want to post your question there.
