The time is approaching to get the boat out of cold storage. I want to add new electronics and would appreciate any update on Lowrance HDS units. I was planning on buying the HDS10 with 83-kHz and 200-kHz transducer for the dash of my OUTRAGE 18, but there was a lot of discussion here last summer and fall about problems and poor support from Lowrance. Checking for reviews on google but for the most part not as reliable as this site. I fish the Great Lakes so can't get any updates from my local sources. Any suggestions from warm weather friends on alternate units or results of recent updates would be welcomed. thanks

The JIHAD AGAINST LOWRANCE seems to have ended. My theory about the number of complaints was based on a simple premise: the devices became more sophisticated and complicated than before, and the users became more unsophisticated and simplistic than before. The result was a large increase in the volume of calls for support. In any case, Lowrance support seems to have improved its time-on-hold for free calls for free support, so the JIHAD has been called off.
I wish I had some real hands-on experience to share with you about the HDS-10. It looks like a great product. I'd like to have one on the dash of my Boston Whaler on the Great Lakes, too. I don't fish, but the impressive SONAR performance would be nice to look at.

I have just had a pleasant experience with Lowrance, for $200 they replaced a 520C unit that had been inadvertantly sunk in salt water for about 8 hours. The units are not supposed to be water proof. They are OK in my book.

I just checked the Lowrance website and there is a software update, as of 02/01/2010, for all HDS units. From the changes list this is a needed update. Steve, I hope you have a high speed connection, the download is 338 MB.

Thanks, I’ll download it ASAP, it takes ages from here :(
Here's a mock up of my new layout:
I could not get Aluminium so went with 4mm clear acrylic sheet and have cut out the 3 main slots already , borrowed the drill for the 2" Dials and added cut outs for one switch on each side now.
Hopefully I will get the dash coated with sign shop black vinyl tomorrow.

Well the black vinyl turned out to be hard work after 3 attempts I decided to wait till tomorrow for two reasons
Firstly I have now found out that acrylic sheet should be left at least a day after removing the protective coating due to trapped air on the surface causes bubbles.
Secondly as I bought the sheet I have no backing paper (which may help) but more important is the vinyl can be applied wet by coating both the acrylic sheet and the vinyl with a weak soapy solution, which should help chasing out the air bubbles and the vinyl can be lifted and reapplied without stretching.
If this fails I may have to get a professional to apply it

Nice picture Steve and glad to hear you are getting along with your project, just not sure how it is related to my quest for alternate chartplotter/fishfinder to purchase that might be a better alternative to spending money on the Lowrance HDS 10. Any fishermen out there that have some real suggestions your comments would be appreciated. thanks Gyzmo

My apologies for hijacking your thread :)
At the level/cost of the HDS10 you have removed most of the cheaper alternatives really leaving you with just a few options which come in to the realm of personal preference over cost IMO.
The Lowrence units offer excellent value and there is little technical difference between units at this level or any substantiated evidence that warranty and support is remarkably different between any make according to recent posts.
PS the vinyl went well with a liberal use of soapy water
