Just installed the Garmin GPSMap545s on my Outrage 18. This is a chart-plotter and depth finder with 5" diagonal 640 x 480 VGA color display . My first impression is that the display is more susceptible to impaired visibility due to glare than the old black and white Garmin GPSMap 185 Sounder it replaced. Circumstances under way didn't permit me to play with back-light adjustment or experiment with shading. Is this just a matter of adjusting back-light? Would appreciate feedback from anyone who has any experience with this device -- and in particular with the visibility of the display under harsh sunlight. Are there any after-market products that address this?

Thanks

I have the same unit but can't make a comparison to any other as this is the only color chartplotter I have owned.

When I first got the unit I kept the thin film protector on the screen to better protect it and I was very dissatisfied with the visibility. When I took the throwaway protector off there was a very significant improvement in the visibility.

Under some very very bright conditions I have a little trouble seeing some of the detail but by simply adjusting the angle of the unit or with change in direction of the boat I find the visibility quite acceptable. Adjusting the backlight also helps but I seldom have to fool with that.

I think it would be virtually impossible to eliminate all the reflection off of the screen. Overall I'm very satisfied with the visibility.
