Can a external antenna be added to a GARMIN 498C with internal antenna? I have one but I'm not sure if their is a plug in the back or not. It iss on the boat. I can't really tell from the manual. It has been very slow to acquire satellites, taking 15 minutes this season. The Auto Locate function seems to work fine. Once acquired, if I shut it down and restart it still takes another 15 minutes for it to find satellites.

Something is clearly wrong. From a cold start a modern GPS receiver should obtain a fix in about one minute if the receiver has a clear view of the sky. What indication of received signal strength is given by the GARMIN 498C?

Dauntless 180 ......

I answered all you questions in the post you made on the THT. As to the unit aquiring a fix there is an update to your unit listed on the Garmin website that fixes the issue.

Here's the update ..... Garmin498WAAS.jpg?t=1275914498

Here's the list of all the updates for your unit.

Thanks Tom, I'll be calling Garmin today.

Jim on the Sat Screen the unit "sees" the sats but its very slowing locking in on them. The green bars go up and down in strength. After a while it finally locks in of a few and everything is a go. Its just weird that it started happening this season. Up until this year it would acquirer the sats in about 15 seconds from a cold start. Their is nothing above the unit blocking the sky. Hopefully the software update will fix the problem.

There was some adjustments aroto the WAAS birds last week. PRN 48 and 51 were moved. This caused some acquisition anomalies in some units across the marine electroincs spectrum.

That might just be the issue.

Thanks again
