I have a 2005 Johnson 40-HP two-cycle with an 8-pin connector. I just hooked up a System Check Tachometer 0177107 and it goes in reverse. The short instruction sheet is worthless and has no trouble-shooting help. Can anyone help?

The literature included with the System Check tachometer is most likely just an illustrated procedure explaining how to install it. I would not expect that the literature accompanying the device would provide comprehensive information on diagnostic and repair procedures in the event of a malfunction. If you need help with diagnostic and repair procedures for a Johnson or Evinrude engine, the factory service manuals provide excellent information. It is my impression that the literature produced by OMC and then later by Bombardier that accompanies their products is of the highest quality. I find it to be well written and carefully illustrated. I am not at all inclined to change my opinion of the literature of OMC or Bombardier based on your experience with this particular installation.
Please give more information about the behavior of the tachometer. I am not clear what you mean by your description that the tachometer "goes in reverse." If you can give a clearer description of the problem, you may be able to elicit help in resolving it.
Often tachometer problems in two-cycle engines are indicators that there is something awry in the engine's battery charging circuitry and voltage regulator. Check the rectifier and regulator assembly for proper operation.
