I purchased a 1989 Outrage 20' a month ago. Since then I have been doing some cleaning and fixing getting the boat ready to live on Lake Norman. It appears the boat is set up for a Raymarine A60/A65 GPS system. The boat has a Airmar P58 transducer, Raymarine RS12 GPS sensor, and a DSM25 sounder. All I need is the display. I have read Jim's review of the A60 from 2008, and believe this unit will be adequate for my needs. I have found several displays on Craigslist for around $300. Is this a good route for me? Is it better to scrap the old parts for a newer system? http://s957.photobucket.com/albums/ae52/AllyConstruction/ Raymarine%20GPS/?action=view¤t=IMG_2664.jpg |

The first thing is establishing what's left of the system is still functioning and for how long would also be a concern Don't forget you will also need a chart to go with your new head unit. Older or even secondhand units can offer excellent value Alternatively there is also some bargains to be had on new systems now it,s nearer the end of your season My preference would be a new Lowrance HDS-5 with built in maps bought on a special or rebate deal or Garmin/Raymarine if you prefer You do not note if you are a keen fisherman or if you have a NMEA2000 compatible engine as potential expansion of your system later could be a factor Regards |

Thanks Steve, Abu Dhabi? My engine is a 1997 Evinrude 200 Ocean Pro. I dont know if it is NEMA2000 compatible. Is there a special connector I should look for? I spoke with a guy in Ca. last night that has a A60 display for $375. That price is a little more than I want to spend on an untested system. Any thoughts on price you would put into it? Here are some pictures of the unit for sale: |

Jake Yes AD just go east over the pond and another 3.5k :) No your engine is not compatible :( I think buying secondhand may be compounding your problems unless the buyer will let you fit it and see if your existing parts and the head unit are working I would Email jimh to see what he did/got for his old system as he has upgraded to Lowrance HDS-8 If your budget can't stretch to Lowrance HDS-5 the elite 5x offers excellent value also if you look at companies like WMJ marine apart from specials often refurbish units are available Units often bundled with base US maps are good value you really need to look in to these first than just opting for a possible simple solution of making good what was there it could be a false economy In the long term FYI I sold my old Navman 5500 with local map and VHF for 200USD Regards |

The A60 I reviewed was on loan, so I do not have one to offer for sale. The RS12 GPS sensor is no longer WAAS enabled due to changes in the PRN being used for the signals-in-space sources, but it should still provide good non-precision-enhanced fixes. The Airmar transducer and the DSM25 sonar should still be useful. The suggestion to test drive your existing devices by borrowing a good A60 head unit is a good one. I'd proceed along that path. Perhaps then you can find a bargain on a replacement. Another option is to sell off the Raymarine accessories, which should still have value for others who are seeking spares or replacements. Use the cash from that to buy a new unit of the brand of your choice. |

Thanks Steve and Jim. New saddle on a dead horse, my thoughts exactly. I purchased a Garmin 140 Fish finder at Target last week for $50, so I guess that will do for now. I will keep the current GPS sensor and transducer hooked up for a little longer and keep a look out for a cheap used A60 (Will post in Marketplace later). I own a construction company and my wife is an Architect. Abu Dhabi is amazing! My father in law just got back from there and the pictures of the skyscrapers are surreal. Thanks again for the advice, now back to wax on Collinite, wax off... |

Jake He must be talking about this leaning one just up the road from me Looks nice in the pictures but that sweeping outer mesh is now completely covered in sand/dust. You can wash your car 5 times a day here and it will still be sandy 5 mins later They hold the boat show oposite in the marina Regards |
