NOAA has released a large number of electronic versions of charts and maps dating from the Civil War era and made them available for free download from their website at

For example, here is a portion of the St. Mary's River (flows between Lake Superior and Lake Huron) at East Neebish Rapids as charted in 1853: zoomifyURLDrivenWebPage.htm?zoomifyImagePath=00_A-00-1853

That is way cool. Pretty impressive quality for that time. I wonder what the currents were like through there.
