SIMRAD have announced their new black-box SONAR module accessory model BSM-2 which they describe as the first recreational SONAR to incorporate chirped SONAR techniques. SIMRAD says the BSM-2 outperforms monotonic 3-kW sounders. SIMRAD says the BSM-2 will operate effectively in water with depths to 10,000-feet. (It will be difficult for most recreational boaters to verify this.)

Simrad’s BSM-2 will be available in the first quarter of 2011.

Chirped SONARs emit a frequency modulated continuous wave signal. Digital signal processing techniques are used to demodulate the return echoes. The added frequency component permits significant advantage in signal-to-noise ratio to be obtained. For more on chirped SONAR techniques see

For a rigorous mathematical analysis of the swept frequency or chirp technique of echo locating, see

Further explanation of the demodulation technique for swept or chirped echo-locators is given in

It is anticipated the SIMRAD BSM-2 will be priced about $2,500. To exploit the maximum performance from the device will require use of rather expensive wide-band transducers made by AIRMAR, whose cost will also be significantly more than the typical transom-mount SONAR transducer used on small boats. A transducer cost in the $1,000 to $1,500 range may be typical.

One will also need a corresponding display device, which in the SIMRAD line will mean an NSE model, the least-expensive of which are about $2,500. Thus a working SIMARD chirped SONAR built around the BSM-2 will cost about $6,000.

An echo sounder that costs $6,000 is probably beyond the typical price range for most small boat owners, and the appeal of the BSM-2 will probably be with professional sport fishing boats.
