I have cigar-lighter power cable adapter for my HDS-5. I purchased it so I could use the GPS fuction on any boat. Now I'm thinking of using an AC to DC adpater with it for in house use. The AC adapter I have is a [110-Volt AC] to 15-Volt DC 35-Watt Output from an old lap top computer. I can add a cigar plug to the output. The HDS 5 power specifications read as follows:

Supply voltage 10 to 18 volts.
0.7A at 13V with backlight on, 0.4A with backlight off.

Looking at the specification, it looks like I'll be okay. I don't want to blow up my new unit. Has anyone done something like this? Just want to be on the safe side.--Stan

You probably want to add a cigar lighter socket to the power supply. Finding a good cigar lighter socket for cable end mounting is a challenge itself. Then you can connect your cigar lighter plug adaptor cable from the HDS-5 to it. From the information you have given the voltage and current available from the surplus computer power brick are in the range specified for the HDS-5.

I recommend you measure the actual voltage provided by the surplus computer power brick before connecting your new and expensive HDS-5 to it. The actual voltage provided may not be precisely in conformance with the voltage shown on the product's label.

Jim, good idea on measuring the output. The first power converter I looked at,(110 to 15V DC) measured 20V out. The converter used for the PC, measured 15V as specified.
