The International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades, also known as iCast, held its 2011 exhibition in Las Vegas on July 13 through July 15. The trade show awards recognition of the "Best In Show" to new products and devices exhibited there. In the category "Electronics" the 2011 iCast new product showcase winner was LOWRANCE-NAVICO. LOWRANCE was recognized for their ELITE-5 DSI echosounder, GPS receiver, and chart plotter combined instrument with a 5-inch color display. For more information see http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine/Mark-Elite-Series/Elite-5-DSI/ One significant feature of the ELITE-5 DSI device is the very high-frequency SONAR it employs. The ELITE-5 DSI uses 455-kHz and 800-kHz frequencies to produce a very high-resolution two-dimentional rasterized image of SONAR targets. This high-frequency technique appears to be called down scan imaging or DSI for short. DSI is distinct from side-scan imaging or SSI. The ELITE-5 DSI sells for around $650 with included transducer and digital chart cartography. |

Also, please note that the ELITE-5 DSI is a different product than the ELITE-5. The principal difference appears to be in the frequency of the SONAR signals used. The DSI model uses much higher frequency SONAR. Accordingly, the SONAR transducer is also completely different than the conventional lower-frequency transducers we are accustomed to using. |
