I have just installed an E-TEC 130 and was informed by the mechanic that there is a [connector] on the top starboard side of the engine that will allow connecting the engine directly to my Lowrance HDS. Has anyone done this hookup? If so, can you tell me the part number of this wiring harness? Engine was only installed yesterday so haven't had any time to really explore if any info is being transmitted to the HDS unit or what performance numbers are but during the short test run I did find out it sure is quiet compared to the Evinrude it replaced.

You do not hook your motor to the HDS. The motor hooks to the boat network and the HDS hooks to the network, then they can communicate. Your dealer should have educated you, given you literature, or showed you the info on the Evinrude website about I-Command.

Try the REFERENCE section here for articles on I-Command. You also must take advantage of the SEARCH system here on this site to come up with links like this one.

Thanks Seahorse. I have read Jim's article a couple times and little by little the parts of the puzzle are coming together. The mechanic pointed the connection on the engine out to me as we were going through the instal but did not go into any detail. I now have the main components on my outrage that I want now just have to learn how to connect them or may have to find someone with the knowledge to do the work.

There is really nothing to this project. All the wiring components are pre-made and easily connect together. Very little fuss and bother. You connect the two devices, the E-TEC and the HDS-8, to the boat's NMEA-2000 network backbone. Very simple. The details are all in my long article, linked above.

There is nothing to configure on the E-TEC. Zero. Nada.

The HDS-8 typically self-configures and will recognize the E-TEC without any user intervention. The HDS-8 comes with three pages of engine data display pre-configured. Not much to do there, either. You can customize the display presentation. Read the HDS-8 manual. It will give advice on how to customize the engine data display pages.
