Location Morehead City NC. Actual underway displays [of AIS targets received by a Standard Horizon GX2100 receiver and plotted on the display of a Garmin 740].

Very cool! What [does] the acronym AIS stand for? I am low-tech when it comes to navigation technology.--Pete

AIS is an acronym for automated identification system. A good way to resolve the meaning of acronyms is to use ACRONYMFINDER.COM

AIS has been mentioned repeatedly in prior discussions here in SMALL BOAT ELECTRICAL--it is one of our favorite topics. Read some of the 100 prior articles.

Tom--Thanks for showing us your chart plotter presentation of AIS targets in conjunction with the actual view from your boat. I plan to add an AIS receiver to my electronic goodies.

There is a good article on WIKIPEDIA about the automatic identification system or AIS:

WIKIPEDIA is a good source of information on many general topics.
