After installing the X-4 early this week I was able to snag a compadre to go out with me today for a test run.

This unit is at the bottom of Lowrance's offerings and is monochrome. I bought it at my local BassPro Shop for around $80 for use on the new to us 13 Sport.

Installation was easy and I just followed the instructions. If your battery is mounted aft and the X-4 is mounted on the console the power cable will not be long enough. A couple of Ancor heat shrink splices and some on-hand cable took care of that. I routed the transducer cable into the cockpit via the engine well drain to avoid another hole in the transom. It came with a nice fuse and holder and the transducer mounting screws. Three wood screws, not included, were required to mount the unit to the console.

Performance was excellent although no fish were detected. A few adjustments were necessary but the manual is simple and straight forward. The transducer was mounted per the manual and it held the bottom at all speeds up to WOT.

A benefit of the unit is that it can be removed from the mount by a simple squeeze of the mount and disconnecting the single power/transducer cable.

I believe this unit is a good value for most angles fishing in under 100 feet of water. It may do well in deeper water but I'll probably never know.

Is this unit a one-color, that is black or white, display? Or is it a grayscale display with many shades of gray? What is the display pixel count?

Jim,

It has many shades of gray. I'll get the manual and provide the pixel count this evening.

Jim,

The following pertains to the X-4:

Display- High-contrast Film Super Twist LCD, 3.5 inch diagonal viewing area.

Resolution- 240 pixels (vert) x 160 pixels (horz), 38,400 total pixels.

Current Drain- 170 ma backlight off; 240 ma light on.

Frequency- 200kHz.

Transducer- Skimmer, 20 degree cone angle, operates at up to 70 mph.

Transmitter- 800 watts peak-to-peak power; 100 watts RMS power (typical).

Depth capability- 600 feet.

Note: The display on my X-4 includes digital readouts of depth, water temperature, and battery voltage. While underway the voltage indication was 14.5 volts. With the engine shut off the indication was 12.7 volts.

I believe complete specifications and an owner's manual are available at Lowrance.com.
