Received my Garmin 5 pin NMEA-2000 cable and NMEA-2000 T-Connector today. I connected it to my NSS 8 Simnet Port and then into my existing Garmin NMEA-2000 backbone. Turned on [power to] the NMEA-2000 backbone and fired up my NSS 8 and Garmin 740; both units recognized each other and started passing data back and forth. Didn't have to change one setting on either unit. Simrad and Garmin make fine NMEA-2000 partners.

Here's what I saw on the NSS 8 and 740 device diplays.

I put the NSS 8 in the simulation mode so I could check and see if temperature and depth information was making through the NMEA-2000 backbone to the 740. No problem, whatsoever.

Simrad sonar display

Note the temperature and depth information. Garmin can display four-digit temps and the NSS 8 passes it over.

Note: The depth numbers are off two-tenths because I was late taking the screenshot on the Garmin the NNS 8 had moved on down the road to deeper water.

740 display

I was able to pass waypoints back and forth between the NSS 8 and 740 without any issue.

I'm putting together a video of both units will take me about 3 - 4 more days to shoot it, render, and upload it. Thanks for being patient.

The Simrad NSS series are very nice indeed. They're intuitive with good solid functionalities and easy to understand displays. Navigating the onscreen menus is a easy once you understand the flow and concepts. As always there are some menus that aren't covered in the OM but once located are easy to navigate. I really like the AP menus and functions.

The SIMRAD SONAR screen shot looks nice. You couldn't do that with your old Furuno sounder, eh? (I.e., capture the screen as a digital image and export it from the device.)
