The Lowrance HDS devices permit the user to manipulate some of the files stored on the device. In the PAGES presentation there is an (unnamed) selection (which Lowrance refers to as) UTILITIES. In the UTILITIES options there is a selection for FILES.

The FILES page provides a method for the user to copy files from the internal memory of the HDS to a memory card, or to delete files. Only certain files are available on the internal memory to be copied or deleted. Typically the files are either log files or screen shots.

Important Safety Note

On HDS devices with two memory card slots, it is typical that one memory slot will be used for a memory card containing (very expensive) digital cartography information (or a "chart card"). I recommend inserting the chart card into the memory card-2 slot, and to use the memory card-1 slot for a scratch disk memory card as the destination for copying files. The reason: if a memory card is inserted in slot-1, it becomes the default destination during the copy procedure. If the chart card is in the memory card-1 slot, you could accidentally write a file onto the chart card. It is highly recommended to not perform any write operations on a chart card. These cards may stop working if you write random files onto them. The chart cards often have rather odd file structures, and they may not tolerate having a new file written onto them. Since a blank memory card costs only a few dollars, purchase a few blank memory cards and use them to store files you wish to copy from your HDS.

Files on a memory storage card can also be imported into the HDS. For example, a file containing waypoints, routes, or trails can be imported into the HDS using the IMPORT function. You can also copy screenshots from a memory card to the HDS. You can also copy SONAR log files. The HDS is quite versatile in handling files.
