Got my ICOM M92D handheld VHF Marine Band radio today; they were released last Friday after FCC approval. It floats AND flashes, is DSC capable, has a internal GPS, noise cancelling circuits, 5-watt outPUT, waypoint navigation AND management, IPX7 waterproofing, a man overboard entry key and navigation, and new softkey functions. The ICOM M92D is a little smaller than the Standard-Horizon HX 851. I haven't had the ICOM M92D on the water but will this weekend so I'll give you some first impressions, after the fact. Out of the box setup was simple: MMSI entry, UTC time adjustment, setting up DSC Groups, etc. Here's a short video and some pictures. jpg?t=1337726021 jpg?t=1337726044 jpg?t=1337726037 jpg?t=1337726126

SeaTow automated radio check using the ICOM M92D. Nasty day on the water yesterday.

Tom--Everything points to a winning multifunction hand held VHF radio. The integral GPS and DSC capability makes the little radio an almost "must have" for coastal and inshore boaters. I am always within range of a Coast Guard antenna so for distress calls the handheld radio could replace the in-dash vhf radio and make the interconnection problems a thing of the past.
