Perhaps due to a system crash and reboot, my Lowrance HDS-8 is now showing the electronic charts with an odd symbol that I can only describe as a small purple (or violet) rooster icon over certain land areas. I vaguely recall reading a mention of this icon before, but I'll be darned if I can find anything on-line about it. What is the purple rooster icon? And, how do I get rid of it?

I believe that symbol denotes "National Park". You should find that the symbol appears on all of the Apostle Islands except for Madeline Island which is not a part of the National Park.

I have seen these purple roosters but not on my HDS, it was on the NAVONICS PC computer program I had installed. I have since removed that program and cannot verify this information.

Are you seeing the roosters using the built in HDS map or on a supplemental Navonics chart that is on a SD card?

My roosters covered all of the Gulf of Mexico, I don't remember any of them being on land, but they might have been since I was mostly interested in the wet areas.

Jim, please correct my spelling, NAVIONICS.

I see the birds on my Navionics PC app and my Navionics Ipad app. The Navionics website does not provide an explanation for the meaning of the symbol. The only information to be found on the Navionics website regarding chart symbols is the following statement: "Navionics charts are based on official Hydrographic Services' charts. Symbols used in these charts are usually explained in the relevant Hydrographic Services websites."

The version of U.S. Chart No. 1 that is available online does not show the bird symbol as a symbol for National Parks. It does show a similar symbol which is used to denote bird sanctuaries.

Reviewing my Navionics charts, the bird symbol is used for both U.S. and Canadian national parks, many of which are not bird sanctuaries.

I believe the Insight charts included with many Lowrance and Simrad chartplotters are based in part on data provided by Navionics. On my Simrad NSS8, when I zoom in on the chart, at a certain point it will change from the Insight view to a view which looks very similar to the Navionics Gold chart view. I will check my chartplotter later today to see if the birds show up when in the Insight view.

I am boating in an area where many of the 21 islands are United States of America National Parks. Kevin's theory is a good fit with my present observations!

On my Navionics Gold Card, the little bird symbol denotes a National Park, National Seashore, or National Wildlife Refuge. It might be used for a few other Federal areas like National Monument, but I'm not sure of that.
