One of my favorite websites is marinetraffic.com. This site takes AIS vessel information and projects it on to a world map. You can click on the vessel symbol and see what ship you are looking at in the distance. I just found a new iPhone app that allows you to register with marine traffic.com and your iPhone will display your vessel on the marinetraffic.com website. I tried it out today on an 80-mile run from Waukegan to Chicago and back and it worked very well. I need to figure out how to add photos of my boat. No surprise my vessel name is whaler dude on marinetraffic.com

What is the name of the application for the iPhone that is being mentioned?

I don't think the iPhone operates as an AIS transponder. I think the iPhone application sends the location of the iPhone--presumed to be aboard a boat and deduced from the GPS receiver in newer iPhones of perhaps from the cellular network geo-locationi data in older iPhones--to the marinetraffic.com server, which then treats the position data as if it were being sent by an AIS transponder.

What happens when you carry your iPhone in your car? Does marinetraffic.com continue to plot its position?

App users are required to only use while on the water.. You are correct it is not an actual AIS transponder.
