posted 09-25-2012 08:54 AM ET (US)         To find recent news stories about the automatic identification system I used a GOOGLE NEWS search on the string "AIS". My results were not as expected. I discovered that the acronym AIS is now in use to mean aquatic invasive species. There seems to be quite a bit of law enforcement work being done in the State of Minnesota in that regard. I think AIS in Minnesota is now understood to mean aquatic invasive species and not automatic identification system as far as it applies to boating. I presume that "AIS enforcement" means checking trailer boat ramps to see if boaters are in compliance with new laws about removal of any water onboard the trailer boat. This newspaper article mentioned AIS eleven times: http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/244369/group/Sports/ I will have to craft better search terms to find information about AIS, the automatic identification system.
