There is some really great boating here that would make for a great way to meet other whaler nuts. Anyone?

I'd be interested in trailering up to the bay from Santa Cruz. I'd love to join a WhalerRendezvous but I need advice on launch sites etc. What about an overnight at Angel Island? Another idea: McCovey Cove Whalerfest for a Giants game........wheels are spinning now!

Hmmmm... We might be able to come up with something. I sent out an email earlier today. Tom said he would attend. I'll volunteer to organize, though that means in my time frame ... and I'm thinking about after the first of the year? I've talked to another fellow from San Jose, his name is in the July 2000 issue of the Classic Whaler newsletter, and he is interested. Hoop, San Jose

I would definitely participate. If a lot of folks are from the SJ area, Monterey Bay is another option. I think Chuck Tribolet is also from San Jose, perhaps he would join us as well.

I'm from Morgan Hill (south of San Jose),
but I'd participate.

Sounds like we have some interest. Thanks to those of you who responded to my email. At the moment, I'ld say that something in the May timeframe is what we are shooting at.

Options:
- One day, or an overnight, or a weekend
- Location: should be scenic; an outing that most everybody could participate in? Lake or ocean? Monterey? SF Bay? Delta? Tahoe?
- Activity: social only? Some education?
- "Boat show?" with some classics to look at and dream over?

Any way we go, I know that this is going to be a lot of fun! Hoop, San Jose

I don't think Monterey is a good idea --
in May it's too rough for me (and I have
a cast iron stomach) one day in three.
And there's not much to do except dive or
fish.

Tahoe is a long haul. I think SF Bay,
or Delta (Lost Isle? ;-)

On second thought, Chuck is right about Monterey Bay; There are not a lot of good places to anchor up and socialize. Another idea I'll throw out there: Tomales Bay in Marin County. My wife and I spent the Labor Day weekend kayak camping there and it was uncrowded, scenic, and comforatable. An added bonus was that the crabbing appeared to be just gangbusters. Campsite reservations are through the National Park Service, and having paddled the bay several times, I have good knowledge of those with calm anchorages and nice beaches. If this is appealing to the group, I can supply more info. There is at least one public ramp with good facilities and overnight parking. BTW, Whalers were a common sight, with 8-10 sightings over the 3 days, mostly Montauks and Nausets. Although I love my kayak, I found myself longing for my Montauk a few times during the trip!

One more thought about Tahoe: No carbureted
two-strokes allowed, which I suspect
would be about half or better of us
(including me).

BTW, there's some offline e-mail discussion
going on about this. E-mail Hoop if you
want to get in on it.

I am interested in a California get together. I am in process of moving from Bellingham, WA to Chico, CA. I'm going from 10 minutes from salt water to about 4 hours. I wouldn't do it but my kids like to eat. Any way I can trailer my 18' outrage to the Bay area. At this time I can't participate in the discussion of where to go as I have never been boating there.

Hi all... As Chuck referenced, we've been doing some off line discussion (email) on options, and its clear that there are enough of us interested to do something. Chuck suggested the 3rd weekend in May, between Mother's Day and Memorial Day. That would be one or more of the days of Friday, May 18 to Sunday, May 20.

Location possibilities seem to be two ... Tomales Bay or the Delta. We don't have to decide yet, though! Let's keep talking and thinking about it! Regards, Hoop, San Jose, CA

May 18 to 20, 2001, are the dates. The Delta is the place. Before too long it will be time to work out details!
