Any interest in a BW Rendezvous here in the Bay Area this summer? Raft up at Angel Island or maybe beach at Treasure Island? Tom

Has anyone thought about a route for a cruise sometime during the rendesvous? Any suggestions out there?
Hoop posted 04-07-2001 01:40 PM ET (US)     Profile for Hoop  Send Email to Hoop
So many trip options ... I've got a Delta guide book by Hal Schell that outlines a prett big route. I'll check it out. And Chuck had earlier suggested (humorously?) the "Lost Isle" destination ... my guess it is an hour away. Hoop

I've got a buddie here at work that's had a
big (30-something) SeaRay up in the delta
for a few years. I've started checking with
him on a route. Watch this space.

I'm still lookin' for that book ... and I'm getting close to the "worst possible scenario." I may have to ask my wife where I put it. Hoop

Here's the e-mail traffic with my Sea Ray
buddy Al:

Me: A bunch of local whaler owners are have a rendezvous in the Delta in May (at Rio Vista,
more or less). Any suggestions on places to
go and things to do?

Al: There's a bunch of things. If you like
to party, there's always Lost Isle on the San
Joaquin at light 22. It's at 37 59.898 N,
121 27.018 W.

In Rio Vista, there's a couple of good
restaurants, Foster's Big Horn and the
Point(has a guest dock). The Hotel Del Rio
and Pineapple's Chinese Restaurant in
Isleton are good, too. Take a look at
www.californiadelta.org for other ideas!

Let me know what particularly you're looking
for; food, parties, cruising, gunkholing,
etc.

Me: We're primarily looking for a cruising
route with interesting sightseeing. We were
already planning on hitting Lost Isle
(Admiral Linda's (my GF) suggestion),
probably for Saturday lunch. A place to for
dinner on Saturday would be a good idea.

What's gunkholing?

Al: The previous places I mentioned are
pretty good. There is also Riverboat II at
Isleton at the intersection of the San
Joaquin and the Mokolumne.

Gunkholing is anchoring out for the day or
weekend. If you go up the Sacramento from
Riovista towards Walnut Grove, hang a right
just befor the Walnut Grove bridge into the
Georgiana Slough. About 2-3 miles down
stream is a nice sandy beach on the left hand
side.

It sounds like we have some good routes to choose from. Do the restaurants typically have a courtesy dock or a public float nearby? I have been by Lost Isle when putting in at Stockton, but it was in the winter and shut down. I understand it is quite the destination during the warmer months.

Chuck,

Thanks!

B&W Resort is right at the intersection of the Molelumne and the San Joaguin. The Riverboat II is only a minute or two away by boat.

I would add that Doug is bringing some kids, maybe Tom. So family rated is good.

Rio Vista is probably 45 minutes to an hour away ... in the opposite direction of Lost Isle. Isleton is a short 10 minute drive away, but probably 1 hour 30 minutes by boat (?) with interesting things to see.

Regarding dinner on Saturday night, would you be thinking dinner out or cook it ourselves barbecue at B&W ?

I don't much care whether we go somewhere
for dinner or BBQ. If we BBQ, what would
work is to have everybody bring their own
main course and side dish to share. It's
a small enough group that we should
coordinate types of side dishes so we don't
end up with eight salads. Or worse, eight
veggie dishes (I HATE veggies.). We'll
also need to coordinate charcoal (it's a
side dish ;-) and starter and such.

Sounds good regarding your barbecue suggestion. I'll have to think what I can bring! (You hate veggies? And you live in nouveau cuisine California? !!) I'm inclined to bring hamburgers to grill, and charcoal, and charcoal starter, and hamburger flippers, and ...

I have one of those little portable propane grills that I will bring, but we will surely need others since it's pretty small. I like Chuck's idea about coordinating side dishes. Should we do a sign-up list on the Yahoo board? If there is interest, I'd be willing to "import" some seafood from Santa Cruz.

Andy,

B&W does have a grill we can use. Bringing spares still makes sense. Yes, I think we are ready for sign-ups! Email is probably better for that as you suggest. (BTW, I'm really looking forward to seeing your boat and your canvas!)

I hope to "get wet" this weekend! Saturday,I will replace trailer rollers, repack bearings, replace winch and go for a little spin. Sunday, weather permitting, a little salmon fishing before the commericial guys scatter the fish on May 1. I'm getting stoked for the rendezvous!
triblet posted 04-20-2001 07:43 PM ET (US)     Profile for triblet  Send Email to triblet
Yep, I live in nouveau cuisine California and
hate veggies. If Wolfgang Puck ever gets on my boat, I'll drown him. He's made it hard
to find a good meal. I didn't eat veggies
when I was a kid either, and I ended up 6'5".

I've kicked off the signups on yahoogroups
(yahoo bought egroups).

I have a couple people asking me about the rendezvous but I lost the address. Would someone print a link for me?
Thanks

We are taking signups for Saturday dinner, May 19th. I just sent an email to BostonWhalerNorCal@yahoogroups.com . Let me know if you would like to be added to that distribution list!

Your Rendezvous seems to have come together.
Guess this will be the first of many, this summer. How many are attending?

Be sure to have a "Rendezvous Secretary", Jim Hebert style, who can chronicle the event with words and PICTURES. We'd all like to see a Cetacea page or something like that.

I'm planning on bringing a digital camera,
provided I can find the guy I loaned it to
(my boss's boss, who was supposed to be back
yesterday, but hasn't showed up yet).

We'll figure out the writing part.

We've got 7 boats confirmed, one "maybe". Two are classic Outrage 18's, one is a 73 Sakonnet, the "maybe" is a 94 16SL, and the rest are Montauks of various vintages. Should be fun!

I'll be bringing a pretty nice digital camera to capture all the events of the weekend. I'm sure we'll all be able to collaberate on the writing for an interesting rendezvous post. Nancy and I are really looking forward to this weekend, especially meeting all our Whaler friends in person. See ya all there!

Our "maybe" has turned into a "confirmed".
The boat stuff is packed, I did get the
digital cameara back from the bosses boss,
and all I have to do is pack my stuff: two
shirts, two shorts, two swimsuits.

And the boat's waxed.

Done.

Have fun, you guys!!

I look forward to reading the account(s) of your event and looking at the photo record. Take pictures with people in them, so we can put some faces with some names!

First report back after the event: Gosh that's fun! What is it about the design of a Classic Whaler that makes them looks so great? You can really tell what they look like when you're surrounded by them! My son Steve and I had a blast! Thank's to everyone who came! It was a weekend of happy whalin!

The first annual SF Bay/NorCal Rendezvous was a terrific success! We had a great time with everyone, and can't wait 'till the next event. This was quite possibly the most photographed Whaler event in history, so get ready Jim H....
