This spring I have to move my new Outrage from Anacortes to the Bay Area. My thought was, (since I was there anyway), to spend a +- week cruising the San Juans ether by myself or as a "Classic Whaler Rendezvous".

I have never visited the area and I could use some itinerary suggestions that assume we would camp (land or boat) most of the time with one or two hotel stays to freshen up. My guess would be rain might prevail so canvas will be a must.

Any Ideas?

As for dates... My girlfriend's birthday is at the end of March (a boat trip will be a nice surprize) so I was thinking of early to mid April. Is is still too cold then?

I'd be happy to make suggestions about where to go up there, but April is probably not the time to do it in a Whaler. September, even early October if you really want to avoid the crowds, but not April.

lhg is talking about heading our way in July. Perhaps we could work something around that.

That might work, I would have to bring the boat back up there after I re-power her down here or store it in Anacortes until July.

I'll have to gage how much trouble towing from SFO -> SEA and back is. I don't have the 25' road miles that Larry has under his belt. I am currently looking for a new tow vehicle, maybe a used Crown Vic.

What is a good length of time for a comprehensive visit? It may be my only chance for some time. As for lgh, how long were you and Larry going to cruising around, and was he bringing the Whale or t/t Whale?

How long is hard to say, it depends....but you could zoom around and see most of it in three days or you could spend two weeks and hit many of the popular anchorages/resort/marinas.

lhg is planning a trip from Everett to Port Hardy, B.C. and as far as I know, he hasn't decided on which of his boats he is bringing. I believe he may be joined by one or two other midwesterners and their boats. I do not believe he has made his vacation trip a Classic Whaler Rendezvous per se, nor am I inviting myself along with anybody, but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks Tom,

For now I will plan on a summer trip and wait to see what Larry's plans are as to "party crashers" on his inland passage trip.

I most likely will come up to move the boat in March so I can add the extra motor. If you available we could meet in Anacortes then and you can give me the three hour tour.

I know of a nice 17' Sport or Montauk in the San Juans you could use. (leave your chainsaw at home)
Anything before July is hit and miss. If you do come back in the summer make it as long as possible and enjoy the Canadian Gulf Islands too. That said, Roche Harbor on San Juan Island is only 75 minutes from Anacortes. So a quick trip into the San Juans is possible.
