Any whaler enthusiasts want to gather for a trip/party/outing??

I've been trying for almost a year now. there are at least 5 people here in the Tampa Bay area, probably more. I usually go to Bear Can island in Bradenton/Sarasota or Eggmont Key. Where would you suggest?

I thought it would be fun to maybe put in at Gandy (when it re-opens) Maybe drive over to St Pete Pier, have docktails up their. Their is also a little restaraunt at the base of the pier to tie up to.
It might also be fun to put in at CC and cruise upto Bahama Breeze.....
Whats your boat like?

When would you like to do this? I'm game for it. I'm about two hours North of Tampa and don't know jack about the waters there, so it would be enlightening.

The 14th? I think I can swing it. I'm in Italy now, but coming home Easter weekend.

Anywhere in St Pete are is cool with me. The pier can be a hassle if it is rough(usually it is). Maybe something on the Gulf side too like Pass-A-grill, etc. Whatever is convenient for y'all, I live on the other side of Skyway so if I have to trailer it....so be it.

Bigshot,
Saturdays are better cause you have Sunday to wash, pamper and polish your baby, recoupe and be fresh for Mondays.
Saturday the 13 looks good for me!
I was in Pasa-grille yesterday. A couple of nice watering holes.. Sea Critters is alright, Buffet tunes, but just next door is a place called the Wharf. Cramped little tinroof place full of food and libations. Do you think the out of towners would like Gators in Johns Pass? The beaches are always pristine up near the north end of Honeymoon too!
I don't know the waters south of the skyway..
So what do you think??
Bigshot posted 03-18-2002 04:39 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Saturday is cool but John's pass would be a hike for me if a bit sloppy because I have to run outside. There are nice beaches(for boats) right inside the Gulf and some watering holes as well. Keep me posted, we have time to decide. I know there are a few others in Bradenton....like Eric that may want to join.

I will keep following this thread to see whats happening. I am in Indian Rocks Beach for the winter but my two Whalers are back up in Ohio. I have two other non-whaler boats here in Florida. Maybe I could ride along in someone else's Whaler. Was down at Woody's Bar in Blind Pass on St. Paddy's day. While sitting there sipping green beer and looking out into the Gulf a beautiful big (25' I think)Outrage came cruising in from the Gulf. Made my day! Maybe it was one of you guys. Name on side looked like "Naughty Gator".

I'm in!
I like the Pass-E-Grille area and also John's Pass. Clearwater Pass is nice (Shepard's etc.) Anclote, whatever. I've never been south of the Skyway so that sounds good also.

Eric posted 03-18-2002 10:52 PM ET (US)     Profile for Eric  Send Email to Eric
I can't commit yet. Like Bigshot said, I'm interested. I'm south of the Skyway too. Egmont might be a good choice if you've never been there. Anyhow, I'll "watch this space".

I work a lot of Saturdays, and my wife works every alternate one. Anyhow, I'll keep checking to see what develops.
As Bigshot might attest, I haven't been the most reliable for meeting other forum members, but I am interested.

I am in with my 13, just has to be a semi- calm day. 13's beat the crap out of you.
Bigshot posted 03-19-2002 10:53 AM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Ok so we have:

1) Eggmont key(great place to spend the day and snorkel, etc). It is located just South of Don Ce sar etc and is in the Gulf. Easy drive from North or South and water ic clear etc. No place to go, you are on an island. No restrooms or restaurants, etc.

2) St Pete Pier. Great place to meet but maybe by car IMHO. Can be difficult to park and there is nowhere to boat unless you raft(ie:no beaches).

3) Pass-A-Grill. Just North of Eggmont Key and south of John's Pass. Has a few watering holes and a yachtclub, etc. located on the ICW and a scenic place. There are beaches just west that are known for partying and hanging out on boats, etc.

4) John's Pass. North of Pass-a-grill and just south of Clearwater. The most "touristy" of destinations. Plenty of bars, restaurants, shopping, and beaches. No place where 5 boats can raft up on a beeach etc as far as I know.

Buster....I assume you will be trailering from Miami. It would have to be a real calm day if not:)

For those like Buster, hotels are plentyful. If you have not been to the west coast in a while, well worth the trip.

I am close to all 4 locations by either boat or trailering. Eggmont is the closest of course but Pass-a-grill is my vote. Any other destinations or ideas?

Bigshot,
Saturday, April 13.
Egmont and Pass-a-brew work for me.
For the people north of the sky way, we could meet at Maximo Park @ 0830-0900. There are 6-10 ramps there.
You are south of us. Where on Egmont will we find you?
Swellmonster posted 03-19-2002 02:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for Swellmonster  Send Email to Swellmonster
phatwhaler,

I visit Shepards once in awhile. For some reason I keep enjoying the beer there. Parking can be extremely challenging with the clw pass current, but that just makes it more fun. The water is still icy to jump into to get to shore. Sobering?
Tell me about your whaler...

phatwhaler posted 03-19-2002 02:49 PM ET (US)     Profile for phatwhaler  Send Email to phatwhaler
Swellmonster,

My boat is a 1996 19' Outrage with a 150 Merc EFI. I pretty sure it's the same hull as yours. In 1997 after Brunswick took over they renamed it the "20 Outrage"
It has a factory BW T-top.
Comfort package
Fish Package (rod holders, Leaning post/livewell, cutting table etc...)
Garmin color chart plotter
Sitex CVS
VHF radio
Double axle Performance trailer

I bought it off my dad, and it was up on the Homosassa river for most of it's life. Most people assume it's new!

I also think that Pass-A-Grille is probably the best spot becasue there are plenty of places to moor, or beach (Shell Key). John's Pass is also only a 15 minute ride to the north, if everyone wants to go to Gators. Which there is adequate dock space there too.

Bigshot posted 03-19-2002 03:28 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
OK! Pass-a-grill it is.

We can do a south trip later in the year for those who wish to venture maybe in the Sarasota area, etc.

I will look for an online map and figure a way to link it so we all know where and when to meet. Being I am coming by H2O, not sure if I can find the ramp, etc. If the beach is cool, we'll meet there and chill and can always caravan to some joint for lunch. I think it will go VERY smoothly.

Let me find a map and worse case I will e-mail to all so make sure your profile is updated.

phatwhaler posted 03-19-2002 04:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for phatwhaler  Send Email to phatwhaler
Bigshot,

I think we should all meet at Shell Key which is to the south side of the pass. When coming in Pass-A-Grill it is on the right, and the entrance to the backside of the island is in south east corner. There will probably be some other boats headed over there. Shell Island is on both the 11412 chart, (Anclote to Eggmont) and the 11411 strip (ICW) chart which also covers Eggmont channel all the way up to the Anclote Keys. The strip chart is the best for looking at the soundings near the Island.

Boat ramps: Maximo Marina, Fort Desoto (Bunces Pass), Blind Pass Road Ramp, Baypines park.

Looking forward to it!

Phatwhaler out.

See ya'll at Shell key on Staurday the 13th. We should exchange Cell "s before(Friday, etc) so that if weather is bad or emergency happens, we won't be waiting for them, etc.

This gives me time to clean that pig up. I will also bring some spare props if anyone is looking to try them. For either an OMC/Zuki or Yamaha/merc. Let me know if you are unhappy and I'll tell you what I have.

I'll try to run down. We went to the Don Cesear on Sunday (from our canal in South Tampa), it was a little rough for classic 16/17. Three weeks might be enough time to recover (I wouldn't do it again next weekend.) Shell key is a perfect spot. Check Check Maptech.com for online map

Man, am I jealous!! I spent a week at the Don Cesar two years ago, and had a ball. I love the Tampa/St.Pete area. I'm still trying to clear my head from the dinner we had at the Dali Mueseum. Very strange! I think I left few brain cells in Ybor (sp.) City as well. You guys need to take lots of pictures, and keep some kind of log. As we say around here, pass a good time!!

Where can I launch? I know a place just south of Pass-a-grille, but anywhere north I could launch and not have to go out?

You can get a list of ramps from the tax collectors office. Maybe there is something online or somebody else knows of one.

Bigshot,
I sent you a e-mail with some info. The south side of Shell Island would be a great place to rendevous. Think we should invite someone from the local Whaler dealer to bring the new Montauk? Or maybe a different model? I have a point of contact there if anyone is interested.

I'm impressed with how this is shaping up. I haven't made my schedule for April yet, but my wife's off. We have been working alternate weekends, so if I was on, she was off, but we're trying to get that changed. Don't rule us out yet. Bigshot, where do you launch? I've been putting in at 59th Street ramp lately.

but never been to shell island.
I have heard it gets crowded on
the weekends.
There is a public boat ramp right
behind the Don cesar, also one at
Maximo park,Oneils bait house,
Fort desoto,and Bay pines park.
As of right now my wife says
she wants to go.I'm not sure if
the kids will come,Maybe we can

I'll resend to Don and fno and Ed as well.

Phat. Did I put the star in the approx. vicinity?

Ed if people need info on where to launch...can you handle the directions? I am not very familiar with the area.

Eric....I launch from my back yard. 59Th is that right off Riverview drive on Warners Bayou? If so I can meet you there or the Bradenton Yacht club across the river. I will be cutting across tera Cia bay and run next to the bridge if not real smooth. If smooth I am running straight out river pass eggmont and take the inlet into shell key. Get that schedule fixed...you have 3 weeks and 2 days!(I sound like the guy on Junkyard wars)

If anyone else needs maps, please let me know.

I will need directions to launch either in Bradenton and travel with you Bigshot across the bay, or to travel further north and launch closer. Either way is fine with me. I would like to know of a ramp that is in good shape, so any help would be much appreciated. I am looking forward to meeting all of you, since I read your posts almost daily.

Phatwhaler, good idea about the local dealer. It would be good for them, good for us. Something new to examine for a few hours, like a 170, 210, or a 255Conquest.

Don, did not catch you were in Englewood before....sorry! Since you are the only person I know there(inlaws are in Punta Gorda)I have to say this from "Pulp Fiction"

Damn! My brother in the Hood from Englewood!

Anyway, you can launch with Eric in Bradenton or you can tow to my house(right off 275) and follow me to a ramp. We have good ramps and bad ramps, depending on the tide. I have a ramp in my backyard but not recommended. We can also use the ramp at my Yacht club. Would be nice to caravan up there with you and whoever else wants to go. These neck of the woods are very pretty and Dolphin are plentiful.

I know absoutly nothing about the waters on the west coast. I'd prefer to follow someone who has done it before. Also, need directions to the ramp. Now...which boat to take??? the 13' seems to be alittle small if the waters get rough, the 21' has a big hole in the bottom, thanks to a ungreatful realitive, so I guess the 17' is it.
Bigshot, will you help me navigate?

Bigshot, I guess I could launch at 59th (Warner's Bayou), and meet you there. Has anyone discussed departure times yet? One factor is parking, I understand that that can be a problem at 59th on the weekends. I'd hate to have you on the way down the river, and not have somewhere to leave the truck!

At 8:30-9:00 it should be ok. I am having Don meet me at 8am at my house which is just west of rt 75 on the river. I should be at 59th by 8:30-45 or so. We are meeting at Shell Key at 10;00am. I figure about a 45min ride from mouth of river. Takes about 1/2 or so to get to Eggmont. If you want to put in somewhere else, let me know. The ramp by Carlton arms always has parking but you live in West Bradenton right? The one by the 41 bridge has ltd parking too.

I'm centrally located in the county, at SR 70 and US 301 (Oneco area). I guess the closest ramp for me would be at the Green Bridge (not counting the north side of the Desoto Bridge, don't want to run my truck into the water). I never launch there on weekends because of the parking issue. Where's the Carlton Arms ramp?

Hope to see you kingfisher!

Eric Carlton arms is on rt64. The ramp is just West of Carlton arms, over the bridge(braden river) and on your left by the BP station.. Once you turn left next to Bp you make another left into the dirt road going to the ramp. Tricky channel though, if not familiar, do it another time when I can meet you there and show you the channel.

I think we are gonna use Green bridge ramp to launch Don's Boat, shall we meet you there? Say 8:15 or so? If no parking, we can launch at BYC yacht club. Only oproblem with me doing all this is my boat is at my house in the water but I will figure out how to get you all where you need to go(wife knows).

Bigshot,
On good Friday, I went out to Shell Island and that place was "quite busy". Everyone parks on the inside of the island and parks their bows on the soft sandy shore to keep em in place. I also saw a 22 or 23 new looking conquest with a 225 merc. The water around the island looks pretty nice and blue. Right next to the island is Billy Stone Crab House with a place to tie up and get grouper sandwiches and beer and ice to go. Do you have a digital camera to take along?

Janis,

Friends have told me that people do camp in tents on Shell Key. Plan to arrive at Shell Key late morning in my Aquasport 175. Not sure yet whether I will boat all the way down ICW from Indian Rocks Beach or trailer down and launch either at Don Cesar or Maximo Park/O'Neills Marina. Want to try and get some Aquasport console/courtesy lights at O'Neills to mount in my 73 OR 21 console (I know, I know that's a sacrilege but they are neat lights!)

Sacrilege? Wait till you see the beat up Mako console on my 16' (for starters).

Don't worry Bigshot, my wife's coming too. Hope the weather's good.
3 days!
As far as the Mako console on Tampa Tom's 16, I've done the same thing (Aquasport console). My 16 is 40 years old this year, and I'm not ashamed of how it looks, compared to the condition I bought it in. I figure someone's got to save these old whalers, and this one was too far gone to restore.

COUNT OF HANDS!!!!!!

Who is in? Who is a maybe?

What are we doing for grub? I am almost certain that with 10-15 boats there is NO restaurant in the area that can handle us. Do we want to BBQ or bring sandwiches? I am going to bring a mini BBQ grill and some food, no matter what we do....just in case.

Beverages.......bring what you fancy.

For those of you who do not have my Cell# it is 941-224-1989. If you get stuck or lost etc...please call. If it is not an emergency, please use channel 69 on your VHF. I will have 2 handhelds just in case.

Anything else to cover being we are less than 2 days away from the 1st annual west coast FL continuouswave.com rendezvous?

Jimh I think you should fly down for this glorious occasion. Kinda like opening day for Baseball.

Bigshot- I will see you at 8:00 am, My wife is not going because we have a new born that is not ready for any boat trips. My father in-law (actually Out-Law) K.C. is going with me and my oldest son D.J. (19 y.o.) I know that the kids are far apart but some nights the TV is on the blink. ;)

How about beach chairs and alike? And who is bringing the music?? Buffet and island music is fun for the water trips.

I'll be the one in the Silveroldo with the 25 EVERGLADES. Yeh, all the Whalers are either being used by the other family members, or need work, so we will be bringing a new Everglades. Bigshot,

Are you taking props? I have a spare 13 3/8 X 17 ssprop that came off a 85hp zuke.
Not sure what else its fits, I think it came in an OMC box when I bought it new. Should I bring it along?

Also, I have friend I work with from orlando who is bringing his bowrider staying at my house friday nite so we all can get to Maximo ramp 8ish.

FYI:
There is a marked pass that we can cut across to the main channel at red 14 to head west (numbers will get bigger) going under tierra verdi bridge then through to shell island. Do not have to go in the gulf, untill a few beverages later...
Anyone that follows me out, I will make sure you get back to the ramp safe and sound.

I've got fixed and handheld VHFs, and will have my cell phone too. Bigshot, is that your call sign on the radio?
Mine's Floating Doc.
I need to make a final decision about the ramp. 59th Street (Warner's Bayou) might be better for parking, so that's likely to be my choice. I will plan to launch by 8 to 8:15, to be ready to meet up on the river. Do you have a top on your montauk?
The weather looks like it'll be great. We might be able to run up by Egmont with out a hitch.

We can go hit a few bars or whatever for those who want to go. I just think restaurant parking might be tricky so just in case we'll bring food.

Eric: Don & I will meet you at the 59th street ramp after we get him in the water so count on 8:45 or so by the time we get there. If you get bored, start heading towards the green bridge. I have a Montauk with the BIG "Whaler" decals on the sides....can't miss me. I will also have a blue bimini top but it might not be open, just up like a radar arch. Don has a 20 or 22' I believe. monitor 69 and give me a yell when launched. My handle is "BuzzMeg". I'll explain that later. If any Hungarians here...you already know.

So far we have 8 definates: Me, Don, Janis, TampaTom, PhatWhaler, Swellmonster, FNO, & Eric. 3 maybes: Ed Stone, Trainer, & Smirkless. Still waiting to hear from Jim Bennett, Buster1389, & Kingfisher and his whaler buddy.

Bigshot et al,

Plan to arrive at Shell Key about mid-morning in my Aquasport 175, probably alone. I'll leave my dock at Indian Rocks Beach around 7:30AM and motor down the ICW, under the Pinellas Bayway and out thru Pass-A-Grille Channel to the inside of Shell Key. I expect it will take about 1 1/2 hrs. Most of it is pretty slow going. If Gulf is calm, may scoot out thru Blind Pass and down coastline. Probably bring a steak along to cook on someone's(?) grill and a brew or two. Maybe I'll just catch a fish on the way down to grill. Had good luck yesterday in flats near here. Looking forward to meeting everyone !!!

Jim

P.S. Maybe FNO will share his secret(s) on how he is so lucky.

Thanks for the nice day guys and gals. Could not have asked for a nicer day except for the Gale force winds that kicked up and forced me to camp overnight. Had a wonderful meal at Billy's stone crabs and came back to shell to watch the stars. There were none to be seen due to clouds. The Frat boys were going strong until about 3am but that did not keep us from getting some sleep. The sunburn put all of us right out. We left at 9:30 am and were home by 10:30. I was back out at noon:) When we left a mobile restaurant pulled up and was serving breakfast, neat!. The ride home was smoooooth and filled with Dolphins and a few big Rays. I have not downloaded the pics yet.

Thanks to Laurie for leading the "no more skin cancer" group and for being paler than me under all those freckles (your idea of connect the dots would make a fine tan). Thanks to Carolena for leading the "burn for a quick tan" group (remember, that skin has to last you another 60 years or so). Thanks to Frank & Sandy for a taste of Italy and the idea for the scalloping rendezvous. Pick a date quickly 'cause it's going to be impossible to get reservations. Thanks to K.C. for talking shop. (you got me thinking about grant money again.) Thanks to Don for allowing me to use the head, steal his chair, drink his Gatorade, lounge on his boat (queen of all I survey), and ride his wake on the trip home across the bay. (I banged my knee and bruised my hip, and got wet, but it was fun!) It was a pleasure to chat with you all and several others, and I regret that I got lazy and didn't manage to meet or learn more about everyone. Please forgive any name misspellings. -Cheryl

Whaler Widow? Bet she didn't know what the funeral would cost when we first bought it! :) We did have a great time, and thanks Bigshot for prodding us along. Thanks Swellmonster for the chance to drive the Outrage 20. What a nice boat! I'm planning to upgrade to an Outrage eventually, but between that ride and Cheryl learning from InHerNet (thanks for the favor, Don) that a marine head can fit in a center console, it might happen sooner. Don, I appreciated the conversation about safety issues, and really enjoyed talking to you. Jim, you're my hero for buying an Outrage for $2500. The decals were a really great suprise, thanks so much Janice (now we've got both spellings covered). When's the trip on the St. Johns?

Eric & Cheryl....especially Cheryl:

My father and Mother had a 16 Nausett and did a usual trip from LBI to Pt Pleasant NJ in the ocean. It kicked up some while they were headed home on their 45 minute(normal) ride. All I remember (age 5) was my mother swearing she would NEVER step foot on that boat again. Next thing I knew we had a new 19 Revenge in our driveway.....thanks Mom!

Whenever my parents come to visit my dad always says, "sell that Baja and just keep your WHaler!" I then remind him of the above story. Although the river is "usually" calm, Tampa Bay is frequently choppy and chop in a Montauk......basically sucks.

If you guys are contemplating a Steinehatchee(sp?) trip to go scalloping, count me in. The Eldorado hotel(only one in town I think) is like $50 and not bad(pool). Did it 2 years ago and had a blast. I hope you like banjos because the deliverance will come to mind:)

ValkariaKid -

I like the Salty Dog on City Island. It's more touristy now then it used to be, but you can't beat the Grouper Sandwich. You can walk across the street to the Mote Marine Laboratory/Aquarium and the Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary, too.

Wish I was there now, actually.

Dave is on it. There is a sandbar just west of the salty dog(big pass?) and everyone hangs there. Marina Jacks is better if on a date far food but a bit expensive. Bob's boat house was the best but they made it into condos:(. Cruise the intercoastal and there are tons of joints.

Gulfwind Marine is the Whaler Dealer in Sarasota now and they are right next door to the Salty Dog. (They share a parking lot.)

There are a hundred or so racked boats there; they have to have some way of getting them into the water.

You could get a Grouper sandwich, cold beer, and look at the new Whalers :).
