It's time to think about a scalloping rendezvous. While July might be more crowded, some of the members may not be able to do August. It's time to start discussing a date. Where to round up is the other question. I've heard from a reliable source that the scallops are very thick in the more southern areas, like around Homosassa. We went to Steinhatchee last year, and while it was lots of fun, that's an entire days drive for us. Due to some family committments, we don't plan to range as far this summer.

Where is the southern most area you can do it this year. It was Stinkeehatchee but I know they were talking about moving it south. Years ago they could do it right at the mouth of the Manatee. |

Im off work the third weekend (20th & 21st). Kinda sounds good for me. Not sure if we can scallop up there. Phatwhalers boat came from up there and maybe he knows the shallow waters well. I have stayed there twice before. Nice places to keep the boat in the water.. |

I could do Homosassa.....crystal river is boring to me. I know of a great hotel with ramp, boat parking, trailer parking, bait shop, and a bar with $1 drafts. Best thing is $50/night no matter when. |

I am going to Mac Rae's on August 9, 10 & 11. It is next door to the place Pat posted. It is $50 or $55 a night and they also have rooms w/kitchens for more $$. They have a boat ramp, trailer parking and the famous Tiki bar. Nice clean joint. I have 2 rooms reserved and they have more available but July is almost booked so.....Scalloping is starting July 1st in Homo for the 1st time in like 7 years so it will be crowded. I might tow the Whaler or I might bring my 9.9 and rent a boat, not sure yet. It is my Birthday on the 9th so be prepared....hahahahahahah! |

Lobster in Homosassa.......i doubt it. Wife wants to do a cruise but I am not sure that is gonna pan out. I am very content on swimming with sea cows in the park.....manatees for you non-floridians. gonna bring my scuba stuff I think. Nothing better than swimming in 72 degree water in August.....natural fed spring, always 72 degrees and hence the manatees(they also love fresh water). |

We are working Saturdays for some time, and probably won't be doing any day trips due to the distance from Bradenton. We might find it easier to do a Sunday/Monday, but can't make plans due to some complications with scheduling. I feel bad for starting this thread, then not being able to follow through, but that's the way it works out sometimes. I didn't know then that I would be helping my father move, and renovate and sell his house. |

Just to let ya know, I went to Homosassa yesterday to do the scallop and beer combo session.I snuck up there for one day, before the big holiday weekend and had an awesome time! Coast Guard was stationed near the mouth to monitor traffic(in there 24 BW OR justice w/twins) (rat-bastards, I'm jealous). Several boats to the north. I went out to the 12 marker and headed north to the other boats. Water was 4 foot and crystal! A plethora of the little delights! FWC was flying back and forth in a helicopter. I got my legal limit (2 gall p/p)of scallops in few short hours. You can hear the scallops talking underwater! I put the little delicacies on ice. The tide was rushing out so I made way back the river and headed up to the swimming/sipping hole. I hopped in the cold water armed with a spoon and a bucket and a beer and cleaned them right there in the water. Real easy, the ice had opened them up and I just scooped them out. I cleaned them in the water, lil guts and minnows were every where. I saved the shells to dump them in a nonswim area of the river. As I left the swim hole, FWC stopped me and told me that my registration had expired in June. I told him my birthday was in August and he realized the 8 looked like a 6 and appologised. (be aware, they are out there!) Met some people at the swimhole and they invited me back to their little resort for some cold ones and bacon cheeseburgers too! All in all, a great day weather wise and scalloping was terrific too. |

Thanks a lot BS. I feel bad enough for starting this thread, and not committing to going. I apologize to all for not being able to follow through. I would love to be more active, but can't get on line more than once a week on average; big family crisis. The boat hasn't been launched for about 8 weeks, and I had to contemplate selling it at one point. Probably I can avoid that for now. Something sucks, that's for sure! BS, I look forward to seeing you on the water, as soon as I have a chance to get out again. In fact, I'd help with the new rub rail, if I had time. I need to do one eventually, and would benefit from the experience. Anyhow, going scalloping may not be impossible for us this year, but it's not looking good.

Yep Yep! 16oz ccoooold bud draft for a buck. Something isnt right here, a couple of people walked up and bought two cans of Busch and they spent $4.00 I thought that was the cheapo beer. They also have cheap price food combo baskets for 5 or 6 bucks. Looked pretty good! Cash only! |

No license as far as I know. I would bring a sw if you have it but as far as I know there are no "scallop stamps":)Pat I have 2 rooms and 2 couples....maybe another but they are on their own. I have a boat reserved but I am calling to cancel. the boat itself is fine but you have it till 5pm or so. When in Homo, you need a boat until 2am because everything is so convenient from the water. Once that truck is parked, I never want to use it again. It takes 1/2 hour to drive(by Car) to the restaurant across the river that you could swim to. So to answer your question....I am bringing the Montauk. Not sure what time, maybe early afternoon(my B-day so NO work) or early evening. I am hoping to cruise up with my bud in the AM and let the girls meet us at night. I doubt I will be so lucky:( |

Nick, any chance of a Saturday morning scallop trip on your boat getting me back to the dock by 10? IAC, I have a real nice aireal view map of the area between there and crystal river, if you wanna look at it. FWIW, tommorow up in the h-river, they all are having the Citrus County River Raft Race. BIG event, supposed to be packed, great entertainment @ the tiki-hut and I am sure the other near by facilities and establishments will be busy 2. But the weather looks pretty dismal :-C Still pondering to go or not....... Eric, we will have more trips, take care of the family....... FYI I went scalloping again Saturday 8/3. With 4 people on my boat, 2 novices, we filled the livewell short of 2 hours with scallops (still legal) 4 foot water and crystal clear! Also another idea for a next years trip, on Saturday they had the river raft race up there on the river. It was absolutely awesome, fine! Loud music, hundreds of boats rafted up, water guns, water balloons(found another purpose for my on-board shower) beers and bodies and boats and barb-que. Did I mention beer? Its a great time, we must remember this for next year. |
