The 2002 Apostle Islands Rendezvous site has been updated with some important lodging information.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I have received more than a few emails regarding the Rendezvous and how many other boats are attending.
It appears some folks want to gauge the turnout before they commit to the weekend, which is fine. Trouble is, I don't know how many people are going to be there. Kind of makes getting restaraunt reservations a pain, too.
Please send me an email and let me know if you are planning on attending.

What's the distance from launch to Madeline Island? Also, how far to the other
destinations mentioned? My 15 CC handles big water well, but fuel may be a factor
here.... I also assume most will have VHF for communication.
Regarding lodging: I had a friend who always stayed in a little place called
Cornucopia, WI, but I don't know how far that is from Bayfield...

It's three miles from the Bayfield breakwater light to the same at the Madeline Island YC.
Your 15 will do fine around the islands under normal conditions.
Yes, a VHF is a necessity. I have a handheld I can loan you if you decide to come up.
Cornucopia is on the other side of the peninsula from Bayfield. Close, but not extraordinarily convenient.

Glad you can make it, Whalerdude.
Skred--I forgot to post distances to our crusing destinations, sorry. Here they are:
Michigan Island ~16 statute miles, one way.
I've posted this on the Rendezvous site also.

The rooms that you had on hold are sold out. Do you have any places you can recommend for lodging on Friday or saturdy evening?
I wish that I would have planned this earlier.
I am planning on arriving Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Yes, I know they are sold out. They actually held them a lot longer than they were supposed to. But that's another story.
Try the following link and see what you can come up with.

So how was it last weekend? I'm truly looking forward to getting our little old (new to us) 13 buzzing out to some of the great places in the Apostles. I hope it wasn't too windy!
A few weeks ago we went with friends in their Outrage 24 and beached on Long Island and barbecued. It's so great up there....

Galaxygirl -- In a word. Great.
I'm a little disappointed the turnout was so low, considering the number of people that expressed an interest and the number of hits on the web page. Maybe next year.
Our good friends, the Hahlbecks brought their 1971 Outrage up and Jack Martin (and son, Ryan) joined us in his Montauk. Some close friends of ours joined us for the weekend, also.
Friday was beautiful. We spent the day driving around Madeline Island (should have been boating). Friday night gave us the most incredible display of the Aurora Borealis I have ever seen.
Saturday brought us rain, but relatively calm water. We made the run to Michigan Island and paid the volunteer lighthouse keeper a visit. The two lighthouses on the island are worth a visit. I only made it 1/4 of the way up the spiral stairs before getting totally freaked out. I had to come down, and never did get to the top. I'm such a baby. The view is incredible, I'm told.
We rafted up on the leeward side of the island for lunch and cruised back slowly, as the wind had kicked up. It did stop raining, though.
Sunday morning brought us more of the same. We bid our friends farewell and decided on breakfast. When we emerged from Gruenke's, the sun was shining and the air was growing warmer. We immediately headed for the boat and out on the water. We made the run to Devil's Island in just under 40 minutes. Winds were calm and Superior was calmer than I had ever seen it in the daytime. Temperatures were in the upper 70's, bright, blinding sun; a truly remarkable day.
Thanks again to all that expressed an interest. I'll start working on next year this coming winter. I won't be satisfied until I get 50 boats to attend this Rendezvous. Until then, I am planning a little Minnesota get-together this September.

Thanks for your work in organizing the Rendezvous. If it had been at all possible, we would have loved to have attended. The Bayfield area is a favorite of ours.
It seems that many people are too busy in the summer to give up a weekend for a get-together, but please keep trying. Someday it would be fun to have a big, giant, Great Lakes gathering of Whalers. Just when and where to hold it? Who knows the best place and time.

Thanks for all of your work putting the Apostle Island Rendevous together.
I am going to recruit my local Whaler Forum friends to attend next year.
Please post photos when you can. I would like to see the Devil's island lighthouse.
