It's nearly Whaler weather in the Northwest.
Anybody up for a mid-fall get together?
Oct. 19th,26th?
Blake Islands seemed to work great, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Way too many fish in the river at the moment for that. Couple that with the fact that I have been too busy to get out much, yet and I will be staying on this side of the mountain. I am sure that it would be a good time though. Drag yours this way and go fishing.

Would November be too late? It's never too cold to run around on a boat, but it maybe a bit chilly to sit around for a picnic.

I'm interested.
Not to thrilled about a run to Blake Island that time of the year though.
How about a Lake Sammamish fishing tournament?

Larry,
That sounds tempting, but should probably stay closer to home with Erika expecting in a couple of months. The Silver run in the sound is shaping up to be pretty decent as well, however I fished for 4 hours yesterday and managed to take only one fish.

Shrimp,
November would work just as well.

Dick,
I was thinking about a Fall run in the "snot". A full raingear, wind and waves sort of deal, but would be up for any Whaler gathering.

Matt,
Now you are tempting me. I would love that sort of run. All we get down here is little windblown swells with big chop. Took a ten mile run with it on the nose with three of us a couple of weeks ago. We were all soaked and didn't stick one fish. Not too bad of a run home though.

Matt,

I'd be interested but I'd have to ride with you or somebody else. My boat is put away for the season

Blake is an easy run from Seattle. I'm not sure it's so great on Blake if the weather is fowl but the very same shelter we used this summer has that great big old fire pit inside. That might actually be kinda' cozy.

October 26 or 27 would work for me.

Matthew posted 10-06-2002 02:25 AM ET (US)     Profile for Matthew  Send Email to Matthew
Larry,
Yeah I've felt those "small" winds. It seems like the wind has two speeds East of the Cascades, off and 30mph.

Tom,
You can ride with me. I forgot about that big firepit, that would work great. I was too busy drinking beer, and getting sunburned my last trip to the Island.
The weekend of the 26th is fine, but others would work good as well.

Any other suggestions as to location?

Matt

Well, October has come and gone (and apparently so has out glorious sunny weather) but its never too late, right?

Actually, I am thinking a little get together this weekend might be in order. FORUM contributor Andy Gere will be in Seattle this weekend and I will be getting together with him to talk boats or whatever. This might be a nice opportunity for some of the locals to meet and talk Whalers on a very casual basis.

This could involve boats or not. (The weather forecast for this weekend is BAD.) Maybe just get a beer at some place like Hale’s in Ballard.

Taylor, Greg Cook, Dick, Matt, Al? What do you think?

Saturday, Sunday, Time?

Dick,

I was thinking of meeting at Hale's Brewery/Pub in Ballard at 4 or 5:00 pm for an hour or two of boat talk. How does that sound?

What other locals are around this weekend?

Matthew posted 11-06-2002 03:51 PM ET (US)     Profile for Matthew  Send Email to Matthew
Tom,

I'm 90% sure my arm can be twisted to meet for a pint or three.

FWhat day are you thinking?

Matt

Matt,

Sorry. I was thinking Saturday.

Taylor posted 11-06-2002 07:54 PM ET (US)     Profile for Taylor  Send Email to Taylor
Tom had to send me an email heads up and that will teach me to skip the rendezvous section. I had assumed we were all done for season, but I fogot about the brew pub venue. I'll be at Hale's Saturday.

Ok, great. So do we want to meet at 4:00 or at 5:00?

I sent an email to Greg Cook (Tsuriki BW) but have not heard back from him. Does anybody know if he is around?

My vote is for 4:00.

Haven't heard from Greg for some time now.

4:00 is good.

Bryan,

Hales is in Ballard at 4301 Leary Way.

OK, 4:00 it is.

Here are Hale’s own driving directions: http://www.halesales.com/BrewPub.html#directions

Unfortunately these directions would have you traverse the Wallingford neighborhood on 45th Street which is always clogged and which I avoid at all costs.

My advice would be to take the 45th St exit off of I-5 and then take 5th Ave (parallels the freeway on the West side) from 45th St down to 40th St.

In other words you would drive as though you were about to get on I-5 southbound but instead of getting on the freeway you stay right and glide past the on-ramp. You jog right for half a block and then turn left again and go past the school.

You are now at 40th St which you turn right on. Follow 40th St to Stone Way where you turn left and then almost immediately peel of to the right onto Bridge Way which then goes under Aurora (99) and bends around to the right and takes you to the light at Fremont Ave.

Go through the light (actually a soft left) onto 39th St which takes you to Leary where you turn right and proceed to Hale’s.

It sounds more complicated than it is.

Andy and I will see you all there in the casual seating area of the bar by the front windows.

Sorry I didn't make it.
I don't see well in the dark anymore and with the rain I figured it was safer to stay home.

We missed you Dick.

Thanks for coming Taylor, Al, JD, Bryan, Matt and Andy. It was fun. Maybe we should do this once a month, eh?

Can anyone explain to me how seven guys could drink eighty-seven dollars worth of beer? Oh yeah, they're whaler owners. That's still some serious consumption! I believe I held up my end.
Tom W Clark posted 11-11-2002 01:28 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tom W Clark  Send Email to Tom W Clark
It's true. I remember one pitcher arrived, then I turned to Andy to say something and when I turned back like 5 seconds later to fill my glass the pitcher was empty!

Andy and I almost escaped without paying but alas I was collared before leaving the table. Mercifully, Andy bailed me out as I was short of cash. I hope that $87 included the tip otherwise Andy and my $25 contribution was light.

Hales included a 17% gratuity. You were fine. I'm pretty sure I was the one that took the last half glass out of that particular pitcher. I don't know where the rest went, though.

Hale's Ales were the hands down winners in my careful survey of Seattle area craft brews. Thanks to everyone for attending and to Tom for arranging the dryland rendezvous. It was nice to connect some faces with the names and yak about Whalers in "real time".

Sorry I missed the party.

I had just returned from Japan and was pretty jet-lagged out. Sounds like you guys had a great time. I hope we all can get together sometime in the near future.
