As In-her-Net and I were just discussing, and Phatwhalers reminding interest:

The ultimate in rafting and entertainment, even I have a 12 Guage cannon for the front of my outrage. This event is for the strong and brave. Lots of food, beverages, boats and beads and bikinis! Your in a total no wake zone. This is a great time!

The legendary pirate, Jose Gaspar, and his band of marauding buccaneers return to Tampa to re-enact the historic pirate invasion, which began in 1904. At 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1st, the Jose Gasparilla -will magically appear at the south end of Hillsborough Bay. Joined by a multitude of pleasure craft of all sizes, the Gasparilla Flotilla will make its way north across Hillsborough Bay and into Seddon Channel (the channel between Davis Island and Harbour Island).
The Gasparilla Flotilla, which is comprised of the Jose Gasparilla accompanied by thousands of crafts, is a spectacle like no other as it makes its way up Seddon Channel towards downtown Tampa. Amidst a volley of canon fire, the City is defenseless as the Jose Gasparilla docks at the Tampa Convention Center at 1 p.m. The Mayor surrenders and presents the Key to the City of Tampa to the Captain of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla at approximately 1:05 p.m.

Following another successful invasion of Tampa, the Pirates gather on Bayshore Boulevard for a victory parade, which begins at 1:45 p.m. near Bay to Bay and Bayshore.

Important facts to remember:
Its usually a low tide around 9AM.
Ramps will be very buzy.

When: Saturday, February 1, 2003
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Place: Begins at the south end of Hillsborough Bay, sails north to Seddon Channel (between Davis Island and Harbour Island), continues North and docks at The Tampa Convention at 1 p.m.
Admission: Free of Charge

Whos ready!

I have friends that live on the river. They go with me each year. He has a semi-usable dock available and a ramp that would be best utilized with a 4WD. We are all welcome!
More info in the works.
Phat, the last several years at Lowery Park ramp, the tide was so low that many people tied up the ramp trying to get there boats off. My boat took some big nudging to get off my trailer. I guess I will leave my Defiant at home this year ;) !

Phat, we'll chat later and exchange #'s!

Ok since we got "snowed out" for the Shell key meet....who is in for this? I talked to Don Wilson and Swellmonster and both are game. How about Bill C and FNO? This will be a hoot but you are gonna be in the boat most of the day I believe and there will be literally hundreds if not thousands of boats in the bay for this. Might not be a good trip for the kiddies if ya know what I mean but Pat has been there so he can ellaborate on it and maybe send us a map on where it occurs. I think it is pretty much up the bay in downtown Tampa so I may have to trailer being it would be like a 2+ hour ride in my rig.

This is less than 2 weeks away so everyone check their calendars and let us know. I will be setting up a formal rendezvous for March or April so everyone has time to clear their plans. I want Janis, smirkless, fno, inhernet, swell, etc to be ready for Shell key in a couple months. Maybe Jimh can make it down and meet the "extreme members" of this wonderful forum ;)

Ahoy Mates!
I've been trying the above address but it doesn't work for me.
Try:
http://www.gasparillapiratefest.com/home.htm.

This will give you most info of what you may expect during the days/evenings activity.
Last year during this event, even the cell phones got overloaded at times. The town is busy!

Nick, Don, whom ever...
Again, last sunday, my cell became disabled, ;) again, in the boat. I should have a new one in by Friday of this week, same number, (813) 918-4040. If you need to call me sooner, (813) 870-3273.

We are making a big breakfast at a friends (Bruce and Monica's )house on the river @ 8-9AM.

We should be heading out 9:30ish.

DONT FORGET BOAT BUMPERS!

Nick, Don, Best bet would be to come up to Tampa Friday night, stay at my house. 2 x-tra bedrooms. Saturday is a long, long day! Crash Saturday nite again if needed.
If y'all opt out, then I would suggest to put in at the Brandon ramp on the Alafia river and US 41. (1/2 hr at most by water to downtown Tampa)From that point, follow the channel markers out (W) to the main channel, turn right(N) and make your way into downtown Tampa, towards the Hillsborough River.

Shiver me timbers!

Nick,
Did your parents ground you for this weekend?
If you can get out of your canal, you can be there by boat in less than an hour, do you agree?

Dons gunna be here at 0730! Woo-hooo!

What a great time in Tampa! KC and I left Englewood around 5:30 a.m. and met up at Pat’s (swellmonster) house just after 7:30. Pat started out the day by fixing us breakfast at Bruce and Monica’s house under the oak trees on the Hillsborough River. Pat is quite the cook! And Bruce and Monica are quite the hosts. We had everything from pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, and Pat’s potatoes & peppers with onion cooked on a hot skillet. We watched quite a few boats race down the river with pirate flags and loaded down with passengers and I was getting excited to get in the Whaler and start down to the parade area.

It was a nice ride down the river and we got a chance to see where Pat hit the railing under one of the bridges when another boat pulled into his path. I can see how easily the barnacles can rip open the side of the fiberglass. Since Pat’s boat was in repair, we had the pleasure to have him with us, and I am very glad he was. I turned over the helm to Pat and let him show us around. The closer we got to the parade area the more boats there were. It was unbelievable how close everybody was motoring around, and not in any orderly direction. Everybody was at idol speed, but coming from all angles. Captain Pat is the MAN! He could put an elephant in a horse trailer.

We docked next to a boat that had the girls that made the movie “Girls Gone Wild”. WOW! That was just too much fun. Outside of all the girls and bead tossing, we did see a few Whalers running around. A beautiful blue interior classic that was in mint condition was by far the best. We were hoping to see some of the members of CW out. Janis this party was designed for you and Bigshot since you had your folks down and couldn’t make it, I brought my camera for you and took some pictures. ;)
Thanks again Pat!

I got to go out Friday and fished by the skyway....drowned a few sgrimp, that was it. Saturday I worked on my kicker and put a new water pump in it and that is not the problem so looks like some surgery is needed. The wind was nasty on Saturday. How was it down town? We went up to Indian Rocks Beach for an early dinner and stopped at Ft DeSoto to show the rents, etc. It was definately small craft out there. Glad you guys had fun, next time. We need to start on a March/April shell key rendezvous as well.
Swellmonster posted 02-05-2003 01:43 PM ET (US)     Profile for Swellmonster  Send Email to Swellmonster
Thank you for the kind words Don.

Yes, we did have a great time! All of those boats, drivers and warm weather. The wind made some areas rough to maneuvor, but thats why we have mates to assists us. As we headed out towards open water, there was too much slop from all the boats and wind for us to venture out to the big pirate boat. Dons 17 handled the rough slop well, but we stayed dry and safe.
Dons new 17 MT is sweet.. All clean and set up fine, even had a CD player with Bigshots favorite "Jimmy Buffet" playing.
Don was able to scoop up quite a few beads and share them with others. He snapped up quite few pictures of different boats and a few Whalers.
And yes, what else do you need when you raft up to a pontoon boat with a keg and are invited aboard with a bunch of "wild young women"....
All that we will say is "we been there, done it and got the tee shirt" ;) ;) (.Y.)

Life is great when your in a Whaler!

Ok....I'm in. Southern boaters can meet at my house if you want and we'll caravan up. I am 1/2 mile off rt75 at exit 224 right on the mantatee river. About an hour cruise by boat and 45-hour by car. I say boat baby!

Lots of fenders, a sharp crew, a LONG handled net to catch beads, a motor that can idle well and be very maneuverable, and a 5 gallon bucket! ;)

Any room for two crew members (wife and I) and a cooler filled with frosty beverages? We were thinking of looking for a hotel or Inn near the harbor. Any recommendations?

Gunna be there for the fun! You have no idea how much trubble I'm gunna be in with my young son since I am leaving him behind again. He is the biggest little Whaler dude around and has his own 13 now. Whenever I take my 17 out, he wants to know if there is some way we can take his too. But I can't be a no-show for this one. Anyone got a couch or something I can crash on Friday night? About what time does this event usually break-up and people head home? Pat, hope you find someone to shiver your timber :)
