I plan to be in the San Juan Islands for the 4th of July. We'll be camping, fishing & diving in Canada either before or after the San Juan trip... Any northwesterners interested in planning a rendezvous near the end of June or the middle of July?

I put the 2001 Puget Sound rendezvous together and know the work involved. My current job keeps me to busy at that time of the year to anything but assist.
I like the idea and will offer my assistance to the planner.

Work is busy for me too, Dick, and I'm weak on organizational skills, but I'm willing to try to whip up some enthusiasm. My wife's "Uncle Pete" has a cabin on Orcas Island. If we can't pull off something more grand, we might just organize a crab-feed on the beach at Orcas. Let's see how much interest we get before I talk to Pete... On a nice day it's about a 40 minute run from Anacortes to Petes cabin - where two of the three neighbors are whaler owners.

I keep my Whaler on Orcas at West Beach. Where is Uncle Petes place? I could the neighbor you refered to. There are 3 Whalers in the vicinity. Let me know the dates of your trip so I can keep my schedule clear.

I'll be at Henry Island July 3rd, 4th, leaving on the 5th, probably for a night up at Matia, then back to Whidbey on Sunday. Running up to West Beach sometime that weekend would be easy. So if its not 'the' rendezvous, we should get together for a ropeyarn anyway.
alkar posted 12-30-2002 06:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for alkar  Send Email to alkar
Einar, Petes place is around the other side of the island at Pt. Lawrence. (It's about two coves east of Doe Bay.)

We often duck in to West Beach to grab a snack or visit. I also used to get my scuba tanks filled there from time to time. The guy who used to run that place had a 22' revenge w/ twin Merc 115s, but I can't remember seeing it the last couple times I was there. Does he still have that boat?

We love spending the evening of the 4th in East Sound, so that's the only date that's set for us. We can do the Canada portion of our trip either before or after spending a few days on Orcas, so we're pretty flexible on Rendezvous dates.

Einar posted 12-30-2002 09:35 PM ET (US)     Profile for Einar  Send Email to Einar
Yes, Dale at the West Beach Resort still has his Whaler. It is trailered in the lot up behind the store. He fried both the motors but is pretty quiet as to how it happened. I told him it was from the gas he sells.
Additionally they lost 1/3 of their docks in a storm last year. He is working at fixing that plus their ramp, so he has had very little play time.
Is Sat. July 5th the day? I need to clear this with the boss but it should work for me.

I wanted to bump this back up, just in case there are others out there in the Pasific Northwest area that might want to get together on Saturday, July 5th. Al - does West Beach Resort have any facilities for a day gathering? Howabout Chez Einar? As I said, I'd certainly like to stop by.

Yes,we definitely can meet at our place on West Beach. We have all the necessary ingredients, 150' sand/small pebble beach, facilites and the 3 b's (boats/brew/bbq). July 5th is good. Everyone welcome!! It's about a 1 hour ride from Anacortes.

Yesterday I took my kids and a friend out crabbing. It was cold, and the ocean wasn't very friendly, but we had lots of fun and sun. The trip was a good reminder of why all the time spent of the whaler is well worth it.

We're getting more excited about the coming summer in the San Juans, including the fireworks, the fishing, the eating, and our rendezvous.

Dick, aside from making sure we have enough food and drink, what is there to organize? Do you usually try to coordinate some kind of participation from a whaler dealer?

Dick posted 01-18-2003 02:08 PM ET (US)     Profile for Dick  Send Email to Dick
alkar

In 2001 i had a rep from the dealer lined up to join us but it ended up that he had to do a new boat delivery that day. They did clear enough dock space that we were able to tie up and tour the dealership.
I missed the 2002 rendezvous but a rep from the dealership did attend.

Let me know if you would like me to plant the seeds at the dealer.

Dick

alkar posted 01-18-2003 09:06 PM ET (US)     Profile for alkar  Send Email to alkar
Thanks for the offer Dick. I think it would be great to have a dealer attend, so please do plant the seed.

July 5th seems popular with the few folks who have responded so far, and it fits nicely with my schedule, but that long-weekend is probably a bad time in terms of clearing dock space or encouraging dealer participation. July 4th is celebrated as a family weekend, so I'm concerned that participation might be better if we picked another date. Any thoughts?

alkar posted 01-19-2003 11:41 AM ET (US)     Profile for alkar  Send Email to alkar
Dick, I forgot to ask you which dealer you had in mind. I know "beggers can't be choosers", but it would sure be nice if the whaler rep who showed up knew more about whalers than Mercury motors and Sea Rays.

Sounds interesting. I love the San Juans, but not sure I'd go there on a busy holiday weekend. Maybe ok at a privately owned beach though. I'm not familiar with West Beach, how about some detail. Where exactly is it? Beach-access camping nearby? Overnight parking at Anacortes launch ramp?
Dick posted 01-19-2003 12:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for Dick  Send Email to Dick

We have 3 choices of Whaler dealers.
1.Lake Union Sea Ray
2.Redmond Sea Ray
3.Fife Sea Ray
They are all owned by the same person, this is the group I used to be parts manager for.

I'll talk to the sales manager next week and see if they are interested.

I do have reservations about getting to the Islands on a holiday weekend. I would expect that the parking lot at the Anacortas ramp will be full by the afternoon of July 3rd.

West Beach is located on Presidents Channel about two miles south of Pt Doughty. I have not used the Anacortes ramps in many years an am not familiar with parking restrictions. There are a few other ramps in the Anacortes area that I will check out and report back on.
If somebody wanted to camp for a night they could do so at our place. We have a perfect grassy area right at the beach.
The idea of gathering on Orcas started when a few members stated they would be in the San Juans over the 4th. I know this is a difficult desintaion for a lot of people over a holiday weekend. I would suggest any rendezous in the San Juans be viewed as a supplemental trip and we Nortwest Whalers plan a primary excursion later in the summer as well.
As far as food and drink go I think the best thing is for me to go to the store on Orcas and solicit contributions from those arriving by boat.

The ramp I am familier with is out past the ferry terminal and Skyline Marina, in Fidalgo Bay if I remember correctly. There are also sling launches at Skyline Marina and Cap Sante.

Dick, since you've worked with the folks at the dealerships you mentioned, and you still respect and like them, I'm sure they're fine people. It would be great to have any or all of them present for our picnic.

As far as the timing is concerned, I guess we just need to see how many people are interested in participating on July 5th.

Some folks may decide to coordinate a July camping holiday with their family in the islands. It is, as you know, one of the most beautiful places on earth during that time of year, and there are many wonderful places to camp within a short boat-ride of the party. Maybe we can even encourage some of the flatlanders from the midwest to join us ;-)

Let's wait and see how this thread matures over the next month or two.

I was at the boat show today and talked to Darren, he is the one that participated last year. He said he would love to attend with the biggest badest Whaler they have in stock.

Nice thing about Darren is that he knows Whalers. He was our chief rigger when I worked there and then moved on to sales.

I lived in Bellingham for three years. Bellingham is truly a boater’s paradise. You might consider launching from Bellingham’s Squalicum Harbor. http://www.portofbellingham.com/marinas/sql/default.htm . The marina and ramps are first class. There is a beautiful hotel and restaurant at the harbor (expensive). I am semi-positive that overnight parking is OK but please call the harbor master to check, July 4th could be a problem. I can tell you were to crab in Bellingham Baon your way to the rendezvous. The run to Orcas would only be 1 ˝ to 2 hours. The roughest water on your trip will probably be Bellingham Bay (about 7 miles) and likely to be 1 – 2 foot chop. I unfortuatley live in Northern California so I won’t be attending. But, do NOT pass up a chance to cruise to and hang out a private beach on Orcas Island. There is no better boating in the world. Yes, it is better than Florida.

If you are interested in crabbing location tips, email me.

Doug, we'll try for a crab run enroute to the party at West Beach. I figure it's about an hour and a half run from the crabbing to the party - so all we'll need is some ice.

Dick is back from his brief detour at the hospital, so I'm relying on him to drum up some enthusiasm for our party. The Clarks are conspicuously absent...

Hey, it's February! I am not committing to anything for the Fourth of July weekend until we get a lot closer. But I do think the notion has merit and deserves further discussion.

Might this be a good excuse for an emergency meeting of the Seattle chapter of contiunousWave? I suggest we convene a board meeting at Hale's this Sunday evening, the 9th. Actually, Saturday might work for me too if it’s not too late in the evening.

The July 5th Orcas Island gathering sounds great. When the date gets a little closer lets get a head count. I will be launching in Everett and probably staying in the islands for the weekend. Roche is such an awesome place to spend the 4th. Great fireworks show and dock walking. I was there up until the 3rd last year and was very upset at having to leave. There is just a buzz in the air and is truly a phenominal boating weekend. As far as the rendezvous goes I know 4 different whaler owners that do not participate on the site but have already told me they would like to know about the next gathering. I had just joined the forum last year when the rendezvous took place. Hope we can put something together that will work for everyone.

The best whale watching is in Haro Strait on the west side of San Juan Island. My guess would be that it's 1-1/2 - 2 hours from Bellingham (by boat). I'm sure there are charters that run out of there during the summer also.

Tom, Einar, Taylor and myself got together for a brew and burger last week but spent most of the time talking about the CD.

Dick,

Last year's Rendezvous was great, and so was the one you organized at Lake Washington. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. We'd be interested in one this year, too, but later in the summer. I'd suggest having one out in Sekiu, but it's pretty much a hard core fishing area, as you know, and not too suitable for a fun family outing for a number of reasons.

As Taylor mentioned above I had All Star baseball for my son and daughter come into play from the 5th to the 12th of July. 2 kids, 2 leagues, 2 different cities, same game times. I notified Taylor and Alex directly ( they were the only others to confirm participation ).
I will not be able to host a rendezvous on July 5th.My deepest apologies to others who were considering attending.

Taylor, you have a place on Henry? I used to go up there in summer time with my neighbor Dick Tiegen and family.
