Is there any updates on a possible Whaler Rendezvou or a trip for 2003 that I could possibly join?

Bugsy old man

Have you checked your mouthwash?

Deoderant?

Changed clothes?

You just can't seem to get the Whaler owners closest to you (NE Ohio) to respond.

Just kidding, of course. With this &%#@#* winter the last thing anyone is thinking about is boating. Thought I'd step in and keep this thing alive, just in case anybody gets interested once the thaw comes.

I've been hard water fishing and have not been checking in very regularly. If somebody get's something going I will try and fit it in.

Stay warm and stay off the ice in Erie, it has a tendency to migrate.

Whatever you come up with, please submit it to the Whaler Rendezvous Calendar.

Please send me the following for the calendar:
The date(s) of the rendezvous.
The rendezvous location, e.g. Bayfield, WI.
The official name of the Rendezvous if there is one.
Contact information for the organizer, including phone numbers, email addresses and web site addresses. And optionally, any additional pertinent details regarding the event.

Thanks.

Just moving this back up. Hope I did not hurt your feelings with previous post. Given our winter (still 9 inchs of ice on Twin Lakes) I'm not sure too many people are thinking about Erie.

I stopped at Portage Entry Marine today and confirmed that the rendezvous is on for August. Registration forms were sent out in the mail and need to be returned to Portage Entry Marine by May 1, 2003. If you need a registration form call them at (419)734-5960.
I know we had some discussions last fall about putting on our own rendezvous, but I feel it would be better to combine forces with Portage Entry Marine and have one great rendezvous. This will help out with a lot of logistic problems.

Drive,
Have you been to portside marina? I never have. I am going to run there friday morning. Then the rest of my family will come over on the big boat. The can accomodate big boats to 90ft. which is good.

I will in addition bring my digi-cam and take lots of pics. Look forward to seeing you all there!

Apparently at this one we put on our new hats and shirts and then eat! ;-)

At the last one I attended there was lots of walking around looking at Whalers and then sitting around talking about Whalers. There was also a fishing derby.

Barry, What kind of whaler do you have and where do you dock? I have a 17, but the big boat and where the whaler is mainly is at cedar point.

Thanks for telling what to expect. I am going to do it. Do they put out cards like who owns what whaler and what names are and stuff?

I plan to meet you guys: Drive1 (Jim) and Barry. My name is joe.

When we have our docks at portside, are we allowed to leave them to go explore....with the whaler(s)?

I am interested in the poker run. But is it about speed or playing cards right :)?

I did the Kelly's Island Rendezvous with Portage Entry Marine back in 93-94 or so. What a blast we had. The island is real neet to tour, with things from ice gleisures (sp?) to great restaurants with cold beers. No traffic, just golf carts, and bicycles. The marina put on one heck of a meal for everyone as well. My brother and I took a 13' across from Sandusky, what a trip. It got rough going over, and we split a front seat. All in all we had a blast, and I would love to be able to do it again sometime. Highly recommended for all the family, but I'd take atleast a 17 across the next time. Reagrds,
Janis

I am very interested and have been to Portage Entry Marine a couple of times, they were at that time very Classic Whaler oriented to the max and had some used nice ones for sale!! I will go if there are no Weddings on that Weekend(please God no Weddings). I would really know where to stay and someone could take me in, I have a cabin on Lake Erie in Conneaut,OH. and I would accomidate them sometime!! I am calling for an application!! Jack.

I am going to the Whaler Rendezvou too. I can't wait for it becuase the whaler is going to be 100% complete this year rather than last year where I got it from 0-95% completed.

Our big boat will be there also for the weekend so I will sleep on the big boat and then go with you guys and do whaler stuff. lol. Once again, I am looking forward to see everyone there.

Whalernut,
I have room at the marina or at work for trailer parking. You may use your trailer every night or tie up at one of the docks. My place is near the Marblehead lighthouse. If you need help with accomadations, let me know what floats your boat, ie. hotel, campground, etc.

Anyway, I may have my Currituck or another Whaler by then, but it will be a Classic Whaler!!!!!!!! Thank you-Jack.

Stopped at Portage Entry Marine yesterday to work out some details for the rendezvous. There does not seem to be many members from CW attending.
The Poker Run destinations were discussed and should give everyone a nice tour of the area.
Lodging Choices:
1. Stay on boats - - I will get info on Portside facilities
2. Kelleys Island lodging - www.kelleysisland.com, lots of places to stay including the state park campground. You may take your vehicle, trailer, and boat to the island on the ferry boat. There is a nice launch ramp at the state park.
3. Mainland lodging - commute to Kelleys Island daily. I have plenty of free dockage at my place for anyone wishing to leave their boat in the water on the mainland. If anyone needs trailer or vehicle storage for the weekend-no problem. Anyone needing info on mainland lodging, let me know what you have in mind and we will find accomadations.
If you are planning on attending the rendezvous, please contact Portage Entry Marine soon, resevations need to be finalized and T-shirts need to be ordered.

Almost forgot - anyone who would like to attend and can not bring their boat, we can get you to the island and back daily if needed.

This is way cool!! I can`t wait :) Ya, Sam and I are going to have to be on the cheap as far as lodgeing, but will have a great time none the less!! The only thing I am having a problem with is where to keep my boat and stay, seams like alot of choices, but the most economical would be cool!! I can dock my boat no problem, so that is cool. I sent my registration in on Monday and I ordered the fat guy special XXL T-Shirt :) Thanks Jim so much for that extra effort to help us out, I for one truly appreciate it :) Jazz, I boat mostly in Conneaut, ohio which is the extreme Eastern part of Ohio, only a few miles form Pennsylvania and I live in Pittsburgh,PA. I also go to Kinzua Resovour in N.C. Pennsylavania once in a while, so this will be my first venture into Western Lake Erie, I am stoked and I just noticed that there is a Whinery on Kelly`s Island, anyone up for a little trip there :) Jack.

Hey Gang...

Just want to follow up on the August weekend plans. Does anyone know how many we have signed up thus far. Also looking for recommendations for hotel/motel places close to other Whaler people.

On another note: I believe I asked this earlier...but want to be sure, Is my 13 OK to run to the island...I would say yes as long I am with other Whalers. And how much fuel do you think the 1968, 25 Evinrude will need for the run and back. I normally carry 2, 6 gallon tanks.

Thanks all...don't want to rush the summer..but I looking forward to the weekend and to meeting all the people I've talked to here since finding this site back in June of 2001.

Take care..............................

baybug posted 06-12-2003 09:03 AM ET (US)     Profile for baybug  Send Email to baybug
Yes you can run to Kelley's in a 13 with that fuel capacity. Use common sense, check the forcast, and check the lake. Go to the Marblehead lighthouse and if it looks rough don't go. You can trailer over on a ferry if you want from Marblehead.

On calmer days, you can easily go. It is a very short distance but that area is very busy with boat traffic and sloppy chop makes it very frustrating so be prepared to throttle back, keep the bow up and enjoy the ride. If it is flat and little chop, put the hammer down and you'll be there in 10 min.

I you are driving the boat over, launch at Mazuriks like Dive 1 said - he is the most experienced local on this thread that will be there and can provide you the best info.

We checked accomadations at the island and found out a few interesting things.
1. Most rooms are single bed(various sizes) and priced at $85.00 to $135.00 per night.
2. Some places only rent by the week because it is high season.
3. The state park campground is reasonably priced for anyone wishing to bring a tent and associated gear.
4. Portside marina is a nice set-up if you desire to stay on your boat.

I will post info on mainland accomadations next week. I am checking on a few places that rent furnished cabins.

Samars - do not worry about making the crossing in your boat. I have done this numerous times in a 13BW with the waves running 6'-10'. Yeehaw

I may be with Sam in his `13 footer, I don`t know what boat I will have or if my intereior will be complete, but I will be there for sure, I can`t wait!! I may be turning my Currituck into a Montauk, and will have to buy the parts, 1 at a time, those New prices for Center Consoles and RPS`s are very high, I have some stuff to sell, then I am not sure to have no Bow Rail or a Montauk Bow Rail, or I may just buy a Montauk, my favorite would be an `18 Outrage, but they are like finding a needle in a haystack on Lake Erie, or basically anywhere around me, it seams people hold onto them longer than any other model, I don`t blame them!! Jack.

Hi Whalernut,

I would love to see what you do to your Currituck. Thats what someone did to mine, but mine used to be a Nauset, someone painted it and added the mid-70's fiberglass console. If you would like, see my story in the cetacea page 73....with no new pic...actually its a very very bad picture that jimh thought it was humerous....with no after pic either...anyways I can't wait to see you there!

Thank you Jazz!! I may or may not go Center Console, I may just sell my Currituck and buy a Montauk or?????? Anyway, my trailer and hull are so nice it is hard to part with :) My engine runs strong also :) I can`t wait to meat you and all of the great people from the CWF there!! My ideal boat would be an `18 Outrage, but I just can`t seam to find one, and at a good price that is clean, you can get 22`s pretty close to the prices of the 18`s, my guess is the reason is because the `18 is a really perfect sive for fishing and trailering. Jack.

I appreciate that Jim!! $55 a night isn`t too bad, anything else in that range or less? Sam and I are thinking camping would be the cheapest, but we are checking all angles, as we want money left over to have some serious fun!! Anybody contiplating camping? It does say in the brochure that camping sites have *No Reservations* That`s kinda weird, but Sam is calling tomorrow about what`s up!! We nead a large enough site for the Truck/maybe trucks and boat/maybe boats, man it is getting close :) Jack.

Whalernut,
$55.00 is the cheapest price I have found. This is a very high cost area in the summer. The state park campground at the island is first come - first served. I have heard that you can check in on Thursday night over the phone. You have to pay for Thursday night whether you show up or not, but it helps secure a sight for the weekend. If you guys camp, I have cots you may borrow, but no tents.

Thanks Jim, it looks as though Sam amd I are leaning towards the $55 Room and get it for 2 nights. The only thing I don`t like is that we have to leave the Island before dark, but that is the price to pay to stay inland :) Jim, did you say you had some slips at your place? if so, are any still open that maybe We could rent? Did somebody say beer and cigars? Boy, am I looking forward to this trip! I think David (brother) got a room at the Lakeside, but if he hasn't booked yet, we will stay at the Majestic with everyone else. They have a few rooms left. Are the waters too cool to swim in this time of year? What about fishing? I'm kinda suprised we haven't got something from Portage Marine yet with an adgenda. What about diving? Beings I'm driving, I can bring my gear.
Can't wait!!

As far as swimming, I am not big on that one, i am 5~8" and 280 pounds, my shirt rarely comes off, but I usually make up for it by eating :) Yes, I am excited about the beer and cigars, there is also a micro-brewery on the island and a whinery!!!!!!!!! :):):) I hope you all stay at the Majestic and I hope there are rooms left :) Jack.

Draftmanswife,
The water was 72 degrees at 35 feet today. The water should be 75-85 by August. If you want to dive, bring your gear. There are 4 wrecks around Kelleys Island - easy diving - 6 to 23 feet deep. You will need a thin full suit and gloves(The zebra mussels are sharp). Do not worry about lugging your tanks, I have a compressor and plenty of tanks.

Whalernut,
You should bring your perch fishing equipment. The perch fishing around Kelleys Island is usually good all summer. If you do not want to go swimming, we can fire up DIVE 1 and play combat kneeboard :) :)

So far it looks as though my Currituck won`t make it, unless I get enough money together to buy that New Standard Interior, and then install it all :( Maybe things will work out, if not I am with Same on his old but great 13` Sport :) jack.

I am going to Portage Entry tomorrow. I will get some info and post. I finished up the poker run list today. We needed one more stop and we now have permission to use the ferry dock at North Bass Island for one of the stops. Boaters Emergency Service is providing charts of the islands area, so do not buy a chart for this trip.

Dave and I got reservations at the Majestic. They seem like a real nice, family owned motel. Are we doing a poker run? That sounds fun! Still wondering what Portage is going to do..? Any news yet? I'm sure I'll be the last to know, as the mail will take longer to get here. 72 degree water isn't my gig, and I think I'll pass. I'll bring the snorkle gear and fins, but diving seems abit "cool" for me even in a wetsuit! Now, all I have left to do is service the truck for a hell of a "road trip", and shut down this business for 10 days.
Backlash, I was going thru some pics from the Bahamas Rendezvous the other day, and found a great pic of your boat at Munjack, I'll bring it with me for you. I'll try to find the negative as well.
T minus 18 days:)

Friday - meet Whaler buddies, dinner at the island
Saturday - Poker run, scavenger hunt, dinner at the island
Sunday - Fishing tournament

Info is on Portage Entry Marine website

Draftmanswife,
Bring your dive gear. The water should be about 80 degrees around the island. The shipwreck "Prince" is on the east side of the island. Max depth is 20', if you get cold you can stand up on the crankshaft and get a little sunshine. The water is knee deep if you stand up on the crankshaft :).

The "Adventure" is in the north bay of the island. The wreck lies in 6'-10' of water. Scuba or snorkel is fine for this wreck.

If you still feel the water is too cold - drive the boat while Whalernut and I play combat kneeboard :) :).

If I get over to the Sandbar this weekend I'll look for that 17' of yours. Last night I had my first ride on my 1985 13' supersport. Went cruising the Portage River & for a quick spin along the shore out in the lake. The 1985 merc 50HP worked just fine!
If all goes well I'll ride over to check out the Rendezvous next weekend. Hope thats ok, I missed the 'registration' deadline by months! I do want to say hello to some fellow BW owners if I can!
Oh, Last night while launching my 13' for the very first time, and I was kinda tense about it, didn't want to screw it up or anything, out of the corner of my eye I see a Montauk in the channel right out from the boat launch ramp, mayb 20' away. He was just sitting there in idle looking at me. Not knowing a damn thing about 'ramp ettiquite' or anything, I rushed thru my launch ( getting a nasty scratch on my leg in the process ) cause I was thinking he wanted to take his boat out. Anyway, I get the 13' off the trailer and tied off & was starting the Merc when I hear "Nice Whaler!" He just wanted to check out my Whaler & say hi after all! Very nice folks, husband & wife, and live right there in Nugents Canel where I was launching. I'm sure I'll be seeing them again. Heck, maybe they are even in this Forum!
Cheers

Hello Everyone, I have just recently purchased a 1974 17' Montauk. I keep my 29' Regal at Baypoint marina, which is right by the Sand Bar. I've been a long time fan of BW and finally got one. I am out at the Sandbar quite often and would be interested in seeing some of the boats that everyone has been talking so much about. I may even try to make it over to the rendevous, just to look. It's suppose to be beautiful this weekend so enjoy the water.

Did you get it from Don Lombardi at Marine City? They just got in a Montauk from the 1970's last week. The wood needed refinishing badly I remember.

I don't have a GPS # for the sand bar, but you can kinda see it from kelleys. You will be able to see Bay point, but the sand bar is not that far from bay point. just south of it and there it is...(best place to anchor is the west side....or east side if you know where you go) Bottom line for the sand bar: Follow the leader to it :)

As Jack says, this really was a great rendezvous hampered only by the almost non-stop rain and thunderstorms. There were some 34 Whalers in attendance and Janis (Draftsman’s Wife) got the longest traveled trophy. We met some really nice people from this site; Jack (whalernut), Sam (Samar with his classic 13), Jim (DIVE 1), and Joe (Bugsyg), and were reacquainted with some old friends as well from previous rendezvous’.

Saturday morning Jim arrived, aboard DIVE 1, with two trashcans filled with ice cubes for our coolers, which was much appreciated. Later that morning it cleared and the sun came out long enough for a well-planned and interesting poker run. Dave's (Janis' brother) 17 Dauntless got a real workout during the run with Jack insisting on sitting in the bow!

There were several very nice classic Whalers in attendance; a 22’ Revenge with twin 90 Honda 4-strokes, a 27’ full cabin with Armstrong bracket and twin 225 Yamaha 4-strokes to mention just a few. I was really impressed with Joe’s (BugsyG) 1966 Nauset with the cabinet quality teak work on the center console and nice custom made vinyl cushions.

Saturday night we had another great dinner at the marina provided by the Village Pump. Portside Marina had beautiful new aluminum floating docks and the only air-conditioned restroom/shower facilities I have ever seen at a marina.

Thanks to Portage Entry Marine for another fine rendezvous.

There's no place like home, well except for a Whaler Rendezvous. Got back last evening, after a total of 2868 miles. I just can't think of where to start in telling how great this trip was. A much needed vacation. A big thank you goes to Portage Entry, not only for the nice plaque I recieved for the furtherest away, but for the Poker Run trophy as well. The hospitality they gave all of us was most welcomed, and appreciated. It was great putting faces with all on the wave. Barry, a big thanks for running me inland for those decals, and what a treat riding in your smooth, sweet, outrage. Thanks again everyone, and looking forward to next years:)

I do have to say, I really like the new B/W 150`s, i feel they are the nicest New Whaler beeing made and it has tons of room in it!! I do recall we talked about your wifes Harley D. Sportster that only has 1 inch of travel left and we also taked about the new Indian motorcycles and that they have their own engines now. I hope to see you next year if there is another rondevous, I will surely be there with my Currituck this time :) Nice to have met you and your wife!! Jack.

I remember, Jack! Good conversation! Was tempted to go back to Lake Erie again this weekend, but the forecast is a replay of last weekend. Might try one of the local lakes instead. Once a year isn't often enough for a gathering like this. Guess if we were willing to travel as far as Janis, there'd be LOTS of rendezvous to attend! LOL! Good luck reconfiguring your boat. Look forward to seeing it next year.

Boy what a nice Boston Whaler Rendezvou for 2003!

It was really nice to see everyone from the web site.

Backlash:
Really nice to see you and your wonderful boat. I have noticed the Radar Arch really adds and extra custom touch and makes it look factory made. Another nice feature about the boat was the Yamaha V-6 Engine (runs like a champ!!!)-- Please tell Mrs. Farnsworth thats I said hello :)

Jack:
You didn't have the currituck, but at least you got to see other Boston Whalers and the owners. It was a lot of fun. Getting to talk to you about improvements in our Whalers really gave me a lot of tips.

Janis:
Congradulations on the big win of the Poker Run and the Long Distance award! I especially liked talking to you because you had the honor of meeting Swellmonster and Bigshot thats everyone talks to. I still bust out laughing when you said to the Sea Ray owner about bringing a Sea Ray to a Boston Whaler Rendezvou is mutany! LOL!

Post Rendezvou:
I was heading back to the main land on Sunday with my bimini top forward into the boot. I thought it would compensate for the weight and waves. The boat was lundging forward and 1 to many times and my bimini let loose and I almost lost it in the water. I would have if the front stantions wouldn't have been connected. I put it back together, and then noticed that where the gunwhales are on both sides are scratched heavily. Paint and everything came off to bare gelcoat in about a good 12-inch streak. I needed a good Asprin from that trip. JAZZ has to go back anyway to get repaired over winter in a scratch in the side yet. But to sum that trip up, think of what Oliver Hazard Perry said once, "DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP!"

Hope to see you all once again for a Boston Whaler get-together. P.S. I will have pics from the Rendezvou on my Whaler pic site soon!!!

2800 miles isn't too bad, at least that Chevy of mine didn't miss a lick, and I was able to avoid all the major idiots on the road. Being a new Whaler member, Moe, you'll soon find out, no distance is too far to be with "family" :):):)
Take care,
Janis

I finally have time to post after the rendezvous. I have received a lot of e-mails and I would say that everyone had a great time(inspite of the rain). If we have another one next year, we will find 5 different stops for the poker run(new territory). The fishing tournament had a marginal turnout, but the lake was a little choppy. Everyone that participated in the poker run tied up to my guest dock. After seeing my setup, if anyone needs to use the dock for a few days, just let me know.
All of the people from the Fire Dept. had a great time. We really enjoyed meeting everyone and checking out the boats.
I just want to say "Thanks" to everyone for participating.
Jim

The rendezvous sure got us addicted to Lake Erie. We've ignored the forecast for the last two weekends and tent-camped at East Harbor State Park, spending the days on the lake. Gotta take a break this coming weekend and catch up on stuff around the house! LOL!
