fno is also interested in doing a rendezvous on the Suwanee River which is pretty far north but also good for our panhandle and Georgian members.....let's try and set a date for that as well, maybe in May or June? reply to his post on that issue but i just wanted to bring it up.

How about the protected waters of the St. Johns river. March is usually the windiest month. See post on "Another Florida Rendezvous. I'm not out of this Shell Key trip yet unless we decide on another location. Smiiiiiiiirrrrrrkkkkkyyyy.

Joyce and I would like to try to make the Boatweek rendezvous. Is this just a one-day event? Is there a specific departure time and from what location?

Bigshot, if you want to just e-mail me privately, you can use my profile e-mail.

Maptech data of Shell key looks great!

If I can get my Yamahas put back together (trying to change the waterpumps by myself), we plan on bringing the Temptation.

Thanks in advance!

Wow! All the way from the carolinas....I am flattered. I am posting this so that if others have the same question.... This is just a one day event(saturday) but that does not mean it is a one day event. By that I believe Janis and Pat and a few others continued the festivities thru sunday. We can arrange a point of rendezvous but last time we had a couple of them. DOn and Brian met at my house and we cruised North, the rest met at the Boat ramp at Ft DeSoto and cruised NW to the spot. I say we arrange some points to meet like last time. I will leave Pat in charge of the ST Pete gathering and I will do the South and we will all meet at the beach on the North Side of Bunce's pass which is just west of the boat ramp and just south of where we met last time at Shell key. He/She who needs a map, let know.

I love it!!! Bringing the Temptation to Florida! Sounds like taking the rooster to the hen-house!! ;) Like the motto says "where the good life gets better!

Just got back from Wal-mart looking at some tents. Hmmm, campfire, beach, boating or a plain hotel room for the same price, but I cant keep the hotel......
If I camp, I will bring a boatload of campfire wood, and did I say food?
Sounds like steak and seafood kabobs!
Maybe bacon wrapped filets?
Good drinking=good eating!

Glad you like the maptech!

Its Monicas birthday and her and Bruce will be up in Hooters turf. :(

Ya'll, let me know what I can help with!
Lets start the year off right! Woooohooo!

It will be worth the trip down just to meet the legendary Bigshot!

Yes, We would like a map. Bigshot, is your house close to where we could meet? I would like to follow you, if you don't mind. I have not had a chance to put on any of the electronics yet (depth, charter, etc), so we will be "flying blind".

Just let us know where and when we can meet.

Thanks!

Ace

Anytime any place is cool with me. I will send out the maps to you. I am just south of the Sunshine skway bridge. The rendezvous is about 5 miles west on the North side of the skyway so from my house I would say maybe 20 miles, 10 being in the Manatee river. I always fly blind, I don't even have a compass, just a handheld GPS and VHF so if batteries quit, we in trouble(kidding). If you need info on hotels in the area, go to hotels.com or expedia.com, do I look like a travel agent? ;) Actually there are hotels in St. Petersburg area that Swellmonster can direct you to(waterfront) and there are a few hotels right off rt75 by my house and you are more than welcome to keep your boat at my dock on a protected canal(120' of dockage). More than 3 days and I'll start charging you rent.

Everybody attending Boatweek should be aware that the spring kingfish tournament starts at dawn on 3/29. The base will be Billy's Stonecrab Restaurant on Tierra Verde so Bunces Pass and Pass-a-grill channel, which are the north and south boundries of Shell Key, will be very, very, busy. The boat ramp at Bunces Pass, which opens at dawn, will be chaotic all day so you may want to consider an alternate.

Phatwhaler has been recalled back to active duty, and is currently in Charleston, SC. I may be back for the weekend of the 29th though. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather down in Pinellas county. The weather here in Charleston has been pathetic.

phat out.

Bigshot - Talked to a guy that fished the kingfish tournament in 1999. He said Shell Key was a mess from Friday on as entrants stayed overnight to get into the gulf at dawn on Saturday and Sunday. That was four years ago and this event is bigger than ever. Might be worth checking with any kingfishers you know to validate this info. Maybe an alternate site or move it forward.
Swellmonster posted 03-10-2003 09:33 AM ET (US)     Profile for Swellmonster  Send Email to Swellmonster
I posted the tournament question on Florida Sportsman. Nobody is sure about. Someone thought it was the 19th of April. I called Billys Stonecrab, The kitchen crew knew nothing. But if there was one, he said it would not be too buzy. Ill try again later. Also its early for the Mack Daddys.
Bigshot posted 03-10-2003 10:02 AM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Should we do it where we did it last year at the north end of Shell Key or will that be just as busy?
Bill C posted 03-10-2003 02:21 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bill C  Send Email to Bill C
The north end will be worse because it is so close to Billy's. Also the big boats will be there because there is more water. The following is from this past Fridays (03-07-03)St. Pete Times:

"The spring kingfish tournament starts March 29 with the 15th annual Randy Keys Kingfish Classic.

Registration is 6-8 p.m. March 27 at Billy's Stonecrab Restaurant in Tierra Verde. Fishing starts at dawn with the weigh-in scheduled for 3-4 p.m.

There is a $107 registration fee per boat. There are categories for women 17 and older and children 16 and younger. Call 542-3900 for more information."

So we should do it where originally planned? I don't know that area so you guys are gonna have to help us out here. It has to be a beach that we can easily find parking for 10+ boats.
Bill C posted 03-10-2003 07:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bill C  Send Email to Bill C
I can check the channel that runs from Pass-A-Grill to Bunces Pass and see how much water there is at the south end which may be an alternative. I wasn't at the last Shell Key party so don't know where you were though from the pics looks like the north end. Regardless, will be very crowded. Don't know of any other good possibilities because of the booze restrictions. Worse case is back to Beer Can or move ahead a week or two.

Beleive it or not, Florida Sportsmans forum doesnt know too much about it.

Obviously some of the knowledgable whaler folk have some scoop.

Keep the party at south shell key in bunces pass, just west of ft desoto boat ramps out on the starboard side just before ya hit the gulf. There are plenty of ramps, lots of parking, and always room for whalers! If there is a tournament, they will be fishing off shore, not on shell key. They will be gone by the time we launch. Ive been there on memorial day weekend, and there is always more room.
Like Hooter probably said, Dares olways room fer anudder quill in a porqupine!
Bring it on!! YEPPER!

I asked from the 21st to the 24th if people wanted it changed but got no response so being Janis is coming from Daytona area and Ace is coming from the Carolinas, etc we need to maintain our date of 3/29. I have a couple SeaCrafts coming as well. Not gonna be the biggest rendezvous, but it is still early. we will also plan for one in the summer say around late June or mid July?
fno posted 03-12-2003 09:06 AM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
The Suwannee is still flooded out as well as our own river which has surrounded our house last night. We'll have to keep an eye on the weather and pick a tentative date that can be flexible. Hopefully the eater won't come up too much more. Makes it hard to run out for more beer.

Your right, most of em are older, but its volenteer work. They love the water just like us. A lot of training, straight from the Coast Guard Manuals. Advanced coastal navigation couses, etc.. I just got military discount at a hotel "another perk"
Did I say that when preparing to make my whaler an operational facility, that there are plenty tax advantages for purchases, upgrades etc...?
Bill, check your local cgaux. I believe that they will even come to your house to do your 10 minute inspection, and give you that nice little sticker that may keep the lawdogs from randomly stopping you.
Also a safe boating course will give you a 15% discount on your boat insurance. Sure its a lot of redundant info, but it also makes you realize how much you already know. If you learn only one thing, it adds to happy safe whal'en! Plus, take a spouse or kid with you, and keep it family boating.
Oh well, cheers!! ;)

Yeah yeah yeah.....you guys are the Harry Krishnas of the boat ramps. "Excuse me sir....can we do a complimentary inspection?" And we wonder why the ramps are too crowded and slow. Gotta bust on you Pat.

Are you guys gonna swing by and do some inspections in the morning? Say 10:30-11:30?

Keep up the good work Pat! The auxiliary has saved a lot of boaters by informing them about the safety items and defective or out dated flares they were not aware off. Some people believe that since they have a drivers license that they know everything there is to know about boating.

Community service helps everyone! If you don't believe me just ask the judge. :)

Wish I could party with you all on the 29th, Hope to see you up on the river.

Swell - Sure would be nice if you are doing inspections that morning as I am 10 minutes from the ramp. Gonna put my CGAUX sticker right next to my AARP and Meals on Wheels stickers. Does my disabled parking sticker get me a better spot at the ramp?

I dont do boat inspections. I just get involved with Tampa Harbor patrols and cruise ship escorting, for now.
BYW, if you do have old inspection stickers, they come off real easy with KY Jelly or hearing aid lubricant. :D

Also, I, along with most other rendevousisers, dont need another reason for johnny law to pull me over. I would rather have one less reason, and know my boat is up to par. Last year, I barely passed, my flares were expired, which could result in a ticket from johnny law. I purchased them next dooor and got my sticker.
Pura-Vida Baby!

Big,
Attended last years Shell Key rendezvous in my Aquasport 175 (my 68 Sakonnet and 73 21' Outarage are up in Ohio). Was hoping to make the Shell Key rendezvous again this year but have to be in Clearwater on that day for 90th birthday celebration of my sweetheart's mother. Really enjoyed last years get-together with you, Swellmonster, InHerNet, Draftsmanswife and others. Am sure it will be an even bigger blast this year. Do hope to attend the Port Huron, Mich rendezvous in July and possibly Lake Erie one in August with my restored Outrage now powered with 2003 Merc 150 XR6 (Hasn't even been run yet). Best wishes to all and great Whalin'!!!!

Weather is calling for a chance of rain on Sat but just a shower. We all know how accurate FL weather is(especially that far west). We are still on rain or shine unless everyone wants to make it Sunday but I am not worried about a little rain. This time of year we have a 50% chance EVERYDAY.

HEADCOUNT! Who is in?

1)Me and about 5 other friends, may have to bring both Whalers.
2)Swellmonster after 12pm.

Who else? Please post if coming so I can e-mail my cel#, etc.

Bradentonwhaler, BillC, Smirkless, Eric, Janis, fno, Jim B, Don, who else?

Being nobody wants to comment....I will be at Shell Key on Saturday(weather permitting) and I will be there on Sunday(weather permitting and Saturday is a washout). So Don, fno, etc if ya want to go to shell key or beer can beach on Sunday, give me a buzz. My bud in Sarasota is itching to go so....if saturday is a washout, I will DEFINATELY be there on Sunday. if saturday is good then chances are I will be at Beer Can beach on Sunday. Clear as mud? I will be in the Newport unless it sells by then(please).

Big,

I submitted a reply to your post to me of 3/20 but mine apparently didn't make it. Appreciate your offer to meet another time; might be possible but schedule pretty filled between now and when I go back to Ohio May 4, including about 5 days in Tennessee to look at some lakefront property, attending a reunion with my sweetheart in Clearwater, and a weekend fishing trip to Boca Grande. Maybe we can sneak something in somewhere - probably come down in my cruiser not my 17' Aquasport. Hope you all have a good time this weekend, Sat or Sun, good weather or not.

I am on the OTHER side of that 13 mile long bridge. My boat is kept in my Backyard(I live on the Mamatee river). I have a ramp in my yard but you would not enjoy using it. Give me a call when you launch and I will meet you somewhere or give ya directions. If I am alone or with wifey I can meet you wherever. If I have a few friends I may have to limit my driving and conserve gas, that 2 stroke is a pig and I only have 12 gallons so cutting back to the skyway may not be an option. Weather looks good for friday/saturday.

Saturday sound like and is a winner! Weather APPEARS 2b improving. Draftman and wifey will be here tommorow. I hope to get that 24 out Friday night.
All the gray hairs ;) from cgaux will be out in Tampa Bay Saturday. If they can hang, I hope the rest of yall can.
But I will put my bimini back on just in case!
Maybe I should use my submergable handheld VHF so I wont ruin my cell? ;*)
Anyone doing food? Ill bring the saltwater.
Woo-hooooo! Yeppper!

You have to lay off the pipe Pat!

See ya'll tomorrow around 10:30ish. Remember we are going to try a new spot at shell key. It will be the first inlet North of Eggmont key(Bunce's pass) on the North side of the inlet. If you get lost, make sure you have my cell phone. I should be driving a 17' newport with blue bimini and black Johnson 88 on it.

Did you say "lay some pipe?"

Well the weather was a success, the turnout was not. But we had fun. We had Myself and 3 friends, BillC, Swellmonster, and Janis and Tom. Another SeaCraft guy showed up but never came to where we were and I guess did not care. The water was calm, the skies were blue, and the beer was cold. Thanks Bill for the extra couple gallons of gas, I ran out about 500 yards from home. I got in just in time to plow over a PVC pipe channel marker that did not reflect from the spotlight, no damage of course. Thanks again and we'll do it again real soon.

Janis are you working on St John's river and some houseboats/hotels?

I made it out fishing Saturday.I pulled
in my last grouper at 9:50 AM.
I was 30 miles west of Egmont.I headed
back towards passigrille channel to drop
in on you all and drink some of that cold
beer.I made a pass at Shell key and didn't
see a single Whaler.
After reading the entire thread I see
everyone met at Bunces pass.
I'm sorry I missed you all.I did see a
small Whaler fishing in Egmont channel,
and also seen a 26foot Outrage trolling
south of Buncess pass.

Big - Glad you made it home. That 88 V4 must be a true hog. Next time may be worth hanging your Boston Whaler banner up.

Roughly 6gph. Had a heavy load but never broke 4k. Maybe on a light load it would do about 4.5gph. Not good enough compared to my Zuki but holeshot sure is impressive.

Talk about a heavy load, that 245 was a white nuckeled ride home if I ever had one, as the weather turned shitty, and we had rain all the way up I-4. A true negative svingter fator a few times, like people couldn't see that big Yellow Fighting Lady:)
But hey, it was worht it!
Take care,
Janis

Ya wanted the boat washed right?
I wish I was able to be there sooner, but the geritol didnt kick in.
It was great to get my baby on the water! Great to see nick and his crew. "did that guy blow chunks on the way home?"
Janis, as usual, it was wonderful to see you and finally get to chat with Draftsman for a while. What A WONDERFUL AND PROUD AND SUPPORTING WIFE YOU ARE! GOOD JOB BABE!
Sweet edgewater!

No chunks......funny thing is that is his nickname. He did however eat my cat treats(pounce) when he got to my house. We went out for a burger at the local bar and he fell asleep at the table. The bartender put an icecube on his neck and he did not even wake up....had a big wetspot on his shirt and a puddle on the table, too funny.

Hey gang let's do the Whaler thing in Stuart at the end of the month. Terry's a great hostess, and a hell of a fisherman. I imagine it will be a blast. She really knows how to "put it on" if ya'll know what I mean. After all, she's the Mkt.ing Director . Regards, Janis
