Last year all at the 2002 Mullet Lake Rendezvous had a great time. Who is interested in a 2003 Mullet Lake Rendezvous?

My family's cottage is available as a site for a gathering & cookout. The open dates are the weekend of August 16th or August 23rd. (Andy, note that we stayed away from your anniversary this time ;-).

Count us in, Don! We really had a terrific time last year and can't wait to do it again. Thank you for offering the use of your cottage as a gathering spot. Either of those weekends will work for us at this point.

Hi Guys:

I'm in again, conditionally. My wife is pregnant with number five this year, and due on August 25, so the earlier weekend (16th) looks better at this point. Can't wait to do it, though.

Congradulations Andy! It sounds like you will need to get a bigger Whaler to fit the entire family!;-)

Given the August 25th due date August 16th might be a little too close. What do people think of having the rendezvous on June 21st? More daylight hours than any other day of the year!

I'm ok any weekend this summer. We aren't going anywhere, needless to say. I think there is another rendezvous for June 21, in Algonac. It's going to be a day-by-day decision for us once we get past the first week of August or so. My wife generally delivers a couple of weeks late, so the 16th would probably work out ok.

Mind if I jump in? I keep my Montauk in Charlevoix and would love to run with a few other boats for a weekend day. We ran the Indian River last fall and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would love to do some more of the chain or a run to Beaver on a clear day. Do you invite new Whaler friends and their families? Please let me know.

The more the merrier. This is all about meeting new people with the common interest of Boston Whaler boats. It would be great if you could come. I spend quite a bit of time boating around Charlevoix during the summer. Perhaps we will run into one another there sometime also. Usually, I will launch at Boyne City or Boyne Falls, boat around the lake, and end up in Charlevoix for ice cream with the kids before heading back.

Thanks Andy. That's a good day on the water. I will stay tuned to this thread and will plan on showing with my family (providing I can tear my wife from one of the many art fairs). Nonetheless, my two daughters will be game for some helm time. Looking forward to the warm weather and meeting new people.

OK everyone. Here it is almost the end of April and it won't be long before the traffic on this site dips as the use of our boats kicks into high gear. So, now is a good time to start a dialog on what we want to do.

Do we head south again and try to make it further than Burt Lake?

Do we want to head north for the big water of Huron?

Do we want to take two days and do both?

I haven't been to Crooked Lake yet, so I'm for heading south, but will go with whatever the group wants to do. It would probably be a good full day starting from the same place as last year.
Ventura16 posted 04-27-2003 08:11 AM ET (US)     Profile for Ventura16  Send Email to Ventura16
I vote for south...I'd like to get all the way to Crooked Lake and back. If we get an early start we should be able to make it.

Seems like a long time until August. Anyone want to do this one a little sooner? The Algonac thread is really quiet; if that one doesn't happen it would open up the June 21 weekend.
djahncke posted 04-29-2003 04:04 PM ET (US)     Profile for djahncke  Send Email to djahncke
My brother is using the cottage for a business retreat the weekend of June 21st, so I am unable to host a cookout then. Actually at this point the cottage is booked up for all of June & July. However there is some flexibility in August.

We have a cottage on the Crooked River and a 23' Conquest. Can my wife and I participate? August 23rd would work the best but the 16th could work as well.

Absolutely Pottsie! The more the merrier. What will probably happen is we will all meet somewhere on Mullet Lake (last year we met just off Aloha State Park) and head off toward Crooked Lake. Then turn around and head to my family's cottage on Silver Beach (Northwestern corner of Mullet) for a cookout. However plans are still open for discussion and all ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Last year we had a few delays and didn't make it all the way to Crooked Lake. This year with a little more organization and hopefully few mechanical problems we intend to make it to Crooked Lake and back.

I think the 16th is a better date since Andy's wife is expecting and the 23rd might be pushing it too close to the due date.

Well, summer is officially here and it is time to start pulling this rendezvous together.

Date: Saturday August 16th

Meeting Place: TBD (I suggest Aloha State Park like we did last year)

Itinerary: Head south down Mullett Lake, through Indian River to Burt Lake, across Burt Lake to the Crooked River, through Crooked River to Crooked Lake. Turn around head back to Mullett Lake the same way. Have an evening cookout at my cottage on Silver Beach (Northwest corner of Mullett Lake).

I'll be up there all day Friday and most of Sunday if anyone wants to do some additional trips. Possibilities include Friday night dinner at some restaurant on the Cheboygan River (The Boat House or Hackmatak come to mind), head out the Cheboygan River to Lake Huron or the Straits of Mackinaw or simply breakfast one morning somewhere along the Cheboygan River.

Count us in Don. We will probably come up Friday after work and be ready to roll bright and early on Saturday. We will be happy to bring additional items for the cookout. Jan will probably make something for desert too.

FYI, I just tried to make reservations at Aloha State Park and they only have a few sites left for SATURDAY arrival with a 2 night stay ($20 per night). There are no sites available for a Friday arrival at all and you aren't allowed to make a 1 night reservation. Saturday arrival means a 3 p.m. check-in (or later), so I guess that means we are coming up Saturday morning...not Friday night. We had the same problem last year. I may still look for a hotel room...any suggestions, Don?

For anyone that is interested here is a link to motels in the Cheboygan area.

The Best Western and the Days Inn both have docks on the Cheboygan River for your boat.

Hi all:

Still planning on coming and looking forward to it!

Crosley, I'm really looking forward to seeing your restoration, as I looked at your boat about a week before you bought it down by Harrington Lake in Kentucky.

Crossing my fingers that all will be stable with my wife - we've scheduled a Dr. appt. on the friday before this event just to make sure . . .

crosley,

You will love Mullett Lake. It's big enough that it doesn't get crowded. You have the 40+ miles of the Inland Waterway to explore. If you tire of that you can go up the Cheboygan River through the lock to Lake Huron. There are several good restaurants on the rivers for lunch or dinner. One thing my kids loved when they were little was to go for a Dairy Queen by boat.

Where on Mullett lake is the house that you are renting?

Crosley ...
I'm not attending this event (I'll be at the Apostle Islands rendezvous this same weekend)...but this spring I was up and did this same route. We stayed at Burt Lake State Park on the south end of Burt Lake (very close to Indian River). If you're looking to camp, this is a nice park too and it's not too bad of a run back from Mullet Lake. Indian River is fun in the evenings..the houses are all lit up really nicely...it's a very nice ride in the evening.

Hope that helps you with your accomodations.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I looked at Burt Lk. State Park on-line and they had basically the same situation as Aloha for that weekend. I did make reservations at Aloha for Saturday and Sunday night. Unfortunately, I had wanted to come up on Friday, but wasn't able to reserve a campsite for Friday night. I'm still looking for another alternative...I may try the hotels Don sugggested.

Crosley, thanks for the bump. You are absolutely right it is time to start nailing this down.

Date: Saturday August 16th

Meeting Place: TBD (I suggest Aloha State Park like we did last year)

So far the following board members have expressed an interest in coming.

Ventura16
Any Holmes
Charleboix
Pottsie
Crosley95

I would like to get a head count for planning purposes. So could people confirm to me that they are coming and how many are in their party? You can either respond on the board or send me an email at whaler@jahncke.us.

Crosley, unfortunately I haven't been able to spend anytime up at the cottage since mid June so I don't have any information how this fish are biting.

Hello,
I'm relatively new to this site (can't believe what I've been missing), I reside in Farmington, Hills, Mi...I own a Montauk 17, unfortunately it is high & dry right now while I have the engine rebuilt. I should be getting it back this week. I've been disappointed that I have not been able to get in on any of the Whaler Rendevous's going on lately. I will be on Vacation in August and although I can't definitly say I'll be there just yet, I'm leaning toward going to the Mullet Lake Rendevous August 16th, that is if there are still openings and you're open for newcomers...It would be a great trip to break my boat back in and to meet some new Whaler friends. I've got a cousin with a place on Burt Lake,, and I've got a place in Lewiston. Will this be a two day event ? or do people arrive spend the day Whalering, spend the night at parks, hotels, etc & then head home ? Let me know if you're still taking newcomers...Home Aside 1 is looking for a good place to hit the water again, Thanks in advance,

Pat Henahan

Hi Pat -

We would be delighted to have you at the 2nd Annual Mullet Lake rendezvous. It is very informal and open to anyone who can make it.

Last year we met on Saturday morning near Aloha State Park (south shore of the lake), spent the day going down the Indian River into Burt Lake (with a stop for lunch in Indian River). Then we turned around and came back to Mullet Lk. and cruised up toward Cheboygan, then finally had a great cookout at Don Jahncke's cottage on the north shore. After that, we scattered for the night and everyone headed home on Sunday.

I'm sure this year will be similar, but we are going to try to get an earlier start and make it all the way to Crooked Lake and back on Saturday. Don has again volunteered to host a cookout Saturday night, and I'm sure some of us will be up for more boating on Sunday if you are interested.

Last year we had 4 boats (plus Don's 2 made a total of 6)...we are certainly hoping for more this year. Let me know if you have any other questions...we'd love to see you up there. Also, we are neighbors...I live in West Bloomfield and so does Don Jahncke.

Tom,
Thanks for the reply, I'll keep you posted as to wether I'll be able to make Mullet Lake, it sounds great. I was thinking of bringing my 11 year old son, Don't know if you want children in the mix or not, let me know. He just finished 5th grade and he's heading to middle school, I've been thinking of a Dad & Son short trip to celebrate his accomplishment if Kid's are OK.....He loves to go boating...but if Children aren't just let me know & I'll plan something else for him & Me at another time.....

Pat,

By all means bring your son. My son (was 13 at the time) and his friend had a great time last year getting rides in the different Whalers. If he likes to ride in boats this is a great trip for him.

Don-

Right now it looks strongly like I'll be coming up with Outre' for the Rendezvous - Katie has accepted an invitation from one of her teacher friends to take a class they've been talking about that weekend (non-boating = less stress with her new hip) - so unless I open up a project on the boat that I can't close in time I hope to make it. I'll keep you posted via e-mail.

Don and the rest of you guys -

I was hoping that the situation for next weekend would change, but it looks like I have to bail out on the rendezvous.

I have the triple whammy going: my wife has been asked to work unexpectedly on Saturday, my sister has decided to come visit next weekend from southern Illinois, and the Airstream trailer that I've had for sale all summer has finally sold and the out-of-state buyer wants to come get it next weekend! AARRRGGGGHHHHH!

I hope the weather is perfect and you all have a great time. I will be with you all in spirit(s)...have a cold one for me.

hi all,

hate to add to the bailouts.... but, the timing is not going to work for me. i have my rental on mullet starting tomorrow the 9th and have to checkout on the 16th. my hope was that the cottage would be available for a couple of extra days. not the case. if anyone is up there early, i'll have the 65 sakonnet with a lot of nice mahogany and a navy blue bimini. have a great time everybody.

Tom,

Sorry to hear the news. One or two of those and you could still be in the game. But, I guess it is three strikes and you are out.

For the rest of the group I propse that we meet at 9:00 at Aloha State Park. From there we will start our cruise to Crooked Lake and back. We will finish up with a cookout at my cottage on the north end of Mullett Lake.

Please email me ( whaler@jahncke.us ) how many are in your party and the type of boat you have. That way I will know who to look out for and how many to plan for the cookout.

If you have any questions please email me or post them.

I look forward to hearing from all of you and I am really looking forward to this Rendezvous.

Hi All:

I still plan to attend. Boat (17' Standard) is going in the shop today, Aug. 9th, for rough idle. Supposed to be ready by mid-week. Pregnancy is going well, so keep your fingers crossed. We'll have two in attendence, myself and my 14 year old daughter. Looking forward to it!
