Can anyone tell me about the fishing in the Chatam area and Monomoy Flats? I am planning a trip there at the end of August. I was wondering if the waters are too big for a 17' Montauk. I am used to fishing inland bays and rivers.
Thanks

Lots of Montauks fishing that area. The inlet can be pretty treacherous though. Pleasant bay is a good alternative for Stripers if the inlet looks bad. The West side of Monomoy can be accessed without running the inlet if you can launch from Harwich or Yarmouth. I'm not sure where the ramps are in that area though.

Some of the best striper fishing on the Cape is found on the back side of Monomoy. The closest launch would be Stage Harbor. Great flycasting on the flats, but watch your depth and tides because there is a lot of very skinny water. Your Montauk will do just fine. Go early for the best wind conditions. It usually starts to blow by 1 pm. Fishing The Cape is a good shop in Harwich for local info.

Good ocean striper fishing is often found straight out of the Chatham cut, in about 40 feet of water. Look for the submerged sandbars with your sounder, and fish sand eel patterns off the bottom with a fast retrieve. This inlet can be mild or hairy, so check conditions and make sure you stay in the channel. On many days it was no problem even in a 13 sport, but many days I'd hessitate with my 22 as well.
