I'll be heading with inlaws to the Beaufort, North Carolina area in about a month. We've taken our 15' Striper before in the Bogue Island/Cape Lookout area, mainly staying in the sound but also fishing the inlets, never really getting out in the ocean. Cape Lookout is so beautiful and "out there" feeling, it got me thinking about heading up the coast for more.

I'm thinking about going up the sound to Ocracoke, leaving from Beaufort. It appears that there is either deep water or a marked channel all the way up the sound. It looks like a beautiful, largely empty area. We've only been as far as the end of Harker's Island up that way before heading south to the Cape.

Has anyone here done this before? Was the channel (where needed) marked ok? Any particular concerns or cautions about the trip up? If we do it, we'd likely head out at first light and try to get back by early afternoon to avoid the afternoon winds and potential storms. At a typical cruise of around 30 mph, I expect it would take 1.5-2 hours each way.

Thanks.
