How about another get together? I've missed the last few, so I'm hurting for an excuse to get out on the water with some good people. Can't wait for Ryan to come down, so let's dream something up. The Suwanee River is still available....

Like I said, don't wait for me to come down.

I don't think I'll have any free time to hang out with you guys this upcoming trip and if my highschool hockey team is in the playdowns that week I'm gonna stay home.

As much as I'd like it, I don't think its gonna happen. We have family in FL and I'll be down to see them time in the near future.

Its nreal how many of you get together down there, I wish we could pull an outcome like that up here!

As long as you old people who go Florida to die stay around for a little while longer I'll come around. ;-)

Ryan Tisk Tisk We don't go to Fla. to die, we go there to LIVE. You just don't understand that we worked to enjoy our senior moments. You have a long way to go to enjoy that.Lou

Hey Frank...

Took the 130 to the Suwannee [Fanning Springs] yesterday. Wanted to introduce a new rod/reel to the local fish population. :)

Got a little windy in the afternoon but the 80+° temps made up for it.

Later...

Was contemplating a trip to Mac Rae's in Homasassa soon. Janis also mentioned the St John's river as well.

either one's fine with me,

I'm on the cotee' river, leads out to the gulf in the port richey area
real nice river, best hooters in the country, right on the water, might be a good choice in the future.
Ryan, some of us here in FL are smart, came down after college
problem is where am I gonna go when I retire?:-)

Stefan,

I seen a couple of places for sale on the Cotee river.
The place I seen said 30 minutes Idle speed to the Gulf.
I wonder how far up that river to the low clearance bridges?

I went to that seafood festival last year right
on the Cotee River. They had a small boat show set
up around that lake.

I also looked farther north at Hudson beach.
Cotee river seemed alot more protected than Hudson.

I was out on the Gulf on Saturday. About 75' and flat as glass. Did a quick dive in 57' water to look for some grouper but came up empty handed. Still turned out to be a great day for a boat ride. Beats sweeping the snow off the boat in the backyard anytime. Jarhead, glad to hear you out chasing fish on the Suwannee. Ought to try the Santa Fe sometime for Bass. I'll show you the way around.

Santa Fe Bass... Sounds like a plan. :)

I'm gearing up for a Slammer tournament next week [inshore Gulf- Redfish, Trout, Black Drum] but would like to give the Bass a bad time up your way soon.

I'll give you a shout and we'll work out the details...

ed,

depends where the house is, there's only one low level bridge (U.S. 19) I have to go thru, right before hooters. but further south there's 3 I think S of the main st boat ramp

Anything else to do on the Cotee besides Hooters? Hotels? Never been there, might be fun. My friend lives in Holiday, he'll have no excuse this time.
stefan posted 01-07-2004 03:40 PM ET (US)     Profile for stefan  Send Email to stefan
besides hooters, there's the crab shack, better food, live music, dock space a little tight though, also Catches, big restaurant, food's not that hot, but nice tiki bar.
most of the boaters head out to the sand bar for the day (anclote) then on way home hit a few bars.
no hotels right on the water w/ docks that I know of, plenty a few blocks off though (US 19)

I like the homosassa idea.

Homo is great being fresh water and Manatees to swim with. Hotels are pretty cheap at about $75/night. Let's do it! Who is in? When?

I'm in, what about Crystal River? Isn't that just north of Hommosassa?
Hotels are really cheep, Days Inn was just $55.00/night for labor day weekend. Somebody warm up down here, and pick a date. FNo, you started this, pick a date.:)

When are we going?
Went off shore New Years day and got beat to hell on the ride in (not in a Whaler!) and ran the Dauntless up the St. John's Sunday from Lake Monroe to Hontoon and back.
Would love to get together soon with everyone, pick a date and place- we can drive to either coast or wherever.
Gotta finish installing new vhf- got a Ray53 radio the other night and have to hook up to gps for dsc to work.

Chris

BTW Janis- You know Tim Rush or his daughter? talked to him at work and supposed to be getting a Montauk soon?

Homassasa is OK but done a bunch of it. Its still a fun place, not opposed to it, but I am interested in the Swanee cause I have been there.
Share some reasons to go there, hotels, ramps, eateries..
Bigshot posted 01-08-2004 09:42 AM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Crystal river is good and bigger but not as fun as Homo. MacRae's is like $75 AFTER tax, so probably like $65 night. I stayed at a cool place in Crystal river, right on the water with their own ramp and restaurant/bar. Was pretty cheap but not the Hyatt if ya know what I mean. They also rent boats there so would not be hard to find again. Suwanne sounds great but Too far for me and wife with her back.....no biggie, I can catch up with ya'll the next time.

What about the Cotee river by Stefan?

What about a nice big lake in Lakeland or somewhere? We can find some remote place and take it over ;)

stefan posted 01-08-2004 10:09 AM ET (US)     Profile for stefan  Send Email to stefan
let's do the homosas, I like idea of hotel right on water w/ docks, something we don't have on the cotee
my neighbors on each side, don't have boats at their docks
if we ever were to do cotee, I could probably get them to let ya 'all use 'em for a case of beer
stefan posted 01-08-2004 10:14 AM ET (US)     Profile for stefan  Send Email to stefan
bigshot,
I think I 've been to that hotel/resturant/bar in crystal river you're talking about, big, huge, old white gig, been there forever,
real fun tiki bar and pool right next to their dock set up

sound familiar?

How about first week in March or is that too late? I know it seems far away but it will be here in a blink of an eye.

We have the Gasparilla on 2/7 and superbowl Sunday coming up, then Valentines day, etc. January might be too cold, last year we tried one and damn near got snowed out.

Bigshot posted 01-08-2004 02:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Pat(swellmonster) also suggested one on the manatee river by my house. We have a few CHEAP hotels and about 4 waterfront bars/restaurants and some great boating to be had. If you go East up the river it looks like you are going into a Bayou and is all fresh water and natural....more animals than people. If you go west you are in the Gulf in under 10 miles and have Eggmont key, Passage key(nude), and many other blue water/sandy beached destinations for snorkeling, etc. I have 120' of protected dock and all my neighbors have docks as well so parking overnight is NO BIGGIE!

Hey Everyone,
My wife (Amber) and I have been talking about going somewhere. She was sad she missed Kice Island. We first thought of just taking the kayaks up to Homasassa Springs sometime soon, but if there is a Rendezvous we will bring the Whaler. Amber is about 5 months preganant now and said we need to do something soon.
Just waiting for a loaction/date...

Count us in wherever it is. Like last year at that time, it gets a little windy in March & April so protected waters would probably make it more confortable. Don't want any Whaler premees!!!

Ok.....I have 4 rooms reserved at MacRae's in Homosassa for saturday March 6th. Check-in is 3pm so we should meet say 10-11am and go hit the river for the day, then check-in when we return. The rooms are on MY credit card so I need to know who is in and who is not so you can reserve and pay for your own room or I can cancel the ones we don't need. I am giving this till monday or I am cancelling them. Please let me know so I can give you their number, etc. There is a 48 hour cancellation allowance so EVEN if you want to go but are not 100%, you have plenty of time to cancel.
Bigshot posted 01-13-2004 03:48 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
They are $75/night so with tax is like $81.75. Only one night so not gonna break the bank! Boat and trailer parking along with boat ramp at hotel so don't fret. Coldest beer on the river for $1 at Tiki bar. They also have a tackle store and rent boats as well. Maybe we should leave our boats home and just rent a pontoon? NAH!

Smitty is riding with me so my boat is full or can take 1 more for those who want to go boatless. If it is a far run for you(like Smitty from Lauderdale), no need to bring your boat, we'll accomadate you if single or a couple. Bring da family....ya'll be rentin a pontoon;)

Hi all. I cannot commit to that date for a full day. I may however, join you for a few oysters, crab and beer at the bar to get to know the crew here in Florida. Wade (Smirkless) and I will be riding together for the Gasparilla so maybe we will see some of you there.

Please post your itinerary when it gets closer and the wife and I will stop by. They do have oysters at this place, right Nick?

Chris: We live right near the entrance to the Wekiva Springs State Park. A great place because I have 5 golf courses within 3 miles of me (and no tourists).

Bigshot posted 01-16-2004 11:27 AM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Dave they have Oysters and blue crab too. The Manatee is especially tastee along with monkey.

No itinerary so to speak. We are meeting at say 10-11am and launching our boats. Cruise around then hit the springs and swim. Come back about 4pm to check-in and make dinner arrangements. To swing all the way there for a couple beers is a tad extreme. Most of us will be at Gasparilla.

We're in for the weekend. I didn't get the place that I wanted but have a palce lined up none the less. I will get more details out soon. Looks like a good place to hang out in the evening and party though. I know it has a dock too. What can I bring besides that two year old loaf of Italian bread for Nick. I will try to get the latest info on the Manatees as my friends own and operate Bird's Underwater on Crystal River and do the tours throughout the winter and know it like the back of their hands. Usually the best time to swim with the sea pigs is early in the morning, but I'm sure we'll find some late risers in the river.

Nick - This is the 4th or 5th time you've said that. It has to look a lot better than it did when it left Middleburg, Florida.

By the way- Mc Rae's said the still had 1 more standard room. I'm all for the discount though.

Bigshot posted 01-22-2004 04:01 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
I have to do the wood on the console, install some backrest cushions, re-pinstripe under the windshield, put down the cooler supports, install the Pate 27, and buff and wax the interior....pretty close to done. The rubrail has also stretched a bit so I have to recut and screw down again at the stern. I still have not made the front windscreen yet but I will someday(have a broken one for a mold from another member here). Should be able to get most of it done by 3/6.

MacRae's is kinda unique in that they charge ONE fee no matter WHEN during the year. So 4th of July is the same as MLK or March 6th....no blackout dates anotherwords. I doubt they will discount but it can't hurt to ask. If anyone else is reserving a room, ask if there is a discount being we are taking over their hotel for the night ;)

Hello to all those we met at Kice (and those I didn't too). We just saw the thread. Just got back from "Cold" orado, been off line for awhile . . .

Sounds as if Hotel is full. Questions:

Are there any RV parks nearby?
Can old people like us come?
Do I have to wash my Montauk?
Does the bear shit in the woods?

Grease your hitch and get it in gear Dave. Yes, bears do shit in the woods, by the way, that's a great opportunity to shoot them, when they aren't thinking about eating you. Should I bring the water skis? I hear Nick can jump Manatees on one ski.

This info is two years old so hope is still correct. DON't use their boat ramp as they charge. Use the one next to McRae's as it is county and free. Public parking is a block away. Get your boat in early to avoid a wait. Plenty of Motels on US 19.

Call to see if they still have a room? I know they have efficiencies but you need to rent them both friday and saturday. Check Expedia or mapquest for other hotelsnearby, there are plenty. There has to be RV as well being in the sticks a tad

Bill C.....ya coming?

Hey there Big. What's happening? Gonna try to make this one. Been busy spending money like a fool on Friday night restoring a house for resale. Would be able to buy a nice Whaler for 25K. If I can make will be there Friday and park the boat at my friends dock for a couple days. There is a campground in the area. Will try to get the name and location.

Here is what my Homosassa friends consider the best camp ground and it's on the river with a boat ramp. They charge for it's use. Camp-N-Water, 11465 N. Priest Lane, Homosassa,

Could someone post a map to the boat ramp where all will launch? Also, is there a vhf channel that you guys monitor in case one were trying to locate you on the river?

Ramp is basically at Mac Rae's so if you can find them, you can find us. I will have a handheld on 68 as well. E-mail me for my cell # if ya want. She is a busy ramp so let's get there early and be organized for a quick launch. Good thing is 2 boats can launch at the same time.

Are we going to cook this time or eat out? Don't forget tobring mask, fins,& snorkel if you want to swim with the sea pigs. A thin wetsuit is good if you have one, but not necesary.

Where would we cook? Not exactly beaches on the river. Maybe we can storm someone's house and take their BBQ hostage?

We might be able to do a dinner cooking thing being some have the kitchenette's to heat stuff up in. I will call and see if they allow BBQ's or have one for us to use. For lunch I think any of the many restaurant's are fine or we can bring a picnic basket with us. My concern is trying to park 6-10 boats at a restaurant on a saturday afternoon, not easy to do unless in Ft Lauderdale.

As for parking allthose boats at a restaurant, there Whalers, and we will give a whole new meaning to the phrase"car pool", ..."Boat pool":) Looks like we have porches if we want to cook, but I know this chic ain't gonna cook on the beach even again since what happened to the beautiful porterhouse at Kice Island. I'm in for some blue crabs myself, and have a big pot just for them if we catch em', but would rather have someone cook them for me.and feed me grapes and fan me with palm fawns;)

Just changed the Email address. It was my old one from Italy. Sounds like there have been a few BBQ accidents in the past. Couldn't have been Tequila related. This may be the biggest one yet!!!! Swell, don't worry. I'll have a cold one waiting for you in the a.m. Who's bringing the 12 volt blender?

Bigshot, et al,

Joyce and I are in as well. Just made the hotel reservations yesterday at McRae's for both Friday and Saturday night.

Now a few logistics questions:
1) Is there boat trailer parking at the hotel?
2) How steep is the launch ramp? We don't have keel rollers yet, and the Temptation is kinda hard to get off the trailer if it is full of gas, unless the ramp is pretty steep.
3) Can we follow somebody for the cruising? I haven't had a chance to install the depth finder, new radio, or chartplotter.
4) Is anybody coming in Friday night at McRae's? Can we meet up?
5) Nick, could you please send me your cell phone number?
6) What have we decided to do about lunch on Saturday - picnic basket or restaurant, or what?

We are looking forward to seeing everyone and matching faces to names. We are excited about coming, and I have already printed out the directions from MapQuest -- 374 miles from Charleston!!

Whalerace - My wife Terreca, and I will be there on Friday as well. Our schedules have not allowed us to attend one of these prior to this so we're really looking forward to this one. We're anxious to meet all of you.

As a suggestion for dinner Saturday night. With so many of us there its kind of an event- a happening where we could sit around, visit and meet one another. Its hard to do that in a restaurant. How about doing a low country boil outside there at the motel? We would simply find the Old Bay can, some shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, onions and whatever else we might like. Put it in a cooker with a can or two of beer, throw it out on the table and dig it. You need some butter and some pepper, a beer flat to use as a plate and start eating.

How does that sound? We'd need 3 or 4 of the cookers for this large of a group. What do you think?

Team - If the vote is to do a community crab boil, I have two cookers I could bring...

Janis - do you really want to be wafted with juvenile deer? Your stature as Whaler Queen requires the of palm fronds...:-)

Jimh....March 5th-7th.

Ace....I still don't believe you are coming:) Ramp is good for your rig and they have trailer parking at hotel. Might even be able to get a free slip overnight if available. With this many boats, we might have to pull a few. I will have no problem with that for my rig. Bring a lunch just in case. Yes you can follow me. # is 941-545-3808.

Cook-off/boil, etc sounds good to me.

Had nothing to do this cold, rainy saturday so we drove out to MacRaes! The mapquest directions get you to homosassa but then suck the last mile or so. Glad we made a dry run without boat in tow, got circled around some little neighborhood 3x. Pretty easy if you follow the signs and not the map. Ramp looks nice and parking on site and large lot behind motel for trailer parking (county lot I guess). When we made reservations I was told we can dock boats in front of tiki bar overnight and seemed to be a lot of room.
Boil sounds great, get a list and everyone bring something.
If anyone is coming from Orlando or east/south maybe we can meet - Turkey Lake service plaza on the FL Turnpike in Orlando may be an idea. Hope to see everyone soon!

I will try to get a better map from my friends in Crystal River. They have a dive shop and should have maps or an online link. I'm going to start another thread just for participants to sign in as a definite or maybe so we don't have to go thru 100 posts.
