Since I just spent the last few days working down at the Auto Show, it got me thinking that it is almost Boat Show time. The Boat Show is at Cobo from 2/7 thru 2/15.

Is there any interest in putting together a Whaler rendezvous for the show? We've managed to get small groups together the last couple of years...maybe this year we can get a larger bunch.

Count me in.....I have a friend who runs the security at the Detroit Boat Show....I might be able to requistion some complimentary tickets for the group. I'll inquire and try and keep count of who's interested. Maybe go to the boat show and then have a board meeting at one of the local establishments. my only hitch is that I will be gone for a week in February while the kids are out of school, so it would be better for me earlier during the shows run...so far I count four...

I just looked at my schedule and I won't be going out of town until Feb 15th so I should be able to go most any time...

I'm glad there's interest in a get-together.

In previous years, we've gone on a weeknight...like a Tuesday or Wednesday. We've met for dinner (burgers/beer) at 6 or so at one of the local joints, and then headed over to Cobo. My schedule is pretty flexible. Passes would be great if possible...thanks for checking on them, Pat.

If a week day evening is best for you guys, I'll have to catch up with you another time - 130 mi. drive for me. Still interested if it comes together on one of the weekends...(earlier in the day?)

It seems like there are a lot of guys who can be available most any day and only Kingfish who can't go on weekdays...So how about we go on a weekend so Kingfish can make it.....Does the first day of the show Feb 7th sound ok...if we go ahead and choose a date asap we can move on with the plans and newcomers will know when coming in what the date is....let me know if Feb 7th works for all and I'll track down my buddy regarding passes....

Saturday the 7th is fine by me - and I appreciate your efforts to allow the tail to wag the dog; I'm looking forward to meeting you guys. (And seeing Don Jahncke again; we've met a couple of times already.)

Well I just got home from a 12 hour shift (11P-11A...I sent my earlier post from work) to find out I'm a victim of Murphy's Law....After suggesting the Feb 7th date I found out when I got home that my wife had made some irreversible plans for that evening....I can still make it during the day on that date but would have to plan on being home around 6PM....so If it's ok with the rest of the crew to do it in the early afternoonFeb 7th it's fine by me....let me know what you think....I too am looking forward to meeting you all at the boat show as well as at some in the water rendezvous this summer

Earlier the better for me - I'm an early riser. What time does it open? (Might beat the crowds, if they are an issue, and have lunch during or after?)

I just looked on the boat show website. It opens at noon, so I don't think Kingfish will need to get a real early start. Unless people want to get an early lunch before the show?

Another thought....as far as keeping count I didn't take into consideration if anyone might want to bring wives, family members, etc So if it is a possibility let me know for the count so when I try and hit my friend up for passes I'll have a count....thanks

John,
I know you have a bit of a drive for the show on 2-7-04, and the show opens at Noon....I also have plans locked in for around 7PM that evening (if I ever want a free Whalering moment the rest of my life) So I'm going to say if we planned on meeting for an early lunch around 11:00am, figure an hour or so for lunch (I worked out of Police HQ for 19 years so I know of a few Restaurants and donut shops in the area), then to the show for several hours, I can still get to my engagement in time, and you can still have time to head home at a reasonable hour if that's what you plan to do...Let me know if you're coming Solo or with someone so I can get enough passes...hopefully....

Pat-

Your plan sounds great to me, and I'm coming solo (if you don't count the thermos of coffee). Hope the weather is better than it was today...

Let me know what spot is the right one to meet for lunch, and some general directions to it. I'll be there...

Cicada / Paul.

Glad to have you aboard.....it should be fun...count as it stands now is:

Ventura16 / Tom
djahnke / Don
kingfish / John
Home Aside / Pat
Cicada / Paul

Since I for one would like to spend as much time as possible at the boat show and I have to be home by 5:45PM - 6:00PM, I'd like to suggest we go into the show as early as possible. The show opens at 12:00 NOON. I suggest maybe a beer and something to eat before the show, maybe around 11:00AM,
As I said I know of many places for Burgers / Coneys / beer type dining. I'm a Coney Kind of guy, but let me know what your poison is and I'll locate a place that's convenient and won't damage the wallets too bad.
I was also thinking about parking. I was thinking of a place we could park for free and then all of us pile into one car/truck and drive to Cobo and only pay to park one Vehicle....I'm not trying to sound cheap... but parking fee's can get out of hand at special events...and I'd rather spend the money on Boating related items....let me know what you think.

Pat

kingfish posted 01-27-2004 03:04 PM ET (US)     Profile for kingfish  Send Email to kingfish
Burgers *or* coneys work for me (unless it's a *real good* coney - then I'd just have to have one or two). But I'm in for whatever...

I'm ambivalent about free parking; I'm used to paying the freight for the Detroit Car Show, and as I think about it, I may want to drive seperately to the close lot anyway in case my Viox wears out and my knees tell me I've got to get off my feet, while you guys are still going strong.

I'm looking forward to it; keep us posted-

Hey Guys...
I've been busy lately with out of town guests and my wifes birthday and my son's (he was my wifes birthday present 12 years ago).....anyway I'm still planning on going on Feb 7th... things haven't changed for me since the last post and the count which was five. I live in Farmington Hills and am willing to ride share, caravan, etc, I was going to suggest Lafayette Coney Island for Lunch around 11:00am, It's at Michigan Ave & Lafayette downtown, but I'm game for anywhere. As I said I'd like to get started early because I have to be home around 5:30PM -6:00PM. For the guys coming from out of town if you want to meet on the outskirts and then caravan the rest of the way downtown let me know where you're coming from and I'll try and think of a meeting place....also my phone number is Home 248-538-0275...Cell 248-892-8580....email Homeaside@aol.com....

Kingfish....
I think you might be the only out of towner...so let me know where you're coming from (I'm at work and computer won't let me access your profile) I live in general area of I-696 & I-275.....if you plan an arrival time in that area around 10:00am it gives us an hour to get everyone together and drive downtown.....also I know it doesn't matter cost wise but my friend who runs security said we can enter through his office, leave our coats there and then enter the show from there and forego admission if we'd like. talk to you soon

Have a great time down there. Unfortunately, I've got another long standing activity:

The March of Dimes is having the annual Jail and Bail event that day. It's the 48th annual Jail and Bail event, which started right in the local county jail. We hope to raise over $180,000 which is the largest single day fundraiser in the MOD organization.

Funds raised by the MOD go towards research in the nationwide premature birth problem, a problem that is growing and there is a great need for research in that area. More than likely, you know someone within your range of friends who have had a premature birth situation.

I'm, along with one of my old parters (who is now the county sheriff) and a long time 30year MOD member are the event co-chairman.

Best - Don

Hello All...
Sorry you won't be able to join us Don (dfmcintyre)but good luck with your fundraiser...as I posted a few days ago it looks like we have five for the boat show Saturday Feb 7, 2004. I believe Kingfish/john is the only out of towner, and basically Ventura16/Tom, djahnke/Don, Cicada/Paul, and me, home Aside/Pat are all from the W. Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Birmingham area. That makes five of us. I sent jimh an email to see if he could join us but he's opting for the Miami Boat Show....maybe next time....

anyway I'm open for a ride share downtown for those of us locally do we want to meet at someones house and also have Kingfish meet us and he can caravan down with us so he has his wheels available....is Lafayette Coney Island OK for lunch at 11:00am and then to the show around noon....let me know I'll also try to send e-mails to all of you...I look forward to hearing from you as well as meeting you in person...

Pat-

It all sounds good to me-

I'll be coming Eastbound on I-94 from Battle Creek; if you'd email me some rudimentary directions and a cell number (in case I get lost or wind up running late for some reason), I'd be grateful. I'll reply with my cell #.

Sorry to go dark on everyone, I've been in Portland for the last week.

I agree, all us suburban folks should meet up and go down together. We can meet John somewhere along I-94...maybe near the airport...and caravan downtown from there.

I can drive if you like...I have a large vehicle. I live north of Don and Pat, so I can just come down Haggerty (or M5) and meet you somewhere. It's up to Paul whether he wants to drive out and meet us or just meet up downtown.

Or, as an alternative, we could all meet at my office in downtown Royal Oak...plenty of free parking...and head down from there.

As far as food goes, much as I love Lafayette coneys, I'm trying to eat healthier. Personally, I'd prefer a place with more variety on the menu. My buddy owns the brand-new Detroit Beer Co....on Broadway behind the Opera House near Comerica Park. That would be a great place for burgers/beer as well as salads, etc. Here's a map: http://www.bcell.com/tom/detroitbeerco.jpg .

Let me know what you think about these ideas.

I don't know about you guys, but I am way ready to spend some time doing something that lets me think about warmer weather and boating; I am really looking forward to it.

This one is for Ventura16, djahnke, Cicada,

Earlier today I went ahead and sent Kingfish directions to meet me ( us if we share ride) at Orchard Lake and 12 Mile, Einsteins Bagel or Starbucks (N/W Corner) he's familiar with the area.. So I think it would be best now to stay with that plan if it's ok with everyone. He'll meet us at 10:00am give or take a couple. The Detroit Beer Company sounds as good as anything for me....I've been accused of having a mouth that looks like a funnell and a stomach like a garbage disposal so I'm good for just about anything.....I'm just waiting for the latest reply from Don & Paul and I think we're good to go....my Cell & home numbers are posted earlier. I'll probably post one last time Friday 2-6-04 to confirm everyone one last time....talk to you soon. Bring a snapshot of you're Whaler....

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at Orchard Lk. and 12 Mile in the morning!

One small snag: I callled the Detroit Beer Co. and they don't open until 11:30. I guess we can have some coffee at Starbucks and chat for an hour before heading downtown.

I'll be there-

Pat and I have exchanged vehicle descriptions and cell phone #'s to make it easier to hook up.

I had myself charged up for a Coney before the Detroit Beer Company option developed - hows about we go back to plan B for Coneys once we meet at Orchard Lake and 12 mile?

John

Ventura16 posted 02-06-2004 09:32 PM ET (US)     Profile for Ventura16  Send Email to Ventura16
Well, coneys would be ok, but it seems like we are going to end up waiting at one end or the other. It's only a 20-30 minute drive downtown and you'll have a hard time stretching lunch at Lafayette Coney to much more than 30 minutes.

I guess I'd prefer to sit and talk over coffee, head down to the Beer Co. at 11:00 for lunch and be over at the show by 12:15 or so.

Just my opinion...I'll go along with the majority. BTW, I drive a gold Chevy Avalanche and my cell is 248-980-6382.

Reporting in safe and sound, as promised, after a great day at the Detroit Boat show.

It was a true pleasure making some new Whaler friends today (Paul, Tom, Pat [and Gregg, a G-W type, but that's all right]), seeing Don again, and just having fun yakking about our boats and experiences as we walked around. Great sport, and fun looking at the Hinkley and Cabo (and the Azimuts, as goofy looking as they are...).

Many thanks to all of you Greater Detroit types for your generous hospitality; it was a super day and I hope we can get together again soon. And, a high recommendation for those who may find themselves in downtown Detroit looking for a great sandwich and refreshments in a comfortable and well tended atmosphere: be sure to try the Detroit Beer Company.

Spring seems a whole lot closer to me now having had the boating fix I just did...

John, Pat, Paul and Don...thanks for a GREAT day! It was truly a wonderful time...good conversation, lot's of laughs, great food, and of course...boats, boats, boats.

I really enjoyed meeting all of you...and renewing my friendship with Don. I'm sure that we will all spend many more good times together Whalering.

I hope that all you local guys will join me at my home this summer for a BBQ and some inland Whaler fun.

And John, your beautiful boat has inspired me to resume my search for the perfect Outrage. I'll be needing it for the next North Channel Rendezvous.

See you all soon,

John, Tom, Pat, Don and Gregg (even though he's a Grady White guy).

Just got back from East Tawas. Lake Huron is as calm as a sheet of ice.

Just wanted to say thanks for the great time. Couldn't think of a better way to spend a cold winter day. Real nice to have some faces and personalities with the names. Look forward to seeing you all again. The BBQ sounds great.
