Ace & Joyce are in for the weekend. We will be leaving Charleston on Friday morning, heading down I-95, I-295, I-10, US-301, etc. Hope to arrive around 1800 at McRae's. My cell phone is (843) 817-5334, Joyce's is (843) 270-9824 [listed both because we get varying coverage down the East Coast]. Staying Friday and Saturday night at McRae's, then Sunday and Monday somewhere in Tampa.

Hopefully someone will call us for a more definite launch time on Saturday morning.

What do we need to bring for the Boil Saturday night?

WhalerAce,

Whatever you do, don't speed while going down U.S. 301. Especially in the cities of Starke, Waldo, Lawtey etc... Be carefull in Starke because the speed limit changes from 55 to 45 to 30. Real fast! The signs are obscured with power poles that are right next to the road. Just a public service message from phatwhaler.

phatwhaler out.

ps: Sorry this statement has nothing to do with Boston Whalers.

PhatWhaler,

Thanks much for the heads up. It does have something to do with Whalers because there will be one in tow.

I don't go too fast anyhow, I'm getting old.

Terreca and I will be coming down on Friday morning, expect to arrive by noon or so. We'll be staying at MacRae's. Bringing the Montauk this trip. We can be reached on my cell phone which is 904.234.4444.

Looks like several are agreeable to the "boil" for Saturday night. We'll be bringing one cooker.

Looking forward to it.

FYI....for those who have multiple boats or just a smaller one....this is the trip for the small boat. Most of the river is slow speed no wake and the gulf is still 4' deep 20 miles out....strange area for boating. I doubt we will even go outside the mouth so a 11 or 13 wil be plenty. If I had a smaller Whaler than my 17' I would bring it. Unfortunately my only small boat is a 1967 Wellcraft 13" w a 9.9 Yamaha. Not the most stable rig in the world.....wife don't dig it. I also think for anyone who does not want to trailer should rent an alum jon boat from Mac Rae's for a few Bucks and join us....or mooch a ride from the many who are coming.

If I did not have a 17' I would be renting or mooching because I friggin hate towing anything larger more than a few miles.....I'm just like that.....OK?

In a nut shell....Janis bring the 13' and BillC being your 15.

Bigshot,

Now I gotta worry. Is the Temptation too big for what we are doing? Still planning on coming, but should I bring a [gasp] non-Whaler?

Bigshot posted 02-05-2004 12:11 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Ace....not too big at all. Just wanted to stress that it is a great rendezvous for those with smaller boats unlike Kice island, etc where we were out in the Gulf in some nasty shizit. River is plenty deep and marked well. I just hate towing so "if" I had a 11 or 13, etc I would be dragging that behind my Caddy. Swell is bringing his 20' like usual.

Team - Checking on prices here (Melbourne area) reveals that blue crabs are running about $2.00 / lb (2 to 3 crabs per pound). At 8 to 10 per person, we are looking at 6 to 8 dollars per person. I'd be willing to purchase and transport if I could get a commitment to the number of people and willingness to reimburse. I also have a couple of boil pots / cookers I'd be willing to bring...

Since my wife and I were the ones who originally suggested this type of dinner - let me clear it up some. We called the meal a low country boil.

The ingredients:

Shrimp
Crab legs
Sausage
potatoes
onions
corn on the cob (in 2-3 inch pieces)
Old Bay Spice
a can or two of beer
water

if Blue Crabs are desired that can be added as well.

The water/beer/Old Bay is brought to a boil, the vegatables are thrown in, they take about 10-15 minutes total, 10 minutes into cooking the veggies - throw in the sausage, after another minute or two throw in the shrimp and crab legs. Give them about 3 minutes and the pour the entire batch( strained of course) out on the table and dig in. You need a stick of butter and some coctail sauce and you are good to go. Easy as that.

If we want to include blue crabs we can do that as well. I'd have to ask another member to tell me how long to cook them - I'm just not sure.

Does this sound like something we'd all like to do?

donel posted 02-12-2004 11:57 AM ET (US)     Profile for donel  Send Email to donel
Blue crabs also are in the boiling pot ( vat ) for 15 - 20 minutes.
This will take several big pots and many newspapers laid out. Hammers & pliers & forks. ( Safety glasses )
It's a big, sloppy great fun meal. Much cold beer needed.

McRaes may be able to line up a local crab supply for the occasion; and some cooking utensils as they are known to be partiers themselves.
I can't tow a whaler to there but hope to arrive for meet and eat. Will bring what is called for as the organizing progresses.
Don

I used to catch blue crab for a living(20+ years ago) so I know how to cook a crab. Al can you bring say 3 dozen crabs(big as possible)? That should be plenty and keep the tab under $40 or so. I am good for 2-3 max. Too much of a pain to eat more. If other food is available 3 doz should be plenty(especially if 6" or larger). I am low on Old-Bay but will pick up some and bring my crab pot.

Ticket to crabs is steam until red....then 10 minutes and remove. Use the same for Lobster maybe 15 mins if a big lobster. NEVER boil either unless you want a watery mushy crustacean.

Bigshot posted 02-12-2004 02:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Al....this might have to be done locally being they have to be cooked alive which means only a few hours old. Bag the crabs, I will try and get in Homo.

OK - sounds as if we're on for this cookout. Terreca and I will bring one cooker, propane, the fixins for 5 or 6 people and a bunch of Old Bay, coarse ground pepper and tubs of butter. I'd rather have too much than not enough.
... and 2 or 3 jugs of wine

If everyone who is participating would advise what they're bringing we can probably get this deal wrapped up.

Hi,

WhalerAce is in Bahrain right now so I get the privledge of taking his place right now. We are planning on coming to this event and then he has a conference to attend in Tampa on the following Tuesday so we will be heading over there on Monday. We have reservations at MacRae's for Friday, Saturday & Sunday.

Looks like everything is set.....but we do have one small problem (actually 4 small problems) We have 4 small fur-babies (known to non-fur baby parents, as dogs)..

MacRae's is not a fur-baby friendly accomodation so I am looking for a pet sitter or vet kennel that I can let them stay at from Friday night until Monday when we head to Tampa. The hotel in Tampa is fur-baby friendly.

WhalerAce said that maybe someone who lives down around where we are heading might know of someone who pet sits or a vet kennel.

Please let me know...

Thanks,
WhalerAcesWife

There ARE supermarkets in Hommo. This is not the Deliverence rendezvous:) We have all day to make a Publix run after we figure out what we need/forgot. The little things are important like plastic cutlery, paper china, napkins, cups, condiments, etc. Let's try and bring our own and a few extra for those who forget. You can ring up a $100 bill easy on that stuff.....rather spend it on BEER!

Ace...bring what ya want....SC is famous for BBQ pork....Carolina style. Has anyone found out if MacRae's will let us cook? I assume so being some are in the kitchenette suites but you know what assume spells.

I am in contact with Al and one of us will be bringing a couple dozen blue crabs. Other will be bringing some snow crab or something from the sea. Beer is readily available but if you want to bring a local favorite, go for it. In FL....we really don't have local brew, just the norms. No Tampa Bay brewery, etc that I know of. Anyone bringing a blender? Should we bring stuff for that like Margheritta mix, etc?

I hear manatee is a local favorite!

Pat....where's my hat? ;)

We got a good plan going for dinner. Probably can pick up some picnic stuff (plates, etc.) at Bj's or Sams and be pretty cheap . What about breakfast on sunday? Are there any places to eat nearby or is it donuts and stuff? I will call Macraes in a.m. to find out about cooking onsite. Some SC pork sounds good ;)
Are manatees in season?

Chris

Peak season....just have to harpoon them from a boat.....like Big eye Tuna. No need to buy a boat load of plates....everyine just needs to remember some, and some condiments.

What are we doing for Sunday? I am definately doing a gulf run then swimming with the lunch(manatees) and heading out at say noonish or whatever. Love donuts....should have been 5-0.

Do you need a manatee license or just wait until dark? Just kidding-hope FWC isn't reading this! We'll be around awhile on sunday (only 2hrs to home). I'm starting to look like a donut so stay clear! The cafe at work is 20' from my desk and they deliver (sad but true) Maybe some NJ style taylor ham, egg and cheese on a hard roll Nick? Ok no more food talk.
BTW is the Homossassa river fresh or saltwater?

Taylor ham? It's PORKROLL you North Jersey people(made in Trenton).

Water is fresh and crystal clear(spring fed) at the end then gets saltier as you get closer to the gulf.

I got the Tums.

fno posted 02-18-2004 10:23 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
I always knew it as Taylor ham on a hard roll, maybe with some cheese or an egg. Where else but Jersey does a hard roll with butter qualify as a wholesome breakfast?
Bigshot posted 02-19-2004 10:25 AM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Not to get off subject but that is North jersey. I grew up in Trenton and LBI and we ate porkroll which is taylor ham. The roll & butter thing I never saw until I moved to N. Jersey after college for work. I would ask for porkroll, egg, & cheese and they thought I was nuts....ok Taylor ham and they would get it.

I used to import my porkroll and Shop-Rite iced tea mix from NJ. Now I can buy prokroll and Publix(I think)brand Iced tea mix is made by the same company in Canada that Shop Rite uses.....HAPPY DAYS! Took me 6 years to find good NJ type food down here(cheese steaks, Gnocchi, hoagies, etc), makes life easier.

Buttered hard rolls- the Parsippany favorite!
Anyway, called MacRaes today and they said no problem with cooking out there- they have a few grills and o.k. to bring more stuff.
Don't forget the ketchup for the Taylor Ham aka porkroll for those central jersey types.

p.s.- You know you are from New Jersey when even your H.S. cafeteria makes great italian subs. ;)

1 Week to go! Let's get an idea of what everyone needs to bring foodwise. Besides crabs and old bay, what else?
We'll probably leave home on Orlando about 7:30ish or so and be there around 10-10:30. If anyone wants to meet up we can meet at Turkey Lake service plaza on the turnpike and go from there. From Orlando you have to take I-4 to the TP to get there - 408 puts you on north of there- we'll stop there about 8-8:15, if anyones there great, if not see you at Macrae's. A friend of mine will be at Crystal river saturday and may cruise up to meet us in his Century (no egg throwing ;). We ran down the ICW south of Melbourne today and the weather was great, hope it holds up another week.

OK, here is who it looks like is coming this weekend. Looks like about 28 people. How many plan on eating some of this South Carolina pork barbeque? And how much do you plan to eat -- I need to get the order in tomorrow.

Super excited about this weekend -- weather guessers say it should be around 80, and I understand from Bigshot that the water temp is a constant 72.

Hopefully see you all Saturday night, and most on Friday night!

Team - Didn't realize that I failed to provide a cell # - 321-794-2740.

Chris - I will be leaving Melbourne around 6 - 6:30 which should put us in the area of Turkey Creek about 8 or so. It would be really cool to have a land caravan also...

I might be bringing 2 more(5 total) but not 100% and don't buy more to feed them, we will be bringing plenty to eat.

I say we just make it one of those plate things....bring a plate or 2, maybe one entree and one appetizer. So say a rack of ribs and some slaw or a bucket of KFC and some potato wedges, etc. No need to go crazy here and the last thing we need is enough food for a small army. I am bringing some crabs and a couple t-shirts plus who knows what else food wise. If the other couple comes, I will have them bring the snow crab. Bring what you pride yourself in making but is simple and easily reheated or eaten cold. We are not going to have a full kitchen here. So if Buffalo wings or your forte.....bring a few dozen, etc.

Ace no need to bring 100lbs of BBQ if you catch my drift. However if possible, bring me a bottle of the spicey vinegar sauce they put on it and I will gladly pay you for it(for my home).

Nick,

I placed an order for 15 pounds of Pork BBQ. It will be vacuum packed in 2-pound bags, so we will be OK if all of it is not eaten.

There's a variety of BBQ sauces -- any better description of what you want?

Getting excited about the trip.

I generally don't cook too much... thats why I'm bringing my "X". Actually, I'm just bringing her so she can tow the kids 13'er. Or...??? Whatever, she's a lot of fun and loves boats.

My cell No. is (407) 461-1525.
We'll bring some kind of dish.

cmarques, I think Turkey Lake Plaza is south of the new 429 tie-in from Apopka so maybe we can time a rendezvous at the I-75 exit or something. I have your cell no. and will call about 7:30 or maybe even Friday.

Ace....Something spicey(hot) and basically vinegar. Like what they put on the table to put on your pork....nothing fancy, more like "house" brand. My father knows EVERY BBQ joint on rt95 from NJ-FL so I have been to many. I always forget to buy some of that sauce. My Dad is gonna get me some from Fred's but sounds like your place is good, so the more the merrier.

Yanked the 17 yesterday and what a mess....I mean biblical proportions of oak leaves. Hope to get her ship shape by friday.

Looks like my cousin Jeanne will be joining us this weekend too! She's my fishin bud! I'll bring the mac-n-cheese casserole; it goes with everything! Especially fish and crabs. Sound like we are going to have plenty of food.
I will also be bringing a few "goodie bags" from Magic Brush. Ace, Jeanne is Carl's daughter. I think maybe you met her in the bahamas. Anyway, we'll see you this weekend.
All be safe in your travels

See you Saturday....

I excorsized the leaves out of my boat via a Holy water power washer and a blower. Then I bleached the living snot(literally) out of it and she is clean. Now to get her ship shape.

Got the shirts yesterday and talked to Smitty....he's confused on what to bring but is clear headed enough to remember the Tequila.

Last night we went to take my parents out to supper so that we would not be rushing around on Thursday before our departure for the rendezvous. As I was helping my Mom into her seat in the Suburban, she passed out (she's 83, by the way and my Dad is a young 86). So we rushed over to the Medical Center, which fortunately is two blocks from where they live right now, and admitted her with an arythmic heart pattern. She is having tests done today and tomorrow, so Joyce and I will reluctantly have to pass on this rendezvous. Joyce is trying to cancel our reservations at McRae's but if we are stuck with the rooms, one of y'all is more than welcome to use it.

Bigshot, I was definitely hoping to meet you this trip to show that we do indeed exist, and Janis, we were looking forward to seeing you again. And for the rest of you, I was excited about putting faces to names and handles.

We definitely are going to try to do the Stuart thing, so hopefully will see y'all there.

Hope you have a great weekend weatherwise, and all of y'all be safe and have fun! Please take pictures and post them somewhere! Thanks.

WhalerAce & Joyce

I knew you did not really exist!

Hope all is well, we will toast one for you and your family.

They should cancel the room being 24 hour notice is all they require I believe.

Two of us will be driving down Saturday afternoon and look for you all around 5 or whenever you get back to the dock.

Got a pretty big chunk of smoked fish and a box of crackers.

Anything else - just email before Sat. morning, not that GNV, FL has much to offer. No cell phone.

See y'all

Well good news and bad news. Bad news is they messed up my reservation and I did not have a room. Good news is they gave me Ace's room. I would have been one pissed puppy if I had to sleep in the boat being I had the first 5 rooms reserved 2 months ago:)

Keep us posted Ace and we will send you some pics.

Donel...meet you at the Tiki bar. Look for the tan CW shirts.

Janis....better check with MacRae's about rooms, etc.

Well fun seekers - Had hoped to make this one. Pulled the boat out this A.M. to get it ready. Steering cable frozen. Been bad for about a year so time to replace the whole thing with a NFB. New control cables while I'm at it. Will be ready for the next one. Gonna hoist a Miller Light or two or three tomorrow wishing I was there. Have fun.

It was great to meet you all.
My friend & designated driver Nancy - who doesn't know 'ships from shinola' - liked all the nice people and their boats, especially the blue inside ones.
Kudos to Nick and all the chefs who were hard at it when we left.

Til next time

Don...Hard at what....drinking?

Nice meeting & seeing everyone again. Although it was not our biggest rendezvous with 11 boats....it was probably the most fun. I think we had over 20 at Beercan 1.5 years ago. Everyone had a great night except smirkless who is cursing Dick Fisher for not putting nonskid where it is needed the most....on the bow. Every classic owners has been there and done that. Food was great and so was the company. Janis & Smirkless had some nice giveaways along with the T-shirts who went to Smitty for driving 350? miles and Smirkless because we felt bad. Actually HE felt bad and we picked his name out of a hat:) We had Gonna do it again, I think Janis was trying for November so keep your calendars open.

We had:

17' 1986 Newtauk-Me, Laurie & Smitty
17' 198? Montauk-Bob & Therreca
17' 1968 Nausett- Ward & Elliot
13' 197? sport-Patricia(?) & Ethan
13' 1973 sport- Janis & Jean
18' 1983? Outrage-Stefan & girlfriend
16' 2002? Dauntless-Chris & Michelle
18' 2000? Dauntless-Frank, Sandie, Veronica, & Ramona
21' 197? Outrage-Al & the girls
20' 2001? Outrage- Pat & imaginary girlfriend Lorraine.
17' 2003 Montauk-Don, wife & I forget

Forgive me for not knowing years, names or spelling of names. Luckily I remember something. Also Don(donel) showed up with Nancy and stayed for the amusement.

I just wanted to say that I had a terrific time and it was delightful to see everyone again. We had an awesome cookout Saturday night. The weather was fine. We built a campfire, thanks to Draftsman wife for her charm to obtain the wood and get it loaded into her pickup truck. We had a terrific spot near the water, with good live music to entertain us. Al-A-Buy bringing in a gazillion blue crabs that he and Bigshot boiled up. Then there was the Cajun boil, sausage, and corn on the cob, potatoes, jumbo shrimp and King crab legs. Hambies and hotdogs fired up on the grill. Various salads and a pound cake that weighed 12 pounds! Then there was the delicious pulled pork all seasoned up in the crock-pot. It aint a party till ya got the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, thanks Janice!
All the boats were great! Too bad I didn’t jack someone’s whaler and take it for a test drive. I guess people learn not to leave the keys in the boats when I am around. J
Hay, its all about safety and be lucky it was me, right?! ;)
Smirkless’s shorty made me laugh when his dad Ward, told him to “make sure your boat is ready to go before you put it in the water” That is when Smirkless’s boat wouldn’t start because he failed to read the article on ‘the primer on bulbs” That’s when his shorty got him back and said “Dad……” Way cute!!
Al-a-Buys one daughter made my day when I was rafting up next to them and was tying up. She was watching and said that she always learns something from me. On Sunday when their boat was being put up on the trailer, she was driving it on and an on looker said,” you can tell that its not her first time in the saddle” Al, you have great daughters!
Smirkless’s “X” Patty had her 13 too. Nice boat too. We gave her a crash course on busting up blue crab! Like she said, this is an education!
Bigshot didn’t get the manatee mustard whaler hat, Smitty got it! There was a lil raffle Sunday morning. For me, I got the ABSOLUTE best prize! It was a little wooden hand made cutting board with the Boston Whaler logo burned in on one side and a dolphin on the other side. I still have the cutting board I made in Junior High School, now these are both side by side. I will use Wards for cheeses and other appetizers.
Biggie, on the way home, I saw the FHP Camaro with someone pulled over, that’s all I needed, is for that can to fly out and hit him! Oh well, hello to everyone again and cheers to the next rendezvous!!
