Hello all.

I will be in Sarasota March 28 through April 3. I plan to rent a Grady from Cannons Marine on Longboat. My Mom has lived in Sarasota for 25 years, but doesn't get out on the water much, and I only visit once a year.

I'll have the boat for the entire day, and I'm looking for some nice cruising destinations south of Longboat.

I already plan on stopping at City Island/Salty Dog and Marina Jack, but I need some other destinations; coordinates would be most helpful.

Not a Whaler topic, I know. But I'll be thinking about my Whaler as I drive that Grady around...

Thanks all.

David

There is a bridge just a little north of cannons,
and I think thats where beer can island is.
I think that is where bigshot use to hang on
the weekends.

Also if you head north you could go out the
intercoastal to the skyway bridge and hang a
left(west). Two or three miles and you will
come to Egmont key. There is a old fort and
a light house you can check out.

I grew up in Sarasota, boating the whole time. Here are some destinations:

1: The Sand Bar on Anna Maria Island; It is a great cruise up Big Sarasota Bay and into a very nice deepwater cove- very scenic an make sure you look at the pictures inside around the bar, which makes great rumrunners, by the way...

2. Marina Jack's as you mentioned.

3. Lido Beach at the south end of Lido Key. My personal favorite beach (on earth). Watch the current. End up here for the sunset!

4. The Quay and the Boathouse. Numerous restaurants and the Ritz is in that harbor too.

There's lots more to see, but a good day would startat Cannon's, cruise over to New Pass and peek out if the Gulf is in good shape, then come back in to the big Bay and follow the ICW north to the Sand Bar for lunch. Come back down to Marina Jack's and have a look around, then head for South Lido beach, see the sunset, then go to the Ritz for some live music after dark (If you are out that long).

good luck!

Hey, thanks alot!

I never thought of the Quay. I never miss a trip to Da Ru Ma.

I've also been to Lido (by boat), but not Anna Maria. I'll put that in the GPS. I'd like to do a little swimming, I figure the Gulf is in the high-sixties by now, no?

Thanks all.

David, scratch that Sand Bar suggestion. I just remembered the name of the place is Mar Vista, and it is on the north end of Longboat Key, just before the bridge to Anna Maria. The Sand Bar is on the Gulf side, on Anna Maria Island...

Da Ru Ma is not open for lunch unfortunatley. Not much eft in the quay except for them.

Mar Vista is owned by the same people who own Sand Bar and Beach House. Mar Vista is the best for boaters. Right next to Moore's stone crab and right around the corner(literally) from Beer can beach and Longboat pass. From Cannons it is a 5 minute ride north.

If going south there is Coasters or a bunch of other restaurants on Siesta Key and south towards Venice. I recommend heading south early in the AM all the way to Venice inlet. Run outside up 3 inlets to Longboat pass or even up another few miles to Eggmont. That should take 2-3 hours. Stop at Beercan or Eggmont and swim till 2pm or so. Then hit Mar Vista for late lunch and head back to Cannons. That would be my plan. I should be at Beercan on Sunday 3/28 & Saturday 4/2 if weather is good.

That sounds like a good plan. I like Moore's; spendy though.

Thanks again.

When are you going out?

Wednesday, unless there's a small-craft advisory. Then, I'll most likely have to cancel.

I've been watching the web closely, apparently it has been very windy there.

Wednesday? Well at least you won't be bothered with traffic. Was windy until Sunday which was BEAUTIFUL!

Well, the weather was fine.

The boat, an 18 Grady CC, was pretty nice. The Yamaha 130 was adequate, but the throttle was screwy. Most likely because it was a rental boat.

We cruised all day, 8 to 5, and traffic on the ICW was light. I was disappointed to find how inadequate my Garmin G-Chart of the area was. It was enough to navigate, but I was wanting a little more detail.

Anyway, we found a great place called 'Pelican Alley' just a bit North of the Venice Inlet, that was terrific. We were originally on our way to the Crow's Nest. The food was great and their docking, although limited, was cool, with some neat dockside seating.

I'm done with the Salty Dog. I've been going there for years, and it's always been a favorite. I know it's always been touristy, but it's jut too much now. I think the quality has suffered also.

We did run north of Cannon's to a big sand bar. Lot's of folks wading and swimming; was this the legendary 'Beer Can' I've been reading about?

Thanks again.

Dave

Was it just west of Longboat pass bridge(few miles North of Cannons)? If so.....yes it was.
