Well, the wind is no longer freezing the tears on my face as I walk to work, so I guess it's time to initiate this inquiry. Last summer's get-together was great fun, and I'm hoping we can do it again this year. Somewhat selfishly, I mention that I'm renting a condo in Ephraim June 30 thru July 3, so - naturally - I would suggest one of those weekends. Realizing that it may be inconvenient for others, how about some feedback on this? If it's a different weekend, so be it - I'll just drive up again... I can check with the condo folks to verify this, but if it's ok with them, we could do a land-based bbq, etc. at the place. Alternatively, last year's raft-up and food-sharing was quite nice, too. Besides, I want to show off my newly acquired Dauntless 16.... (Unless - of course only CLASSIC Whalers need apply..[snif.. whimper]...

I am taking delivery next week of a 2004 Nantucket 190.
I live in the Twin Cities, & have contemplated a trip to Door County to explore a new area (for me).
I would be able to tow the boat over, hopefully, without any difficulty.
It would be fun to meet up with some fellow Whaler owners.
Send any specifics to my e mail.
My schedule is pretty flexible.

I would be interested in attending at end of June.

I am always interested in a Door County event, but have to indicate that the first week in July (and attached weekends) and 2nd week in August (and attached weekends) are out due to BW Great Lakes Cruising Club events now being planned.
skred posted 04-05-2004 08:51 AM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
To avoid conflicts with other events, does anyone have suggestions/recommendations for a date?
LHG, is it possible last year's event was "too" informal? Should there be a more organized "game plan", or were most attendees okay with the more casual, spontaneous approach? For my part - either venue is fine...
As Gep will testify, even a 2-boat rendezvous is better than none at all...

Last year's event was great, informal or not.

However, both Patricia and I prefer a more structured event. Depending on the dates, we are always willing to boat in Door County.

You know, when I started the Rendezvous Calendar two years ago, my intent was to provide a means for both Rendezvous planners and attendees to get their schedules in order.

Too bad it never took off.

Slippage in SB is hard-to-get late in the spring, so please let me know what dates are decided upon.

Dave, the dates are completely open at this time. I only mentioned 6/25-26 'cause I'm up there that week. Any date is fine with me. I'm not much on organizing these things, since I've never done it, but I know many CW members have. Door County is a tough place to reserve a block of rooms for a weekend unless one starts very early, and I watched with great interest the Apostle Island/Bayfield event's progress last year (with the accompanying reservation difficulties). Tough getting commitments from folks, and tougher to have a place hold some rooms. Likely it would be easier for people to put deposits down individually to insure accommodations. Nice thing about Door County is that a group can always get together at Peninsula Park's Nicolet Bay beach/picnic area, or raft up at Chambers or Eagle Island, or even at one of the smaller parks along the peninsula. Granted, slippage is limited, but even that can be overcome with a little ingenuity, like - picking up particiants who have slips in Ephraim, Fish Creek, Ellison Bay, etc. Maybe have a "slip crawl", vs. a "pub crawl"..
Just casting about (no pun intended) for ideas....
David Pendleton posted 04-07-2004 06:42 PM ET (US)     Profile for David Pendleton  Send Email to David Pendleton
For the past three years, we've gone up the 2nd or 3rd week of July.

That would work again for us. Classic71 will join us, also (Paul, if you're out there, chime in). I don't committ to much in August because that's when I run up to Bayfield on the weekends.

We book at the same motel in DT Sister Bay, and have not had any problem with accomodations. The slip is the real problem. The SB Muni Marina is extremely nice, but tough to get in to. I love the big, wide docks for sitting around drinking beer in the evening.

Last year we toyed with the idea of Yachtworks for a future trip. It's still walking distance from DT, just a bit further. It's very nice also.

We should fish or cut bait soon, though.

Dave,
I suggest you pick a date that works best for you and we'll go from there. I'll probably try Yachtworks if I decide not to launch/retrieve that weekend. Isn't Yachtworks somehow connected to Brian up there?

How about an ice report for old time sake? All my buddies are razing me because there won't be a Washington Island spring fishing (drinking) trip this year.

Keep an eye open for my old Outrage at the rendezvous this year. A really nice guy "jeffkanz" out of Green Bay bought it and it sounds like he will be using it in and around DC this summer. Glad to hear she will be used in her favorite waters. She always ran best around Washington Island.

Seattle is great but I miss my 21 OR.~mw

I may have to borrow my dad's montauk to participate though. That is unless you include Tiaras in the rendesvous :)

Brian, we haven't firmed up a rendezvous date yet, but I'll be vacationing during the time I mentioned. I always stop at Yacht Works to browse. You stay on Washington Island, right?... I sent an e-mail to you regarding dockage...

I haven't received an email. If you need a slip at Yacht Works, call 920-854-2124 and ask for Hawk or Gary. Yes, there are facilities at Washington Island. However, they may try and kidnap you to include some fresh DNA in their gene pool...

Brian, thanks for the information. I used your e-mail address off this site - maybe our network filters somehow blocked it. No matter - You answered my questions. About that gene pool... Local opinion is that it needs chlorine. Is Vi's taxi still running out there? I haven't figured out how to mount a Yakima bike carrier on the Dauntless yet....
We don't seem to be accumulating a lot of interest in some sort of rdzvs yet - but it's early. Noticed the stormcam shows the ice is out for the most part. I may zip up for a shakedown weekend in May... I miss Husby's (heck, I even miss the C&C Club)...

Dave, Rosie and I will be open either the weekend of July 10th or July 17th. Our Fin II will be glad to come also! On the 24th we have a family reunion and it would not work for us. Just think of the poor fellows in Florida who have it warm all the time and lose the excitement of maybe a nice weekend. Mike

Last year we went to Rock Island and would look forward for another trip there. Maybe if there are some early arrivals on friday we could get something going for that day?? My wife Kay bought Milwaukee Whalers' OR which she let's me skipper for her. This is our 3rd Whaler, classic 13 and 18 OR - before. I was at Twin Cities Marina this winter to re-power my 18 when Kay and daughter Jen found a way to expand our lives. I suspect our boat will launch itself and we'll just follow it to a DC Whaler gathering. Brian at Yacht Works picked out our OR in .01 secs. and told us about the event. Since we're new we'll comply to dates and wishes of others. Does formal mean a TUX? I'll need red to match boat - a Sunbrella TUX. We'll watch for dates or check in with Brian since our boat is stored there. I've traveled the waters between Sister Bay and North since I was 12, so just name the location.

I'll be there, but it may be late.

Patricia is teaching that week, and we hope to get out of the Cities by 1500 on Friday; that puts us in Sister Bay around 2300.

We may be able to get out earlier, however.

I'll know more later...

Patricia and I will arrive sometime after 2200, Friday. I will stop by Husby's after I unload the truck and dump the boat in the Marina parking lot.

The turnout this year looks to be a little light, but I'll look for anyone wearing Whaler gear.

Classic71 and I are in adjoining slips (49-50) at the Sister Bay Marina. I propose we meet there at 0900 Saturday to discuss what we want to do.

We will be attending, Fri-Sun with my 18 Outrage, by water from Memonimee, and in the company of JimH with his new 22 Revenge (the reason for making this crossing). We will be staying, officially or as stowaways, at the Sister Bay Marina since we will not have "wheels" to otherwise get around town. Jim and Chris want to see the whole Door County area, so we will be boating as far north as Rock Island, and as far south as Egg Harbor during these three days.

I would like to bring the new (old) 21, but it just won't be set up yet for an event like this.

Looking forward to see all of our Door County friends again!

Larry, I also would be glad to offer taxi/touring service if you and Jim need it. My son and I will be doing a bit of trolling for salmon off Gills Rock sometime that weekend (Somewhere out there is a 30-lb Chinook swimming around with $25.00 worth of my terminal tackle in his mouth from last week.). Other than that little distraction, I'd be glad to offer my services...

Ladies and Gentlemen, enjoy your trip.

I do hope to join the Door Co. event, perhaps next year
in my Outrage - 19'.

For better or worse, I'm taking the 15' Striper up to
Lake of the Woods, lashing her on back of a houseboat,
and heading far out into the islands for some of the best
fishing to be had.

I'll be departing Friday and hope to read a summary
and view some photos upon my return at the end of the month.

My lovely wife will be playing in Door Co. with her friends
this weekend. I'll have her keep an eye out for you.

Got home after midnight on Tuesday morning. Our drive Monday was stretched about four hours longer due to a broken spring bracket on the trailer. I got in fixed in Manistique, Michigan. Fortunately it happened about a mile from the boat launch there. We limped over to the ramp, got the REVENGE 22 WT WD off the trailer, took the wheel off the trailer with the broken spring bracket, and drove the 3-wheeled trailer over to a local auto repair place. They re-welded the bracket, straightened out the axles, and put the wheel back on.

Then back to the ramp, re-load the Whaler, and got back on the road. We would have gone for a boat ride while waiting for the trailer to get fixed, but it was blowing like stink out of the south, and Lake Michigan looked ugly.

I better grab a shower and get to sleep--I have to go to work in eight hours!

Jim (and the Michigan Folks)-

Have you ever considered taking the Luddington to Manitowoc ferry across the lake instead of making the drive through Chicago traffic or the long trip over the top of the lake?

Manitowoc is ~10 miles from Twin Cities Marine, and ~50 south of Sturgeon Bay.

I don't think it is cheap (~$250 each way for truck, 2 adults and a 25 foot trailer), but it would save a lot of driving.

I did this when I went to look at a boat in Michigan, one weekend. I ended up not buying the boat, but I could never have made it over and back in one weekend otherwise.

I think everyone had a great time, and the trip up to Rock Island was the highlight of the weekend. It was great to see everybody again. Sorry I missed "Harry Harpoon".

Jim - That's too bad about the trailer spring. But getting it fixed could have been a lot worse. I guess QBrennen called it right - "SLEAZY LOADER". Now you know why I changed mine out immediately. Considering how cheap trailer springs are, I think it's wise to just replace them at ten years.

WE fished for only 3/4 hr and sea conditions were not good for maintaining proper speed. We did have one trip on a downrigger. Found out the next day that the evening bite did not happen Sat. evening. Everybody wanted to sleep Sunday AM, so that took the morning bit out. We did have fun at Horseshoe Island Sunday and there was what looked like a 31' Whaler with twin outboards comming in as we left.Rose and I enjoyed everyone's company. Maybe we can have a trout or salmon boil next year on one of the islands??

Well I'm sorry I missed everyone too. I did get to see David P. and Jim H. And I did manage to get out on the water about 3:30 Saturday afternoon. Tried making radio contact with a few of you, but you must have known it was me calling, 'cuz no one answered. No my dog, Harpoon Holly, and I degectedly took the Harpoon Mystery home. Paul H. stopped by the yard a couple of times to visit, and that was nice. Frankly that Saturday afternoon was the first time I've had the boat in the water this year. Harry--sorry we missed the chance to hook up on the water with you on Saturday. With six boats and about 30 people, it was somewhat of a difficult group to get organized, pointed in one direction, and underway!

I think about two hours after we got back I found that slip of paper with your cellular telephone number on it--oops!

We had a very good time and found Door County has great boating, so we anticipate returning for another visit. At that time, we'll be sure to visit Yacht Works and have a longer chance to become acquainted.
