As a forum member for 3 years, I believe there are enough whalernuts in the area for a rendezvous.

Many options for the location, please advise interest and I'd gladly coordinate!

I would be interested, I spend a few weeks of the summer at my house in York Harbor, Maine. I have often cruised down to Portsmouth harbor in my 16 foot dauntless.

I may be interested. I would be coming out of the Merrimack river. I just took the tarps off the boat, but won't have her in the water for several weeks.

Sounds good, guys, spread the word and once we reach 5 boats, we can try and nail down a date.

Hello All:

I would be interested as well. I keep my classic Katama on a trailer, so could put in anywhere.

How about a run out to the shoals. Also another favorite place of ours is Cranes Beach.

Let's do this. I do, however, need some lead time, my job takes me out of town for a few days at a time.

Hope to hear more soon.

good to see some momentum gaining.....keep spreading the word!

The Shoals is obviously a great idea, and as a Plan B, might we consider the southern side of Fox Point on Great Bay? Might be easier for smaller boats if the conditions in the Harbor or the ocean are harsh. Great place to raft up and han out.

gf,

What happened to the Whaler, and how do you like the Mckee Craft?

gf posted 04-26-2004 01:10 PM ET (US)     Profile for gf  Send Email to gf

newt, I never had a Whaler. I looked at several, however. My new Mckee is great, if you see a 20' yellow center console zipping by on the Merrimac, it might just be me. How is Amesbury treating you?
newt posted 04-26-2004 04:15 PM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
gf,

Amesbury is great...except for the property taxes (up 25% my first year here!). I love being so much closer to the mouth of the river.

I will keep my eye out for you on the river. I have a couple more chores to take care of on the Montauk, and then hopefully will be in the water within two weeks. I will definitely be in for the Mackeral, and maybe will even try Rocks Village for some shad (is that what they fish for up there?) this year.

An old friend of mine is "Station Manager" out on Appledore island this year, so I plan on making that trip a lot this summer. He seems to think I will be his personal water taxi, and in all honesty, I look forward to it!

Hope to catch up with you on the river this year.

newt posted 04-27-2004 01:08 PM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
OK, I promise good weather, and there are plenty of options for trailer access.

There is a public ramp a few miles up the Piscataqua (sp?) river in Newington (or maybe it's Dover Point), or you can put in down in my neck of the woods in Salsbury, Newburyport.

All - wish I could guarantee the weather issues, but the suggestion of the public ramp on Dover Point would work well with all size boats, parking is ample, and access to the ocean or the bay is excellent.

Conditions could make it tough for smaller whalers to attend from Southern ME or Northeastern MA, so Dover Point has easy access to the Great Bay (snotty day) or Isles of Shoals (calmer day)

There's a quick way to ruin your truck!

I would suggest launching at either Rye, NH:

or as mentioned above, the ramp in Eliot, ME:

Hello All:

Around the 4th of July is good for me too. Lets try to decide on the place and the day, and then see how many are in.

I just took my Katama out of the garage and washed the dust off, and ran the motor for a while. I am looking forward to using my boat in the next couple of days.

Also, my brother just bought a brand new 2003 leftover 18' Ventura with a 135 Optimax. So he is in as well.

I am looking forward to meeting you guys & gals soon.

Saturday July 3 or Sunday July 4th sounds great!

Do we have a strong consensus on the rally point? I think Great Bay is good for access and mellow conditions. There are plenty if good spots to raft up and hang out. Portsmouth and the IOS will be pretty crazy if we stick with the Holiday weekend!?!?!?!?

The official / unofficial post party could be at Newick's? Dockspace in Portsmouth would be challenging that weekend...

Al Houde, where are you and your new '86 20' Outrage? haven't seen you on the river yet..........

OK Then.......I have to agree that the 4th up here is loco, but I appreciate that it may be easier for folks to make it on a longer weekend.

So to try and get this on everytone's calendar....I'll ask that you all email me with 3 things:

1: Preferred weekend: 6/26-27, 7/3-5, or 7/10-11.
2. Preferred rendevous location (we seem to have a mix of larger and smaller boats)
3: Preferred 'post party' location

my email is bkoelbel@comcast.net

Looking forward to securing a date/location and meeting everyone. I've invited jimh, so he's looking forward to our final decisions!

My vote is for 7/10-11.

I read on another web site that the ramp at Hilton Point Park in Dover will be closed this year.

I stand by my earlier recommendation of the ramp at Rye, NH as a starting point.

http://www.nhstateparks.org/ParksPages/RyeMarina/RyeMarina.html

If we do settle on Rye Harbor, then Saunders - http://www.saundersatryeharbor.com - would be a natural location to toss back a few brews.

I looked for Rye in my GPS but I must have deleted it. If the seas are friendly on the 10th I'll launch in Eliot, Me. I can meet both of you at the mouth of the Piscataqua and we can go down to Rye. Do you folks have marine radio in your boats or amateur radio. I'm also an amateur radio operator N1FQP. Either way I'll have a radio with me. My wife and I are really looking forward to this get together.
By the way, if the sea is rough or the weather bad I'll launch in Rye.

Gearing up for this.

Anyone got advice on fuel requirements? I have a 28 gal tank. Should I bring 2 6 gallon tanks as well?

Please don't laugh. I have not done any distance runs so I have no idea what my gph rate is for my '86 Yamaha 90.

John O posted 07-03-2004 11:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for John O
Phil. I am guessing the 28 gal tank would be enough.

If you use 4 GPH which should be the high end and it took 2 hours from Casco Bay to NH then you are looking at 8 gal out and 8 gal. back. this leaves 12 gal for safety sakes.

Is the rule of thumb 1/3 tank out 1/3 back and 1/3 for safety?

I am just guessing here. I think my 2001 Mercury 75hp 2 stroke is averaging around 2.3 or 2.5 gph.

If someone could confirm my math it would help one way or the other.

vink posted 07-05-2004 09:16 PM ET (US)     Profile for vink  Send Email to vink
Phil, Extra gas is not a bad thing. If you want to top off you tank you should be able to get fuel at York Marina, Wentworth By The Sea in New Castle and I think the pump will be open in Rye Harbor. Do you have any idea how long it will take you to get down to Portsmouth? I'm thinking about launching in Eliot, ME around 8:30-9:00 AM. I could wait for you and York Harbor around Kitts Rocks buoy R "2KR". If I don't meet up with you there I'll see you in Rye. So far, the wx looks good for Saturday.

I am expecting to get down to him in York to launch EARLY so we can meet you and end up at Rye at 11.

No idea how long it will take us. Will be doing some nautical research this week.

Can you email me a phone number so we can coordinate?

Hopefully I am in. I just need to sweettalk the wife a little. I will be coming from the Merrimack River. John O, lets meet up for the last leg of your trip. I can meet you at the Merrimack River Bouy (I am assuming you will be coming from Annesquam).

York Harbor to Rye is not far - maybe 12-15 miles. You guys should make the open ocean part of it in 50 minutes if it's snotty, and 30 minutes if it's flat. (Those are Montauk times).

This past Saturday, I ran 46 miles on less than 12 gal of gas. This was a combination of cruise and no wake speeds in a Montauk with 90 hp carburated 2-stroke.

Does anyone know the specific place we are going to meet in Rye? Is there a beach we can pull up to?

The trip thru the Annisquam will take you an hour or so. I have only been thru on a sailboat, but your no-wake speed will be similar. Then, it's about 9+ miles to the Merrimack, so figure another 20 minutes if nice seas. From the mouth of the Merrimack, we will have another 12 miles to Rye Harbor entrance. Again, if good weather about 25 minutes. Bottom line - if you go under the bridge on your end of the canal at 8:30, we can meet outside the Merrimack at 10:00 +/-, and then be in Rye well before 11:00.

Too bad the tide will be low, or I would meet you at the Annesquam, and show you the way thru the plum island river. It's a great way to get from the Merrimack down to Crane's beach without going out in the ocean. Oh well, another day.

To view a chart of the area, follow this link and then select a specific chart. You can zoom in or out, and select different charts. Also, you can right click the picture and save the image to print out.

http://map.marineplanner.com/mapping/chart/chartindex.cfm?z=250&lat=42.8698068861&lon=-70.6302931978

If anyone needs a chart, I could photocopy and send in the mail. I highly recommend having a chart of the area!

GF, are you coming from the Merrimack also?

Thanks Newt.

My boat is in the Annisquam near the train bridge. I can get to the mouth of the river in about 30 minutes. I went up it yesterday on my way to Plum Island. I did not gauge the time from the river mouth to Plum Island.

I will take a cruise up the River this week and time it. I may also continue North and see how long it takes to Plum Island.

I will let you know.

Thanks again for the info.

We should meet in the harbor. Then we can decide what we'll do. Maybe a cruise out to the Isles of Shoals, up to Portsmouth or up to Great Bay. It will be nice to have a whole fleet on an excursion. Should we pack a lunch or try to eat somewhere. There are not too many places along the waterfront in that area. I don't think that Newick's dock can accomidate us. There is another place to eat up one of the rivers in New Castle.

Do we have a head count yet? Are there any pinic areas accessable by boat?

My schedule for Saturday is still a little sketchy.

All you guys in Montauks are going to make the run to Rye harbor by water?

Weather forecast looks good for Saturday: sunny and in the low 80s. Marine forecast, however, is calling for seas of 2 to 3 feet.

newt, if I make it, I will be coming out of the Merrimack. You can contact me off-line.

vink, john o, york harbor, phil tyson, castnover, jonha, and newt =7

Maybe gf, hobie, seajet, dspinosa, and bboeri =12.

Sounds like we are looking at anywhere from 7 to 12 boats. We definitely need to find a place where we can park 'em all.

What model whalers are you guys launching up in York?

Phil Tyson posted 07-07-2004 11:16 PM ET (US)     Profile for Phil Tyson  Send Email to Phil Tyson
I talked to Kyle (York Harbor) and it will be problematic for me to launch there so I am going to meet up with Vinc in Eliot and launch there.

Vinc has a 15 sport, me a Montauk, Kyle has a 16 Dauntless

Since Kyle is offline, I will keep him apprised of any developments.

I spoke with Castnover today and we plan on meeting on the Annisquam River in Gloucester, Ma around 8:30am then to meet Newt at 10:00am at the mouth of the Merrimac.

I think he has a 27' and I will be in my 17' Newtauk. Hope I can keep up.

I just got off the phone with a woman at the Rye Harbor Marina. She said there is no dockage and no sandy spot to beach the boats. So it looks like Rye is strictly a meeting place.

The latest marine forecast calls for seas 1 to 2 feet, which is good considering most of us are in smaller Whalers. No kidney belts required!

Smuttynose Island (Isles of Shoals) has a small beach area that we may be able to pull up to and eat some food. I have a buddy who works on Appledore Island and he is going to check it out for me this PM.

Another option is to cruise back down to the Merrimack River. The tide will be perfect for pulling up to the sandbar. It would be a great place to hang out and eat a picnic lunch.

So, lets keep it at 11:00 in Rye Harbor on 7/10. Bring food for a picnic lunch. We can decide where we go from there.

Hello All:

I am in, I did a swap at work so that I can make it. I will not get into town until about 9:30am so I may not be able to make it to Rye by 11:00am.

I would like to suggest that we try and meet in the merrimack river. There are several places we could drop the hook. or we could beach our boats on the sandbar (Joppa Flats) or we could beach over on the Salisbury side of the river. I even know a little channel we could run up into and raft and have lunch. Rye is a small harbor, no where there where we can hang out. Just launch and shove off. Cranes Beach is also a great place to beach and hang out for the day. If you want to run down the Merrimack river, I could meet you guys at the mouth around 12:00 noon.

In the meantime, here is my cell phone number (603) 303-0111. I will be reachable on it tomorrow around 11:oo am to 12:30pm. I will also have it with me on Saturday.

I look forward to meeting you guys and showing you my almost mint 72' katama.

Newt's idea of going out to Smuttynose sounds like a great idea. This is a location halfway between all our home ports and no one would be stretching their fuel supply for a run home. Newt - Any chance your friend could get us a tour of the labs on Appledore? We're looking forward to meeting everyone on Saturday.

castnover,

there is a paddle boat race around Cape Ann on Sat. It starts behind the high schoolat 7:00am with the last group leaving at 8:00am.

I guess the river will be a bit busy.

check out the City of Gloucester's web site for more info

Smuttynose island is an option, but we would be out there during a low tide and I am told there isn't room for 7 boats at low tide. We could raft up and shuttle in if we want. We can decide once we meet in Rye.

I am game for anything. Shoals, Great Bay, Portsmouth, Merrimack, whatever.

Vink, If you are interested in taking a tour of Appledore, I am sure we could arrainge that. If not this Saturday, then another time. We'll talk tomorrow.

John, see you at 10:00. Call me if you are early, as I will be out there. See the rest of you in Rye. NHKatama, we will call you. Glad you could make it.

Hello All:

I am planning on launching in the Merrimack River. By the time I get back in town, looking to hit the water around 11:30am. Have we decided where we are going to meet? It sounds like most want to meet at the isle of Shoals. This works for me. If this is the plan, let's agree to all meet there. I may be a little late by the time I hit the water, and run out to the Shoals. But I will be there for sure!!

Looking foward to meeting you all.

Again my cell number is 603-303-0111 I will have it with me Saturday.

I will try calling a couple of you in the morning to figure out which direction I should Head :)

See you all tomorrow.

Guys, I feel a little silly since I'm the one who suggested the time and place, but unfortunately I won't have time tomorrow to go up to Rye for 11:00, but if you are back down in the Merrimack River - Plum Island area give me a shout.

I've copied down a few cell phone numbers to carry with me.

You can hail me on channel 9, Minuteman, a yellow McKee Craft 196 out of Ferry Landing Marine.

NHKatama, give us a call when you hit the water. Maybe by 11:30 we will have a better plan.

gf, If you can, run out to the mouth at 10:00, and say hello - there will be 4 of us there for you to meet.

Should we step up to 8:00am and gives us an extra 1/2 hour on the river. If you want to go out the harbor side past the break water and out I can meet you outside of the Annisquam north of Wingersheak.

I will still take the river in order to conserve fuel.

John - Great to see you again.
Vin - Thanks for the launch info and escort down to Rye.
Kyle - Next summer we should hook up in your neck of the woods or meet half way from Portland.

Let me know if you want me to post your photos or if you want a copy of one of mine.

NH Katama - Sorry we missed you.

Talk to you on the board.

I spent the day working on the boat insteed of ON the boat. :(

The good news is I'm getting wet tomorow, first time this year. I'm going early in the morning in boston harbor, launching at presidents landing the Medford, doing some fishing around the airport, heading around the islands and heading heading back. We'll be pulling out of the water around lunch time, before all the morons come out.

If anyone's around give me a call.

Hey that was fun! It is so cool to meet the people behind the screen names.

I caught up with Pete (NHkatama) on the way back from the Shoals. You guys wouldn't believe how nice his Katama looks! Pete, it's a shame you got held up at the ramp - especially after the hassle of moving your schedule around to make the rendezvous.

Great to meet all you folks. I look forward to the next one!

NHKatama----Sorry I missed you and the boat. I Had to get back to Gloucester for family duties.

All----

I Had a great time meeting everyone and seeing the different boats. Franco stole the show with the 2001 26' Conquest. It was great to see the big Whaler up on plane racing up the bay. It was also fun seeing the other Montauks screaming across the water.

Let's try Cranes Beach or Plum Island before the end of summer. I also imagine Fall would be a great time for an outing with the lack of crowds.

Everyone that participated in this rendezvous or couldn't make it and would like to trailer up are cordially invited to come up to Lake Winnipesaukee on August 17th for the "Big Lake" Rendezvous. It's being held during the middle of the week because the lake is TOO busy and crazy on the weekends to be enjoyable.

I'd love to come down to Mass for another get together.

Hi all,

Glad to see that everyone had a grand time. I boat on the Piscataqua but many circumstances (death in the family, sale of house, etc.) prevented me from getting my (new to me) 1896 20' Outrage in the water until July 4th.

Hopefully another rendezvous will be planned next year and I'll be sure to make it so that I can mingle with all of the Whaler "nuts" in the area.

Fat fingers on the year. It should read 1986 Outrage.

BTW, I sold my 15' GLS Sport to another Whaler Nut down the road and maybe he will join us in future rendezvous.
