I'm wondering what the potential turnout would be if Marine Max Pensacola/Ft Walton/Gulf Shores jointly hosted a rendezvous in Pensacola FL or Gulf Shores AL. I'm thinking it could draw attendees from Ft. Walton, Panama City and Apalachicola/Port St. Joe to the east, and Mobile, Biloxi/Gulfport, and New Orleans to the west, as well as from further north in Alabama, Mississipi, and Louisiana. I already know of two attendees from as far as Ohio! :D If you'd attend such a rendezvous, please post a reply to this topic, including the boat you'd bring. If the response is substantial, I intend to forward a link to this topic to Marine Max. -- |

We will be in the NW FL area for Billy Bowlegs and later for the air show. For Bowlegs I am not sure if we will go by trawler, whaler , or both. The air show is I believe is the weekend after the 4th of July. We will be at Pirates Cove before and after the show. We watch from the east side of the Pensacola Beach bridge. I am not sure if we will bring the whaler, it's along way to tow. Any other trips to FL are always on our list of things to do. I have already trailered the 13 to ST.Pete 4 times this year to watch my daughter sail . She sails next in Cascad Locks, OR , that's a little to long a drive and I have not seen any planes with trailer hitches. |

9/11/04 is same as tenn. event, but 9/11 or 9/18 is fine for me. Any locations from big lagoon west to wolf bay are great for whalers (oyster bar , Pirates cove , tacky jacks for breakfast)just to name a few. I am also sure there are some places up Pensacola Bay. May need to check dates for Lost Bay Regatta if we shoot for the Perdido Bay area. may or may not matter. |

I've been too busy to check in with CW as often as I'd like of late, but we've kept a watchful eye on this particular thread in hopes that others are interested in a rendezvous around these parts. We'll be there, mid-September or whenever, so long as there's not a hurricane or a tropical storm to keep everybody in port! |

I can't make it mid Sept., but Priates Cove is an excellent place for a gathering. I go there each year in May for the Wood Boat Festival. The beer is cold and the cheeseburgers are great. Plenty of live oak shade trees and picnic tables. You can also beach the boat by the bar. The nearest public ramp in the Gulf Shores area is on the ICW under the Hwy. 59 bridge next to LuLu Buffets (Jimmy's sister) place. I know of two public ramps in Orange Beach. The Marina Road ramp which is near the Perdido Pass bridge and the Cotton Bayou ramp on Beach Blvd. There maybe a private ramp at Bear Point Marina just across the ICW from Pirates Cove. Ken |

There is camping at nearby Big Lagoon State Park, which is not so far away from Pirate's Cove by boat. The park does not have cabins, but there is camping for tents and campers, and the park has a nice boat launch so it is possible to go by boat to Pirate's Cove from the campground by way of the ICW. First Thought on this forum had planned to camp at this park for our rendezvous near Pirate's Cove last year, but I think it was the rainy weather we had that led him to cancel the camping aspect of the event. He can probably tell you all about the camping opportunities of the area. |

I will be there we need a date to commit to though. I dont know much about local area lodging. If your military you can stay on the NAS Navy Lodge. How far is this from Pensacola? I tried looking up hotels last night and was confused by what is where in that area. We do not want to stay in Pensacola (bad, bad experience last time we travelled through there) Cops, badguys, guns, our room door almost kicked in and running out the back as the cops surrounded the hotel. Maybe the Alabama side is a better idea. How close are Orange beach? and Perdido beach. Is a short ride by boat or would we have to trailer closer? Chris |

I say weekend of 9/11 for the date. As for motels Orange Beach , Perdido, even the east end of Gulf Shores. These are on the south side of the ICW and I am not sure about public ramps on the south side, I am sure there are some I just don't know where they are. On the north side we have stayed in Foly ,but thats about a 20 min ride, There may be something back east of Pirates Cove towards Pensacola . As for boating anything between Big Lagoon and Mobile Bay is an easy ride. Anybody been to LuLu's ? We passed there last Friday night about 2am. It looks like the dock is 100 ft. + I have heard it's a great place. |

I recommend that we meet around 11am, give plenty of time to get boats in the water and get there. We can then either try and eat lunch at Pirate's Cove or everybody bring a lunch and we have a picnic at Hunter's Point right nearby. Then, I think we should all have a Whaler convey/trek up to either Lulu's, Tacky Jacks, or some other adventurous boating run. Fort McCrae at Pensacola Pass is also an interesting exploration site and decent trek if everyone does not want to go "hangout". Last renedezvous was short because of lack of what to do afer we all met. Would have been fun if we could have hung out longer together since I met some really nice folks. But also the rain dampened things a bit too. I look forward to it. Capt. Tully Mars |

The cove at Fort McCrae is great place to beach, but be wary of the jellyfish. They seem to still be almost as populous there as they were 30+ years ago. It's 14-15 miles from Hatchet Point, a nice cruise of about an hour at 20 mph, considering the no-wake zone at the bridge. Speaking of the bridge, the Oyster Bar there would be a good place to raft up and get lunch. For those interested in camping, the Big Lagoon State Park and its launch are right across from the Oyster Bar. -- |

I'm getting excited about this rendezvous. :) I'll sign up in the official sign-up thread as soon as we know our exact plans about who is coming and when. But for sure my boat and her captain will be there. I'll try to get my friend with the Nauset to come this time, too. He got scared off by the wet weather last time. By our weekend in September, the almost daily thunderstorms we experience in the late spring and summer months in these parts should be over. Of course, our date is right at the height of hurricane season, but my bride and I had the nerve to get married outdoors in Mobile on Sept. 6 almost seven years ago. And we had perfect weather. A "run" somewhere as part of our activities this year sounds like a good plan, as well as rafting up at some point or just docking or beaching at one of the various places others have mentioned. We haven't been to the new Lulu's yet, but maybe we'll get to check it out soon. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. |

Jeff, I like the meeting time and think we should do lunch at Pirate Cove. I Vote for FT McCrae. It would be about a 1 hour run and we could beach or moor all the whalers together. Shallow water for all to run and dogs are allowed. The run down the ICW would be pretty cool to see. That is my two cents. Jeff |

Tracey, Please come!! Let this be an official invitation for all other areas to come see the florabama whalers! As for LuLu's I must mention this (as much as I do like the place)....it has limited docking facilities. The only mooring dock is the ICW front, and it only has room for about 4 Montauks. If "other" boaters beat us there, there won't be room for us. Pirate's Cove ought to be not so busy at this time, so lunch there and then a run some place else does sound like a good idea. I like your thinking for #3 and #4 also (Pirate's Cove for lunch Saturday and an afternoon run to Fort McRae). As far as No. 1, the two boat ramps, courtesy pier and modest wharf at Josephine Park are excellent (and free) facilities for launching. It's in the same little inlet at Pirate's Cove, so anybody who shows up a little late could easily find everybody beached at Pirate's Cove. You can't go anywhere on the water after launching at the park without going right by Pirate's Cove by way of a narrow passage out to whatever that stretch of the ICW is called that connects Perdido Bay to Wolf Bay. If Pirate's Cove isn't so crowded, we'd probably have room to congregate there before lunch and meet each other and look at boats. I was going to say we could hang out at the pier at the park or even beach at nearby Hatchet Point like we did last year, but maybe folks should go ahead and get their spots on the beach or tied up at Pirate's Cove before the lunch crowd. (I defer to Tully and the others familiar with the place about how crowded it is there in September. My boat was out of commission for a few months beginning last September, so I've never been to the place at that time of year.) This Web page from last year's rendezvous.... http://www.super8filmmaking.com/Whaler_Rendezvous/Rendezvous.html ...shows pictures of the park facilities and a map of the area. I have no clue where the new Lulu's is, as the last time I visited Lulu she was at the old Week's Bay location. We will have our 15-month-old daughter with us on our small boat, so our exact level of participation at any given moment will depend on how well she is doing. Nevertheless, we are renting Ken's Gulf Shores townhouse, so we will be in the area Friday, Satuday and Sunday evenings. We look forward to be a part of some or all of the fun, depending on how it goes with my littlest crew member. Anybody have any experience with small children for extended periods on a small boat? She has done well with a few short excursions. She's such a good, accommodating little girl, but I don't want to ask too much of her. We're taking her out a few more times this coming month to further acclimate her to the whole deal. |

Jeff (2manyboats) brought up boat launching on the other thread. Can anybody confirm that there is a ramp on the eastern side of Perdido Key close to 292? Was told it is in the Gulf Beach area somewhere around "Canal A Way" Road or River Road just before the bridge north to Pensacola. Thanks Jim |

Jeff Thanks, it should be all the way west on "Canal A Way" which is the last road before the ICW to the left(west). Jim |

I just received a confirmation number on a beautiful Condo. Walker Key which is in OrangeBeach has a private boat slip, outdoor pool and is located on the Intracostal canal. They do still have vacancy's. The number is 800-213-9544 if anyone is looking. Man I'm getting excited. |

Jeff, Boat ramp answer to my question: A friend brought by a copy of "Boater's Guide to Pensacola Bay" which shows a Marina at the location called Holiday Harbor with a boat ramp on Old River Road versus "Canal A Way". Thanks Jim |

There is a dirt ramp at Johnson Beach which is east of River Rd. on the south side of the ICW. It's close to where 292 dead ends. |

Jim, Didnt make it to Holiday Harbor, Marine Max postponed the fishing tounrney until October. I have been there before. I can tell you the Ramp is small and they will probably charge you to launch. They do have fuel and pier space. It is very close to the Pirate Cove Area and is at the start of the westerly side of the ICW and no wake zones. Pretty central if we do the Pirate Cove and the FT Mcrea thing. |
