Topic: Sarasota, FL Whaler Rendezvous Sign-In

Well, because of my parents' deteriorating condition, we don't feel comfortable leaving town for more than a weekend, so in lieu of doing the Green Turtle Cay week-long rendezvous, we are going to take in the Sarasota and Bimini events instead.Besides, we had SO MUCH FUN in Stuart, that we had to do more Whaler events. So if y'all don't mind, I'll start another sign-in sheet. I really do this so that we can contact each other if we need help on the way down, or maybe want to caravan down the Interstate, or whatever. Again, don't mean to be intrusive. As last time, I would suggest the following: a) Screen Name b) Real Names c) Boat model and Name (if one) d) Cell phone number(s) e) Staying in What Hotel?
We (at least me) will be wearing our ContinousWave shirts on Friday at registration.
Looking forward to seeing all of the CW-ers there! Ace
PS This time we are NOT bringing the furbabies (Nantucket, Montauk, Sport and Tender)!

Frank,I almost think that the Hyatt is a better deal at $150.00 per night! You guys do realize that I wasn't be nosy about the rates -- I just remember somewhere that someone was asking about alternatives to the Hyatt. We are about a mile away at the Comfort Inn. Thanks Ace |

Chris, steering is over rated on a boat. If you must have it get Michelle to sit in back and push the motor from side to side on uyour command. |

I'll bring some rum; you bring some rum; Big, bring some rum; Ed, Frank; bring some rum. Oh, and somebody get some orange and pinapple juice. I don't think the Hyatt will let 2 women sleep in a 17' boat at their marina :)I think I will bring mixers since we have plenty of rum. Rum & Pineapple is one of my favorites but the sugar hangover is not one of my favorites. |

Here's the word on the Goombay Smashes. We can't take them to the welcome party, as the Hyatt is taking care of all the drinks and the food. HOWEVER, there is nothing that says we can't have them on a "booze cruise" as long as we have a D.D. Pat, here's your chance to be a real Coastie.... Janis |

What time(2pm?) and who is meeting up with me on Friday? I am yanking the Hydra-Sports tonight and dropping it off to get a full cover made. I will have plenty of dock space because of that. I am marine-texing a nice chip on the keel of the Newtauk and will hopefully have enough time to wax and get the Pate tank in. E-mail or call me at 941-545-3808. |

Other than Georgia, where is the best place close to where we are going that has the best-priced gas? Gonna need around 140 gallons or so... See y'all Friday afternoon! WhalerAce & WhalerJoyce |

When you get close to rt75 on rt4(if going that route) there is a "Flying J's" that should be cheap. If not, my exit is 224 off of 75(then go east a couple blocks) has a Raceway that is about $.10-.15 cents cheaper than Sarasota due to taxes. 87 octane is roughly $1.91 at Raceway, I believe about $2-$2.05 by the Hyatt. Depends on how much more your truck will burn towing around 800-1000lbs of fuel. |

Well we won't be making it for this trip. Too much stuff going on (anniversary next week, $$$, nephews b'day, $$$, etc), so sorry we'll miss our friends this time. I figured out fixing my steering, gas in truck and boat, hotel, entry, etc would make it about a $400.00 + weekend in addition to above. Sucks to be poor =). Anyway will see everyone at the next event and hope you all have a great time.Chris |

Looks good for the offshore fishing. To bad Tarpon are not on the menu for this tournament. The Tarpon fishing is just starting to get in gear around here. More showing up in Boca Grand and around the area beaches. I got zero this year on the Kings, when out trolling for them three times and each time we encountered both bad seas and no signs of bait or birds. I did hear reports of some Kings and Spanish from other guides, although for around here the name of the game for the next few months will be Tarpon. Ed, with your Outrage which is same model and year that provided me with some great offshore fishing for a couple of years should put you on some good spots for Grouper. I may need to abandon my crew and talk you into allowing me to mate on your boat. ;)Inshore will be a little challenging since we will only have one tide for the day “High” + 2.3 feet and that will push the redfish well into the mangroves. We will be hard pressed to get some good moving water until the outgoing starts around 1:45 p.m., and that looks promising. The redfish bite has been good in my area with a lot of over sized being caught and quite a few rats. Slot length will be the name of the game for this tournament. Trout fishing has also been good, and I hope that we get our share. I have found most in 4 to 5 feet of water close to grass flats and deeper channels. All in all, this should be fun to see everyone again and meeting some new people. I will be there around 5:30- 6:00 or so. Don Chris, sorry to hear that you will not be joining us, to bad since I was hopping to share my room at the Ritz. Plenty of room, now I just needs 10 more guests to fill up the dinning room. |

Man what a fun time. Great giveaways, food, scenery, etc and the people were not bad either:) I crewed on Swellmonsters 20' since Don did not have a bimini. We caught the trashcan slam. A catfish, perch, grunt, puffer, scamp, and a friggin sea horse. Pat won smallest fish and we came in dead last(for those who weighed in). 99% of the boats did not do well fishing but we all had a grand time. If I could change anything I would have made it about 5-8 degrees cooler and drop the winds down 5-8 as well....other than that it was almost perfect and no rain what so ever. Glad to see the crew again minus a few, see you on the west coast again in the fall....keep your eyes peeled to this forum for the event. |

What a great time! What a “swell” event! :) Thank you Boston Whaler!!! I cant list all the sponsors or all the people, except my man Will Rodgers, the man giving out all the prizes and awards, Corrine for giving out the raffle tickets, Tracy for being Tracy, both gals making me feel welcome and appreciated, which is a feat in its self ;) . and laminate designer Harry Wood stepping aboard my “Showtime” and bending his ear on my input on small issues and designs “all good” with my boat. I still haven’t given him my demographic input report. Where else can you hang out with great Continuous Whaler folks and have Mike, the president of Boston Whaler, stop by and hob-nob with us and share inputs, comments and cold ones. The Sarasota Hyatt provided an impressive marina, the scenery and floating docks jam packed with a wide array of clean, sexy and manly Boston Whaler vessels. They also provided a weekend full of various and abundant amounts of delicious foods, dazzling hospitality and service. The waters around that area were as crystal clear and pristine, radiant and brilliant blue as you would expect in Bahamas. I could almost see down 100 feet in the shallows. The sand was white and I just didn’t want to come home! Also had a chance to tell a few new whaler friends about this website too. Oh well, great to see most my buds again, and meet Whaler Ace and Ed Stone. Again, hats off to the Boston Whaler group, for customer service beyond the sale, and everything else.

OH, by the way, in our Captains bag, we received a set of Boston Whaler Velcro straps. I dont want to start a new thread, but what "functional" thing can you think to do with your straps? FNO & Sandy and I came up with something functional..... we strapped on a can of inverted cheese whiz to his T-top railings, so you can put a cracker beneath the spout and press and dispense the cheese while driving you whaler.... What will you do with yours? :) |

We put in at the public boat ramp right next to the Hyatt. After checking in with Whaler base we headed for Newpass. It was just a short distance from the ramp to the open gulf.At the mouth of Newpass I plugged in the numbers for the return trip. The week prior to the fishing tournament my wife kept telling me "don't take me out to far" "remember it's all for fun" and "it's not going to be rough is it" The Noaa weather radio predicted 5 to 10 mph wind. They were wrong. There was a pretty good wind coming out of the southeast.I'm not sure what the waves were, but it was a bumpy ride. By 8:30 we were 5 miles short of our secret numbers. (box cars)We started trolling down wind towards some good spots. It wasn't long before we started pulling in grouper.I made sure Angela did her share of pulling in fish to take her mind off the rough seas.It wasn't long before she was telling me how to bring in the fish and operate the boat. We ended up with 8 legal sized grouper.Angela got the largest at 12.65lb.My fish was a little over 11lbs. Just after lunch at about 12:30 We headed in towards newpass. It was a rough ride in against the wind. We were back in by 2:30 and stopped at some marina to pickup ice. My wife Angela ended up third overall offshore and first offshore female. Bigshot and Swellmonster are right!Whaler puts on a great event.Nothing but good people and fine boats! I enjoyed meeting everyone from Boston Whaler and Mercury Outboards.I was glad to meet some of the good people from continuous wave. Thank you Boston Whaler for putting on a great event! Ed Stone |
