Hi Everyone,

Since Portage Entry isn't going to hold a Rendezvou and neither is Marine Max, why don't we hold one ourselves?!

A bunch of Whaler owners could meet up at Kelleys (or another place) like last year for a weekend get-together. What do you think? I can get some Whaler Owners around my area to join as well. I would appreciate input!

If we can shoot for that same weekend, July 30th - August 1st, that would work best for me. The weekend before that we have the Dayton Power Squadron Rendezvous in West Harbor, so I've booked a campsite for 11 days in East Harbor State Park, to cover both weekends.

I am also open to having it at a marina on the mainland, such as East or West Harbor.

Moe, We could possibly have a "cruise" where all of us can go from one spot to another to "show off" whalers. It would be nice for us to stay at kelleys or put in bay for the weekend with all whalers!

I'd be interested but at this point cannot do the July 30th weekend.

I'm interested but I don't know if this one would pose a conflict with my plans for the North Channel...If I come I'll probably put in at Gibralter and make the run across to meet up with you....82 Montauk 17.....I'll keep watching...

Whaler Owners:

We will make every effort to drop over for the day. Kelley's Island and Put-in-Bay are good locations for us, as long as Erie is cooperating.

When a date is established just please post, we're easy to work with on most weekends and it would be neat to meet all of you.

Any day is good for me. We just have to pick the day that is more comfortable for the majority of the people attending. Put in bay would be excellent.

This is just my humble opinion, but PIB harbor can be a nightmare on weekends... major traffic congestion with boats without reservations hanging around, hoping to get a cancellation or a raft-up. You can't even get to the fuel dock some weekends, much less find space at the Boardwalk to dock and have lunch. I almost got run over by a large boat backing out of a slip without looking, the operator with a one hand on the wheel and the other on a drink.

With the west end too shallow and too filled with rocks to navigate out of, on some days, I'd hate to try to run a parade of Whalers into it, do a loop on the west end, and run back out. It would look cool and get attention, but I'm not into that.

The other problem is the cost of mooring and lodging on PIB, not to mention Kelleys. We paid $130/night for a B&B last year and were lucky to get that. I'd much operate out of East or West Harbor.

Just my thoughts.

I can see that the bay is going to get busier as time goes on. I never been to east & west harbor by boat. I been there by car. I would have to have someone run with me.

How cool! Just got my first Whaler and would love to attend something like this, but Kelly's looks pretty far off shore for a 13 footer! Lake Erie would have to REALLY cooperate.

Maybe, but I am going to have to do the trip with Sam as my boat is still not ready. It`s too bad Sam can`t do July 30th, that one was good for me. sam, if you read this, please give me a call, you never did :-) I also misplaced your # :-( Jack.

I might try and join you guys "south of the border" if my schedule permits. I'll keep an eye on this thread as it gets a little closer. I am completely unfamiliar with Lake Erie...never been out in this area...is there a good chart/map online somewhere that I could look at. It would help me figure out where you guys are talking about. Thanks...

Tom,
A good place to put in for us would be Lake Erie Metro Park in Gibralter and then make the run across from there to Kelly's Island or Put in Bay which ever is decided on...I'm thinking of going, but still have to double check the dates for the North Channel Rendezvous first....that one takes priority for this boating season...if it works out we could make the run out together with both our boats. I have the chart book for Erie....I don't think there are any major navigational hazards....I'll double check it and let you know....

Thanks, Pat...that would be great to know. How far is it from Gibralter to Kelly's...or to Put-In-Bay? I took the Outrage out on Lk. St. Clair yesterday for the first time...we ran all over the place looking for walleyes without much success, but had a great day on the water.

Are you talking about caravaning via Whaler from Grosse Isle area or trailering from Grosse Isle area down to the Port Clinton area and droping in there ??? I see you're from R.O. Area...I'm from Farmington Hills...on my previous post I mentioned to Tom I'd be interested in dropping in around Gibralter and making the run across with him....the more the merrier.....another question is....Will this be a long day trip or overnighter ? let us know...

Jeff, my office is in Royal Oak and I live in W. Bloomfield. I would be into launching from Grosse Ile or Gibralter and going across with you and Pat. I have a newer (1999) 18 Outrage.

July 10-11 works as well as July 25-25 or in Aug 7-8, 14-15...

Pat and Tom, I would recommend if you are wanting to put in around the Grosse Ile / Gilbrater area to look at putting in at Elizabeth Park. It is a beautiful park with great launch ramps and docks. It is easy to get to. Take the west rd exit on 75 and head east. Turn right on allen road and head south. Make a left on Van Horn. Take that to Jefferson and make a left. Once on Jefferson make a quick right on Grosse Ile Parkway. Just before you go over the bridge to the Island the enterance to the park will be on your left.

It appears that the North Channel Rendezvous is
August 7th - 15th, So I don't have to worry about date conflicts if Lake Erie Whaler Fest is July 30th or so as was mentioned earlier in this thread (I think???).

Jeff....does Elizabeth Park have overnight parking facilities if this is an overnighter? I know some of the Officers at Lake Erie Metro Park who would be willing to keep an eye on Veh/Trailer's if it is an overnighter. I suppose it would be prudent to see who of us coming from the Grosse Isle/Gibralter area are interested in an overnighter...I'll keep watching for further details...You just bought your Outrage 22 recently didn't you ?

July 30th is to tight for me..I have an important family gathering and the 1st. So if it is on the weekend of the 23-24 I should be there.

Pat, Elizabeth Park does allow overnight parking. I kept a truck and trailer there for a week once.

Yes I bought my 22 outrage about a month a ago. However My family has had a 15'ss and currently has a 1984 17' Montauk as well as other boats.

Back in 1999 I drove the montauk from Grosse Ile to Sandusky and the spent 10 days running around Sandusky, Kellys Island, and South Bass Island / PIB before coming back. I was following my Dads 32' wellcraft while traveling for port to port though, so I did not do it alone. The biggest waves I had it in where about 6 feet one evening running from kellys to PIB to set a picture of the sun setting behind perrys monument. The boat handled it pretty darn good. My dad, my friend, and myself all had lifejackets on though. So running across Lake Erie is not impossible but, it might not be a calm ride either.

Well no one date is going to work for everyone....So whoever is going to take change on organizing this event chose a date and those who can make it can make it and those who can't....well can't.

I only have plans right now on Fri. July 16th , Sun. Aug 1st, and Sat. Aug 21st..If I can not make it....no biggy.

I think my old 85 22OR would like to run with its brothers and sisters. Generally I put in at Boles harbor in Monroe, a state park with 10 to 15 ramps. You Detroiter's would like it.

Theirs Middle Bass with the old winery marina.
or
Peelee, south end, Dicks marina.[ I heard they still use dead fall for their dock post.]
or
Maumee Bay state park. Would have to make some advance arragments
or
At PIB theres always the possibility of anchouring off Perrys monument in the bay and then the big raft off.
Water taxis is always avilable.

And than theirs the FLA. KEYs

Count me in

How about Mid-Late September when there is nothing to do? I would be for that, and also off season, that is cool and maybe the weather also, whatcha think? Jack.
Moe posted 06-16-2004 01:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for Moe  Send Email to Moe
I think it's a good idea... good camping weather also. Only problem is that 3-5' chop is more common in September than it is in July/August. That's not much fun in the 150, and I don't think I'd do it in a 13'.

Since Joe (BugsyG) is a local resident, perhaps he'll pick up the ball and check marina availability for us. Those of us who trailer can always pull 'em at night.

Mazurik Access Wildlife Refuge has nice (free) ramps... four of them, and a huge, well-lighted parking area. You can see the tall lights Kelleys. It's also about the best place to launch... only 4.5 miles to the marinas at the south side of Kelleys, and maybe 10-12 miles to PIB harbor. Maybe I just got lucky, but I left my truck and trailer there from Friday to Sunday last year with no problems.

East Harbor State Park is a nice facility. The boat ramp (2) is on East Harbor, but it's shallow and grassy... easy to foul the prop with grass. We camp there but usually go to Mazurik to launch. You can make campground reservations online at http://www.dnr.state.oh.us .

It's coming up soon, but does July 9-11 work for everyone?

Who can arrive Friday afternoon/evening?

Who will need mooring and who will be putting their boat on a trailer at night? Keep in mind those of us who do pull the boat can leave it parked somewhere and drive back to where the others are moored for evening events.

OK...Does July 9th, 10th, and 11th work (or 10 - 11)? If so where would everyone like to go? Kelly's / PIB? Who would want to go? Who needs dockage? and what sizes are your boats? If we can get this together by early next week I could make some calls to Millers / Crews Nest / or the Board walk in PIB and see about getting dockage for everyone..I might not be able to though. The public docks at PIB as well as Kellys are first come first serve. But we could always raft off. I would like to see this gathering happen...Let me know what you think...

If your just looking for a dock, you can always find one at the State docks (Oakshade Point) if not go the gray barge next to them (Sqaw Harbor) and the owner, Mark, will cut you a deal.

Trust me, dockage is never a problem at the bay if you get past the City docks.

Good luck, have fun.
