Anyone interested in a get-together on the St. Croix and/or Missisisppi this September?

Dave

Yep, still interested.... Maybe Gep (if he's recovered from Georgian Bay) and there's a few others in the Twin Cities area who could consider showing up.... I figure the walleyes will be hungry....

Hi Dave and Skred,
I could see it.
Figure out a date and we'll see how it fits in the schedule.
Actually I was wanting to make a run from the Mississippi in St Paul to the St Croix in Hastings or Afton or Stillwater this summer. This might be the time to do it.

I'd probably be up for this. First two weekends are out for me - last two look doable.

The way this summer's been going, I'm guessing that the leaves will have an earlier start than usual. There will most likely be some great colors by mid - late Sept.

Patricia and I have done the Afton/St. Paul run once already.

There are actually some nice places to beach along the Miss just between St. Paul and Minneapolis.

We don't have plans for any weekend (that I know of), so let's use September 18th for a starting place, we can choose a starting point/destination later...

Sound good?

Sep. 18 would work for me.

Keep me posted on final details...can my 15' Sport handle the rivers? Hal from Waseca.
David Pendleton posted 08-27-2004 06:28 PM ET (US)     Profile for David Pendleton  Send Email to David Pendleton
I'm sure the boat could, but can you?

Seriously, the St. Croix can turn into a washing machine if there are a lot of big boats out pushing huge wakes. There are only a couple of stretches where I find this uncomfortable...

There isn't nearly as much traffic on the Miss, so it's much calmer.

Join us if you can.

The 18th sounds good to me if I can get off of work.
We just got hugely busy.

About how many miles are you considering? What kind of speed would the group travel at? Are you talking about a point to point or round trip? Thanx, Hal
skred posted 08-30-2004 11:47 AM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
Hal, I boated the St. Croix/Mississippi for 3 years, first with my Montauk 17, and later with my Sport 13. You really will have no problem with a 13. Occasionally, some idiot with a 42-footer will come plowing past and give you a wake to handle, but even that's not a problem. Mileage: from the confluence of the St. Croix and Miss. to Stillwater on the St. Croix is perhaps 20 miles, and perhaps 25 miles up the Miss. to St. Paul, etc. (Rough estimates) very easy trips, and very scenic. There may be times when you want to run it up to 25-35 mph, but cruising at a more sedate pace of 15 is what I prefer. It's a very safe boating area. You even get to go up a lock on the way to St. Paul.

Are we thinking long trip? Short trip? Raft up? Dinner at a restaraunt?

Treasure Island is a short cruise, and the marina is rarely crowded. Red Wing is an easy cruise. St. Paul is nice, also.

Stillwater is okay, dock space is limited and it's usually crowded in town.

We're up for anything, however.

skred posted 09-02-2004 08:27 AM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
Dave, I'm up for any one of those. I've been to dinner at a hotel in Red Wing that was very nice (forgot the name). The Steamboat Inn in Prescott is nice, also, as is RC's (albeit a little less sophisticated) and - they're midway from all the other places. If outdoor dining were being considered, I was speculating on hitting the Kinnickinnic Narrows beach, but -since it's a state park, I don't remember if you can barbecue there.
I think the longest distance that could be covered would be from Minneapolis to Red Wing or Stillwater, and that's (guessing) 2.5 hours max one way? Depending on your start point, (Afton, Prescott, or Minneapolis), the possibilities are myriad. Let's hear from some others - also perhaps a firmer commitment..?

Some of you may know, I keep my Conquest at Windmill Marina in Afton, MN on the St. Croix...

As it happens, the 18th is Windmill's 22nd Annual Fall Party.

The party begins at 1700 and continues until midnight. We could cruise the St. Croix/Miss during the day, and attend the party that evening. Windmill has the best ramp on the St. Croix, and parking.

Cost is $18.00 per adult, $9.00 for children 6-12; younger kids are free.

The food is catered by Tinucci's, and includes chicken, ribs (pork), antipasto, etc. It's a pretty good spread.

We must RSVP by September 15th. If you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE you want to attend, I will put the money up front for reservations and settle up later...

I'll get the particulars tomorrow and post them here.

Also, there's a bonfire, a DJ, and a ships-store bargain tent (20% off).

Plenty of room for sitting around talking boats also.

Unfortunately, I was just informed that we have a family get-together on the 18th, so we won't be able to make it. Too bad, because it sounds like a pretty good time.

Minor alteration in plans: We'll be staying at the Comfort Inn in Hudson, so we'll launch from there.... Anyone else at the Comfort Inn?

Hal, look for my 16 Dauntless... My daughter & I are coming in Friday night. Having live and launched in Prescott, WI, I'm not sure where the public ramp is in Hudson. David, I assume you and others will launch at Windmill in Afton? Is there any merit in driving down there to launch vs. Hudson?
skred posted 09-13-2004 08:47 AM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
David: reservations for two for the Fall Party (myself & daughter) would be great.
David Pendleton posted 09-13-2004 12:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for David Pendleton  Send Email to David Pendleton
There are two ramps in Hudson. One 'downtown', the other just south a few hundred yards. The DT ramp is free, I believe, but don't quote me on that. Neither ramp is all that 'well-equipped', there is a small dock at the downtown ramp.

I would use the Windmill Ramp, it's only a 15 minute drive. You can fuel there, and when we return you can pull the boat out and enjoy the party.

Hey guys,
I don't know if I'm going to make it to this rendezvous.

I asked the wife if she wanted to do the boat thing and we never got it squared away.
I'll bring it back up to her tonight and see whats going on.

Also, I'm a new Harley owner and I might just do the Flood Run this year and it's on the same day.

I'll let you know which way were leaning by tomorrow.

Dave, sorry I didn't get back to your email until now, I've been super busy at work and home.

It seems it'd be better to launch at Windmill, so that's the way we'll go...
Gep: I remember our 2-man rendezvous a couple years back, and I overlooked the fact the the Flood Run was centered in Prescott. Thanks for the heads-up. I think I'll still pay a visit and just stay off Main Street... Mention to your wife the Windmill party - that should help change her mind....
Hal, I could lead the way on the short drive to Afton, if you're unsure of the way...
skred posted 09-13-2004 02:54 PM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
Dave, looking back through the posts, it looks like we've improved from a 2-man rendezvous to a 3-man rendezvous... Well, better'n nuttin'....

We will launch at Windmill as well. reservations for two. What time are going to meet? and exactly where? We could exchange cell #'s via e-mail to allow for last minute adjustments.

I made reservations for 5 (my wife'll be out of town).

Saturday weather is looking good. I don't have a preference regarding a start time.

I will email you both my phone numbers. I am assuming everyone is arriving Friday night, we can decide after you get settled.

We have a 90 mile drive and thought we would drive up sat morn. We could be there by 9AM. 10 would be OK too, just depends on how far we want to cruise and the weather?

We have never boated rivers...any required/essential equipment we will need?

skred posted 09-15-2004 03:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
Hal, nothing special required on the rivers, except a bit more self-control as the 40-footers plow on past you. Course, this time of year, there won't be much of that...
I'm sure David know the rivers better than I do, but even I'm careful not to get silly, and go zooming off at high speed to check out some neat little bay, etc. without looking for wing dams. We used to have a group of about 10 boats that pulled up on a sand bar island on weekends to socialize, etc. We'd set up lawn chairs at the edge of the beach, and wait for some yahoo to come blasting down the channel not recognizing the wing dam indicators. Usually there was a loud bang, and then silence. We would all hold up cards with a number from 1 to 10 to grade his performance. A "7" usually meant we'd tow him to shore and contact a tow boat. A "10" usually meant "call 911".
If in doubt, follow Dave.
David Pendleton posted 09-15-2004 11:15 PM ET (US)     Profile for David Pendleton  Send Email to David Pendleton
I think getting started around noon would be fine. I'm pretty much open.

Weather is supposed to be good.

No wing-dams on the St. Croix, so no worries there. The Mississippi is generally safe if you stay in the channel. Sometimes you can spot the dams because the water looks different, but I rarely venture out of the channel. Floating debris can be a problem, but much more so in early spring/summer.

If you have a VHF, bring it.

Dave

skred posted 09-16-2004 08:07 AM ET (US)     Profile for skred  Send Email to skred
DAve,
Have VHF - will bring... I was referring to the Miss. re: wing dams. Some of those were less than 6 inches below the surface, and the turbid water hid them well. We'd look for the current swirl to locate them... Never had a run-in. Like you said: stay in the channel, and no problems whatsoever.
Looking forward to a great day on the water..

Well, whaler sailors in the WI/MN area you missed a beautiful weekend for a rendezvous on the St. Croix river. We got in 32.6 miles, most on the St. Croix from Afton, MN to Prescott, Wi...then up the Mississippi to lock and dam #2 and return to Afton. Windmill Marina at Afton, then had there annual fall appreciation dinner and bonfire. The weather cooperated with light winds out of the south and temps in the low 80's. The trees were just starting to turn. Sunday my wife and I put in at Hudson, Wi and cruise up the St Croix to the DNR turn around which is 13 miles to the north. The bluffs were spectacular against a clear blue sky. We pulled up on a sand bar and soaked our feet for more than an hour. We were back on the trailer by 2 PM then had a fantastic burger at Barker's Bar and Griil in Hudson.
Hope more of you can join us next time...Hal of Waseca

I knew you would like Barker's, Hal. It's one of my favorite spots to eat.

I'm glad you could make it and I'm especially glad you could run north of Stillwater. It's very nice up there, as you found out.

I was out late Sunday afternoon after I finished working on the trailer, the weather was great.

My daughter & I also had a great time. My daughter expecially liked the camaraderie she witnessed between Whaler owners. The Windmill Festival was great, the river scenery beautiful, and the company excellent. (By the way, my cataract surgery went off without a hitch - I'm 20/20 for the first time in my life!) I'll e-mail you fellas the meager number of photos I took..
