In the Gam under a thread on Menemshas someone suggested Menemsha would be a great place for a Rendezvous. I then expanded on the idea. I have repeated that idea here to see if there was real interest in doing it.

My idea was that it would be amazing if one could organize a cruise of 16/17 ft Models (as well as other BW's) that started in EASTPORT Connecticut, crossed the Sound to MONTAUK New York, then back across the sound (via Block Island) to NEWPORT. From Newport it is an hour and a half run to SAKONNET. From Sakonnet across Buzzards Bay to MENEMSHA, TASHMOO and KATAMA all on Martha's Vineyard. From the Vineyard to NANTUCKET, and then to NAUSET on Cape Cod. From the Cape up to MINOT and COHASSET Mass and then finish in Boston the home of the Whaler.

None of these runs are that long and it could be done in a week or so. It could be Boston Whaler’s answer to the New York Yacht Club Cruise.

The next trick would be to get Boston Whaler to sponser the trip as a great PR event. Local owners could join for a leg or two while die-hards could do the whole thing. I am sure it is one of those things that both the boating press as well as the local papers would pick up as a great human interest story.

Andrew - if it could be done in a week (say Sunday morning to Saturday night which would allow for a day's travel each end and only be a week off of work) I'd be very interested.

andiamo,

Interesting idea, however starting in one location and finishing in another presents some real obstacles. Another idea, use Newport as home base and take day or overnight excursions. This would be easier, especially for smaller boats.

Having traveled to and from MV by water, to a number of places on the list, I'd be happy to help with info on distances, GPS numbers and amenities for any of the places I know about. Home port for us is Lake Tashmoo.

I spent all my summers as a kid in Sakonnet sailing out of the Sakonnet Yacht Club and have sailed to MV a number of times for Edgartown Race Week.

That's a great idea, andiamo. What about a trip from Outrage to Dauntless, down to Conquest, over to Sentry, with a final beer and burger in the quaint little village of Sourpuss? :-)

I cannot believe that a company that has 'turned it's back' on all of it's classic designs would sponsor an event of that nature.
