Is anyone aware of any whaler rendezvous/fishing tournaments in the north east? Is anyone interested in one?

Offshore27,

Where and when in the NE?

I know of at least one in MA., which is sponsored in part by a local dealer.

I am in Nova Scotia in Canada. I am considering travelling to an event next summer but My boat is all you would want to tow for a long trip.
I would consider running on my own bottom rather than trailing to MA. Open to anything really.

Offshore,

There are a few of us whaler guys here in Atlantic Canada. I think we should start the planing for a Nova Scotia event this year. It would be nice to look at doing one. We do have some great places what do you think?

Hi Larry,

I thought I was the only CW member here in Atlantic Canada. I would love to get involved and organize an event for next summer.
Where are you located? What do you like to do most while on the water? What do you have in mind for an event?

Cheers!

Hi Scott,

I live in Sheet Harbour, on the Eastern Shore. Where do you live at Scott ? There are actually a couple of more of us from the province and a few others in NB and PEI. This province has some great coastline and some fantastic beaches and islands just off of the coast. As for an event the book is wide open. Lets see if we get some more interested and then decide as a group what we would like to do. The first thing we should do is get everyone to add to this thread that is from the Atlantic Provinces. And perhaps we could even get together at the Halifax Boat Show in February.

Larry,

I live in Halifax but keep my boat in Chester. I usually take at least two runs to Halifax through out the summer. Lets see who else we can locate and go from there.

Hi Scott,

I should have figured that out if I had of looked at your profile. The only Hummer dealer is in Halifax. My son often gets me to stop and look at the Hummers, that is his dream truck to have some day. He graduates from grade 12 this year. So some day he may need to get one, who knows. My dream was always to have a whaler. I have had 2 a 15 foot sport and now the 17 foot Newport. By chance did you get your 27 from Sealand Industries ? I have worked for Sealand for a number of years as a salesperson for the boat shows. And now I look after their web site for them. So I know them pretty well. May be helpful if we hold the event in Chester. This may get off the ground.

Larry,

Chester would be a good spot. There are many great spots to go.
I did not buy my boat from Sealand. I actually tracked it down in Florida. There are a few pics of my boat on the cetacea page 63. My boat now has a pair of 250 Yamahas.
My dad and I buy and sell several whalers a year. We currently have a 15 Super Sport, 18 Outrage, and a 22 Sentry available for sale.
I got a bit off topic, sorry.
I am looking forward to hearing from some other Atlantic Canada members.

Hi Scott,

I remember looking at that page when it went up. Awesome looking boat. Chester is a beautiful area. It would be an awesome spot to hold a rendezvous and it would highlight that us, "Northern people" know how to have a good time, with great maritime hospitality.

Lets see how many people are interested.

Not any response yet eh! Perhaps we can contact some whaler owners we know locally and see if we can get some to
committ.
You mentioned you knew some CW members around the Maritimes. Maybe you could contact them directly to see if there is any interest.

Hi all,

After my initial post I did some checking and discovered one of the BW sponsored fish tournaments was not held last year. I will find out this week if it will be held this year.

There is a month long fishing Derby held on Martha's Vineyard from Mid Sept-mid Oct. One prize is a 19' Nantucket w/engine & trailer.

I was planning on another trip up The Hudson River this year but might consider heading up to Novia Scotia instead.

Anyone interested in a really long trip in 2006? Like Nova Scotia south through Long Island Sound, up The Hudson River, Erie Canal, St. Lawrence Sea Way and back to Nova Scotia.

It would be great to see you make it to NS for a Rendezvous. The big trip in 2006 sounds awsome. I may have to take small loan for the fuel though!!!
How many boats do you think you could convince to make it to NS for an event?
The cruising grounds here are unreal. Are you farmiliar with our waters?

I just picked up this thread. Just last night I was just talking with my son and others about going back up to Nova this summer. Friends have a couple summer cottages on Crescent Beach and are tentatively planning on being there end of July / beginning of August. I know this won't do for your rendezvous but at least I have names for when we do come up (hopefully). I still have to get another Whaler. I should start looking for one soon though.

What great fishing and scenery you all have. It's a different mindset than what I'm used to as far as motoring around. You have rocks everywhere and I'm used to the Chesapeake where it's all soft on the bottom. You run out of water then just lift the engines a little and continue on. In Nova you lose parts off the lower if you aren't careful.

Acutally, I think I did communicate with Larry (Newportguy) I think when we were planning the trip there 3 or so years ago. Am I right, Larry?

Anyhow, looking forward to being back in the terrific Atlantic fishing waters. It's a far cry from the dreary ol' Pittsburgh weather we're having now and our 3 mud choked rivers.

Arch and Arch (my son).

My father was stationed there in the Coast Guard back in the 60's.....what a beautifull place. I would love to attend if I can take a vacation this summer and if wife wants to go. Always wanted to see 50' tidal drops.

Arch,

We don't even have dates yet for the proposed rendezvouz. I am very flexible on this and will set the dates to accomodate the largest group we can put together.
As for the rocks, it is not that bad. Maine is much worse in this regard. Our bay (which is Mahone Bay) is very easy to navigate with little or no common knowledge. For the most part, if you give the islands and points a reasonable berth, you will be just fine.
If you are looking for a whaler, I do have some available. I have 15 Super Sport, and 18 Outrage, a 22 Sentry, and my person boat, a 27 Offshore forsale. Let me know you thoghts Arch.

JUDGE, as for the tides, you will have to hit the Bay Of Fundy for those big boys. We are on the opposite coast of NS just outside of Halifax.

Lets get some tentative dates inplace and round up all the bodies and boats that we can.

Cheers!

27.

I still believe we will be there the end of July to the 1st week of August. Unfortunately I can't be very flexible as our 2 families go there the same time each year for the last 30 or 40 years.

As for your Outrage I'll email you directly. Had a Montauk but needed something bigger. Combination of needing a little softer ride and wanting to be able to have 3 (or 4 periodically) fishing same time. However with a bigger boat goes more $ in gas, bigger tow vehicle, etc. Still not sure what to do.

27 is definitely out of the question. That's one big sweet Outrage though. I shudder thinking about the gas.

Can your Hummers pull them (27 offshore) adequately? Too lazy to look up the H2 towing specs and where the 27 weighs in at. Just wondering.

Hi Arch,

Your are correct we did talk before but there was not much interest. This time, I am hoping we can attract more interest. Scott, what about holding to go along with the shark derby here in Halifax and then going to Chester or Mahone Bay. Or we could go east down to Liscomb Lodge. There is lots of free camping on beaches along the way. I am open. Just would enjoy a bunch getting together.

Which shark derby are you thinking of, Boondocks in Eastern Passage? Do you know the dates of the Derby you spoke of?
I think it would be great to include a tournamnet with the Rendezvous. I would love to lead a group down the South Shore and into Chester the following day.
I thought we would plan to begin or end the day or both at the Ropeloft in the front Harbour of Chester. Here is a link to the Ropeloft. I know the owners would be glad to accomodate our event!

Hi Scott,

The shark derby was held last year on July 31 from Fisherman's Cove in Eastern Passage. Not sure what time it will be this year. As well there are the Natal day fire works on August 1 or there abouts...so a couple of nice events to work around that would be spectacular. There are also hotels close to the water in Chester at one of the Inns. There is also a boat club down that way to ??? Perhaps since you know the area, you could posty some links to wet everyones appetite. Sounds like with a little planing this could be an awesome trip. Kamie if you come down let us know, one of us will show you the sites.

Being underpowered [v6 i/o] my cruise is about 20 Knots.
I'm not sure I can keep up. At the rendezous what do you guys usually cruise at? Depending on dates I'd enjoy meeting the group. If others are coming without their boats, we have room for a couple of hitchhikers.

Hi Roger,

This would be the first for the maritime area. But I don’t think we would be running wide open... That is no fun. And besides there will be lots of different whalers there. I as an example have a 17 with a 70 and cruise at around 25 mph. It is a lot more fun to enjoy the ride and the scenery. I have often said I would like to run to PEI from Pictou. I think that would be a lot of fun as well. PEI has some wonderful boating as well.

As for dates it might be nice to start planning...

I am suggesting maybe the July 30, 31, August 1st, 2nd. That way we could take in the Halifax natal day stuff with fireworks and motor down to Mahone Bay. I cannot find out information about the shark derby but will call the first chance I get to see when it will be. So how do those dates sound... and, we do not have do the natal day stuff but the fireworks are spectacular on the water. There are a couple of yacht clubs we may need to check out, to see what anchoring cost. If we decide to go that way I am sure we could come up with a van to take us to the local hotels and start early the next morning for Mahone Bay. For those with trailers we can certainly pull out, there are a lot of launches on the harbour.

You just add the following:

as an example: This will not work becasue there will be space bewteen the first and the last fo the link.

and if I put np spaces is lloks like this:

Hello Folks, I would be interested in a get together around a shark derby. It would be dependent on the weather. I fished the derby a couple of times out of Halifax and I am not a real big fan of fog.

Larry, if you are thinking about a trip to the Island, you might want to look up Provincal Parks on PEI. Brudenel has floating docks, a four star resort, camp ground, two golf courses, horse back riding, etc etc. From there you can sail in protected waters to Montague or outside the Georgetown harbour to Boughton or Pamure Islands. They have white sand beachs. You can dig bar clams and catch mackerel in the same area.

Roger, I have no problem cruising at 20 mph, it's a lot eazier on the back. I'm also in the phone book under 11 MacLaunchlan Dr.

Guys, are any of you going to the Halifax Boat show in Feburary? Maybe we could get together there too.

All the Best,

David

Hi David,

Good to here from you. I have never been in one of the Shark tournaments, but always wanted to try. How did you enjoy them? Were they organized well? And do you think it would be good to tie this event around one of them and Natal Day or would you prefer to have a total different agenda? A lot of questions but trying to get a feel for what everyone would like to do. As well would you prefer to camp or would you like to stay in indoor accomadations along the way? I will be going to the Boat Show but not sure of the time yet, it would be nice to meet up with all of us from the area.

Hi All,

This is an email that I sent out to several Whaler owners in my local area. I forwarded this to Larry and he suggested that I post it.
The interest is really ramping up for this event. I would really like to encourage some Whaler owners from the New England area to make it for this event. You really are not that far from us and I am sure you will enjoy our very scenic waters.

Hello Everyone,

My Name is Scott Carroll. Some of you may know me from RNSYS but more likely from Chester. I got all of your email addresses from the RNSYS Directory (hope you don't mind).
I am in the early stages of trying to organize a Boston Whaler Owners event. There are many owner events throughout the Great Lakes, down the Eastern Seaboard, and also on the West Coast. I thought it would be fun to have one here in Nova Scotia as well. When you begin to think of all the people you know who own a Whaler in our area, we could have a huge turn out at such an event.
I am looking at doing a one or maybe even a two day event. What I had in mind was to have a set route to some interesting scenic places, possibly have a raft up at an island and a barbeque on the beach. From here, run around the bay to some other spots and end up back somewhere for diner (perhaps the Rope Loft in Chester, I know Derek would be glad to accommodate a large group).
I think this would be a great family fun event and a good opportunity to make some new friends.
Please let me know if you and your family would be interested in this Boston Whaler owners event. Also, if you know of anyone else here in NS or away who owns a Whaler that would like to attend, please pass this email along to them.
I am looking forward to hearing from everyone on what could be a great annual summer event.

Kind Regards

Scott Carroll

Ok Guys and Gals,

I have decided on the date for the first annual Whaler Rendezvous.
The dates that will work best for our area with such a busy summer schedule, are Saturday July 23rd or Sunday July 24th in case of rain or bad weather.
Hope this works for all parties interested in attending.

Hi Scott.

I think I can make this!! Not sure what boat I'll have by then but at the very least I'll have my fishing gear with me/us. 15 year olds can be very fickle when it comes to committing to vacation times so it may just be me.

I put it in my PDA. That means it's about an 80% chance so far. Maybe 90%.

Thanks so far for the effort. Sounds like fun.

If you need help in terms of arranging accomodation, it is good to book early so please let me know what I can arrange for you.

In a word, North.

Other than that I'm not sure what you mean.

Offshore27,

Is fuel readily available in most harbors?
Do you have a Garmin Blue Chart chip for the area? If so which one and what area does it cover? Have you traveled by water from Nova Scotia into the St. Lawrence Seaway?

Hi Scott,

I know lobster season closes around June 15 on the Eastern Shore, when does it open/close on the South Shore. A lobster dinner on the beach can be a lot of fun, perhaps a mussel boil or clam boil.

AUBV,

what kind od range do you have. As far as the chester area goes, there is what i consider plenty of fuel stops. Let me know more specifically what area you were wondering about.
I have not had any experience with the garmin blue chip. I have always used NT. It covers a very broad area but not up as far as the sea way.

Larry,

I am not sure what i have for pics but i will look. Lobster season runs from late fall to early spring. I plan to give you a call tomorrow to discuss our prior emails.

Offshore27,

I'm in the process of researching this trip and very seriously considering making the trip to Nova Scotia. Weather is one factor and distance is another.

As far as range, Our 23' has a 166 gallon fuel tank and I've taken the boat on three separate, single day-285 mile trips. Each with only one fuel stop.

I asked the question about the Garmin Blue Chart Chip because they contain a wealth of information about marina's including telephone #s, etc. This makes planning a trip much easier as I can sit with my GPS and compile a list of potential places to stop with GPS numbers and Phone numbers. This list and way points, along with other contact info then goes in a spiral bound note book. I can refer to this book very quickly even if I lose my main GPS.

A copy of the note book becomes my float plan which I give to a family member. I did this prior to going to Lake Champlain and it proved to be extremely useful. As I progressed on the trip I would call and leave a message, if no one was home, " It's 8:15 AM and I just passed way point 2." It also made calling ahead to Marina's much less distracting.

Janis,

Drive North until you get to Portland Maine and then take the ferry. It's not a cheap ride but it will save you at least 1 day of driving each way and from the ferry terminal it's 3 hours (guessing here) to Chester. You would leave Portland at 7pm and arrive in NS at 8am. If you want to drive a bit farther, continue north all the way to Bar Harbour Maine and take the ferry from there.

For the past two summers I have spent part of my vacation in New Brunswick, this will be my first year in Nova Scotia.

Well I have a 25 minute run to Chester. We are in Sweep on Cove Just east of Stonehurst.

And while I have you all what do you think of Sea Land. I need a new motor for my boat. I usually deal with Front Harbour in Lunenburg but I think I want the new E-TEC and Tom only sells Merc.

I will know better after I go to the Toronto Boat Show this week with that group.

Hi Larry,

You mentioned the other day that you had two or three others that are up for the Cruise.
What do they have for boats?

Scott

Hi Scott,

One is an 18' Outrage and the other is the 21' Outrage. I have given the dates you provided and they are trying now to arrange time off at that time. It would be nice Scott to build a list of boats coming and post. As well would you know of some names in the area for lodging. It will soon be time to get them booked.

Larry

I am considering a small registration fee whcig I hope to include a shirt, maybe dinner etc.
What amount seems reasonable enough to cover expenses but not drive participants away?

Thanks,

Scott
